    La vie sociale des Ɠuvres d’art dans les espaces publics : une Ă©tude des publics au square Saint-Louis

    Quels types de rapports les usagers des espaces publics ont-ils avec les Ɠuvres d’art qui y sont installĂ©es? Cet article porte sur les publics des Ɠuvres d’art dans les espaces publics. Il s’appuie sur la dĂ©finition que fait la sociologie urbaine des espaces publics pour comprendre les contributions de ces Ɠuvres Ă  la vie sociale et Ă  la culture urbaines. Dans le cadre d’une recherche exploratoire, le cas du square Saint-Louis de MontrĂ©al a permis de mettre cette proposition Ă  l’épreuve. L’observation filmĂ©e a Ă©tĂ© utilisĂ©e pour documenter et analyser diffĂ©rents registres d’interaction qu’entretiennent les publics avec deux Ɠuvres d’art commĂ©moratives qui s’y trouvent.What types of relationships do users of public spaces have with the artworks that are installed in those spaces? In this article, I discuss publics for artworks in public spaces. Basing my discussion on the urban sociology definition of public spaces, I examine these artworks’ contributions to urban social life and culture. As part of my exploratory research, the case of Saint-Louis Square in MontrĂ©al enabled me to put my proposition to the test.     Qu'implique l'insertion d'une oeuvre dans l'espace urbain? Par ailleurs, pourquoi qualifie-t-on ce type d'oeuvre d' art public ? S'appuyant sur les récentes recherches sur cette problématique, ce mémoire décrit l'écart critique et actif, marqué par l'espace et le temps du tumulte du centre-ville métropolitain, qui conditionne l'insertion et la réception des oeuvres du programme d'art public de la Vancouver Art Gallery. Durant la période de temps où furent créées quatre oeuvres (de Lawrence Weiner, Kim Adams, Ken Lum et Janet Cardiff), Vancouver subit une métamorphose saisissante: trois ans avant la tenue de l'Exposition universelle de 1986, l'institution muséale a déménagé dans le nouveau centre-ville qui se dessine rapidement, complétant l'important complexe de Robson Square autour duquel de nombreux projets immobiliers seront construits. Si l'on s'efforce de donner une nouvelle image à Vancouver depuis plus de deux décennies, par d'importantes et innombrables entreprises architecturales, ces oeuvres traduisent une recherche identitaire parallèle, directement sur le terrain de la vie quotidienne où les citoyens évoluent. Incarnant une tension entre cet environnement physique qui nous est imposé---fruit d'une recherche d'un monde amélioré---et les dynamiques sociales qui en sont en partie tributaires, ces oeuvres d'art public s'imposent comme un questionnement, une façon de voir et de s'approprier la ville autrement. En s'appuyant sur l'expérience de la localité, les oeuvres de Weiner, Adams, Lum et Cardiff démontrent que l'on peut intervenir, subjectivement et singulièrement, dans l'ensemble de ces processus évolutifs, afin que cette ville en mouvance ne nous échappe pas

    L’intĂ©gration de l’art public dans les entrĂ©es de ville, ces espaces publics de reprĂ©sentation, participe d’une mise en image de la ville et de son imaginaire qui est destinĂ©e Ă  rayonner auprĂšs d’un vaste public. Cette Ă©tude de cas revient sur la crĂ©ation de la premiĂšre entrĂ©e de ville de MontrĂ©al, dans l’arrondissement de MontrĂ©al-Nord, considĂ©rĂ© comme l’un des plus dĂ©favorisĂ©s de la mĂ©tropole, oĂč a Ă©tĂ© installĂ©e en 2015 l’Ɠuvre monumentale La vĂ©locitĂ© des lieux du collectif d’artistes en arts visuels BGL. CommandĂ©e aux termes d’un concours pancanadien, cette Ɠuvre a bĂ©nĂ©ficiĂ© d’un budget de rĂ©alisation de 1,1 million de dollars, une somme qui marque l’esprit, comme le suggĂšre l’effervescence mĂ©diatique provoquĂ©e par l’Ɠuvre, survenue au moment de son installation. AprĂšs une brĂšve analyse du discours sur l’art public vĂ©hiculĂ© dans les politiques culturelles municipales, l’enquĂȘte porte sur les publics de cette Ɠuvre. La conception des destinataires de l’Ɠuvre qui se forme chez les acteurs publics et les artistes est ainsi mise en relation avec celle qui se dĂ©gage de la rĂ©ception de l’Ɠuvre dans la sphĂšre mĂ©diatique. L’hypothĂšse est qu’il y aurait un conflit d’échelle entre les publics envisagĂ©s pour cette Ɠuvre et certains publics issus du quartier.The integration of public art into city gateways, as public spaces of representation, contributes to the construction of the city’s image and its imaginary, which is intended to reach out to a vast public. This case study looks back at the first city gateway created in MontrĂ©al, in the MontrĂ©al-Nord borough – considered one of the most disadvantaged in the city – where the monumental work La vĂ©locitĂ© des lieux, by the visual-arts collective BGL, was installed in 2015. Commissioned following a Canada-wide competition, the work had a production budget of $1.1 million – an amount that gave it high visibility, as suggested by the media attention it received when it was installed. After a short analysis of the discourse on public art conveyed in municipal cultural policies, the study examines the publics for this work. The conception of the audiences for the work formed by public bodies and the artists is compared to that formed by reception of the work in the media. The hypothesis is that there is a conflict of scale between the publics envisaged for the work and certain publics from the neighbourhood.La integraciĂłn del arte pĂșblico en los puntos de entrada de una ciudad - estos espacios pĂșblicos de representaciĂłn - forma parte de una puesta en escena de la misma y de su imaginario destinada a tocar una vasta audiencia. El presente caso de anĂĄlisis se refiere a la creaciĂłn de la primera entrada de Montreal, en el distrito de Montreal Norte, considerado uno de los mĂĄs desfavorecidos de la ciudad. En este lugar se instalĂł, en 2015, La vĂ©locitĂ© des lieux (La velocidad de los sitios) del colectivo de artistas BGL. Obra monumental galardonada en un concurso pan-canadiense, la misma recibiĂł un presupuesto de producciĂłn de 1,1 millones de dĂłlares. Este monto refleja con precisiĂłn la dimensiĂłn del frenesĂ­ mediĂĄtico que se produjo en el momento de su instalaciĂłn. Un breve anĂĄlisis del discurso sobre el arte pĂșblico que transmiten las polĂ­ticas culturales municipales serĂĄ seguido de una exploraciĂłn que se centra sobre los pĂșblicos de esta obra en particular. Ponemos asĂ­ en relaciĂłn la concepciĂłn de los destinatarios de la misma que tenĂ­an los actores pĂșblicos implicados en este proyecto y tambiĂ©n los artistas, y la concepciĂłn que surge luego de la recepciĂłn de la obra en la esfera mediĂĄtica. Les produits du Nouveau Pariou sont recouverts par ceux d'un volcan trachytique, probablement le Kilian. Sous les produits explosifs initiaux du Nouveau Pariou (faciĂšs "Traversin"), les trachytes Ă  amphibole qui avaient Ă©tĂ© attribuĂ©s au Kilian, sont vraisemblablement une forme mĂ©connue des trachytes de la phase acide du Pariou lui-mĂȘme.     The mysterious morphology of MRC0943-242 as revealed by ALMA and MUSE

    © 2016 ESO. We present a pilot study of the z = 2.923 radio galaxy MRC0943-242, where we combine information from ALMA and MUSE data cubes for the first time. Even with modest integration times, we disentangle the AGN and starburst dominated components. These data reveal a highly complex morphology as the AGN, starburst, and molecular gas components show up as widely separated sources in dust continuum, optical continuum, and CO line emission observations. CO(1-0) and CO(8-7) line emission suggest that there is a molecular gas reservoir offset from both the dust and the optical continuum that is located ~90 kpc from the AGN. The UV line emission has a complex structure in emission and absorption. The line emission is mostly due to a large scale ionisation cone energised by the AGN, and a Lya emitting bridge of gas between the radio galaxy and a heavily star-forming set of components. Strangely, the ionisation cone has no Lya emission. We find this is due to an optically thick layer of neutral gas with unity covering fraction spread out over a region of at least ~100 kpc from the AGN. Other less thick absorption components are associated with Lya emitting gas within a few tens of kpc from the radio galaxy and are connected by a bridge of emission. We speculate that this linear structure of dust, Lya and CO emission, and the redshifted absorption seen in the circum nuclear region may represent an accretion flow feeding gas into this massive AGN host galaxy

    Inclusive photon production at forward rapidities in proton-proton collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV

    See paper for full list of authors – 24 pages, 10 captioned figures, 4 tables, authors from page 19, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/1024International audienceThe multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of inclusive photons have been measured at forward rapidities (2.3<η<3.92.3 < \eta < 3.9) in proton-proton collisions at three center-of-mass energies, s=0.9\sqrt{s}=0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV using the ALICE detector. It is observed that the increase in the average photon multiplicity as a function of beam energy is compatible with both a logarithmic and a power-law dependence. The relative increase in average photon multiplicity produced in inelastic pp collisions at 2.76 and 7 TeV center-of-mass energies with respect to 0.9 TeV are 37.2% ±\pm 0.3% (stat) ±\pm 8.8% (sys) and 61.2% ±\pm 0.3% (stat) ±\pm 7.6% (sys), respectively. The photon multiplicity distributions for all center-of-mass energies are well described by negative binomial distributions. The multiplicity distributions are also presented in terms of KNO variables. The results are compared to model predictions, which are found in general to underestimate the data at large photon multiplicities, in particular at the highest center-of-mass energy. Limiting fragmentation behavior of photons has been explored with the data, but is not observed in the measured pseudorapidity range

    Database of pleistocene periglacial featuresin France: description of the online version

    A database of Pleistocene periglacial features in France has been compiled from a review of academic literature and reports of rescue archaeology, the analysis of aerial photographs and new field surveys. Polygons, soil stripes, ice-wedge pseudomorphs, sand wedges and composite wedge pseudomorphs are included in the database together with their geographic coordinates, geological context, description and associated references. It is hoped that this database, which aim is to be integrated in broader studies, will stimulate further work on past permafrost reconstruction and will favour greater understanding of the climatic events that lead to the formation of the periglacial features. The database is available online on the AFEQ-CNF INQUA website (https://afeqeng.hypotheses.org/487). A folder that contains photographs and sketches of the features is also available on request.Une base de donnĂ©es des structures pĂ©riglaciaires plĂ©istocĂšnes de France a Ă©tĂ© crĂ©Ă©e Ă  partir d’une revue de la littĂ©rature scientifique, de rapports d’archĂ©ologie prĂ©ventive, de l’analyse de photographies aĂ©riennes et de nouvelles prospections de terrain.     Epididymis Response Partly Compensates for Spermatozoa Oxidative Defects in snGPx4 and GPx5 Double Mutant Mice

    We report here that spermatozoa of mice lacking both the sperm nucleaus glutathione peroxidase 4 (snGPx4) and the epididymal glutathione peroxidase 5 (GPx5) activities display sperm nucleus structural abnormalities including delayed and defective nuclear compaction, nuclear instability and DNA damage. We show that to counteract the GPx activity losses, the epididymis of the double KO animals mounted an antioxydant response resulting in a strong increase in the global H2O2-scavenger activity especially in the cauda epididymis. Quantitative RT-PCR data show that together with the up-regulation of epididymal scavengers (of the thioredoxin/peroxiredoxin system as well as glutathione-S-transferases) the epididymis of double mutant animals increased the expression of several disulfide isomerases in an attempt to recover normal disulfide-bridging activity. Despite these compensatory mechanisms cauda-stored spermatozoa of double mutant animals show high levels of DNA oxidation, increased fragmentation and greater susceptibility to nuclear decondensation. Nevertheless, the enzymatic epididymal salvage response is sufficient to maintain full fertility of double KO males whatever their age, crossed with young WT female mice
