    The relationship between the development of general offending and intimate partner violence perpetration in young adulthood

    This study examined how patterns in general offending relate to the occurrence of and likelihood of persistence in intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration in young adulthood. The study used longitudinal data from the cohort of 18 year olds from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods study. Self-reported offending was measured in all three waves, and data on IPV were collected in Waves 1 and 3. Group-based trajectory modeling identified three distinct general offending trajectory groups: non-offenders, low-rate offenders, and high-rate offenders. The majority of respondents engaged in psychological IPV perpetration, and half of all young adults reported physical IPV, but prevalence rates decreased over the waves. Binary logistic regression analyses showed that those involved in offending, especially those who showed a diverse offending pattern, were at increased risk of perpetrating psychological and (severe) physical IPV, as well as to show persistence in the different forms of IPV perpetration. The findings highlight an important overlap between general crime and IPV perpetration. In recognition that IPV is often part of a broader pattern of antisocial behavior, interventions should focus on interrupting the criminal careers of all young offenders to reduce the prevalence and harms of IPV

    Does alcohol cue inhibitory control training survive a context shift?

    Inhibitory control training (ICT) is a novel psychological intervention that aims to improve inhibitory control in response to alcohol-related cues through associative learning. Laboratory studies have demonstrated reductions in alcohol consumption following ICT compared with control/sham training, but it is unclear if these effects are robust to a change of context. In a preregistered study, we examined whether the effects of ICT would survive a context shift from a neutral context to a seminaturalistic bar setting. In a mixed design, 60 heavy drinkers (40 female) were randomly allocated to receive either ICT or control/sham training in a neutral laboratory over 2 sessions. We developed a novel variation of ICT that used multiple stop signals to establish direct stimulus–stop associations. The effects of ICT/control were measured once in the same context and once following a shift to a novel (alcohol-related) context. Our dependent variables were ad libitum alcohol consumption following training, change in inhibitory control processes, and change in alcohol value. ICT did not reduce alcohol consumption in either context compared with the control group. Furthermore, we demonstrated no effects of ICT on inhibitory control processes or alcohol value. Bayesian analyses demonstrated overall support for the null hypotheses. This study failed to find any effects of ICT on alcohol consumption or candidate psychological mechanisms. These findings illustrate the difficulty in training alcohol-inhibition associations and add to a growing body of literature suggesting that ICT holds little evidential value as a psychological intervention for alcohol use disorders

    Aharonov-Bohm interference in the presence of metallic mesoscopic cylinders

    This work studies the interference of electrons in the presence of a line of magnetic flux surrounded by a normal-conducting mesoscopic cylinder at low temperature. It is found that, while there is a supplementary phase contribution from each electron of the mesoscopic cylinder, the sum of these individual supplementary phases is equal to zero, so that the presence of a normal-conducting mesoscopic ring at low temperature does not change the Aharonov-Bohm interference pattern of the incident electron. It is shown that it is not possible to ascertain by experimental observation that the shielding electrons have responded to the field of an incident electron, and at the same time to preserve the interference pattern of the incident electron. It is also shown that the measuring of the transient magnetic field in the region between the two paths of an electron interference experiment with an accuracy at least equal to the magnetic field of the incident electron generates a phase uncertainty which destroys the interference pattern.Comment: 15 pages, 5 Postscript figure

    Bio-ORACLE: a global environmental dataset for marine species distribution modeling

    The oceans harbor a great diversity of organisms whose distribution and ecological preferences are often poorly understood. Species distribution modeling (SDM) could improve our knowledge and inform marine ecosystem management and conservation. Although marine environmental data are available from various sources, there are currently no user-friendly, high-resolution global datasets designed for SDM applications. This study aims to ?ll this gap by assembling a comprehensive, uniform, high-resolution and readily usable package of global environmental rasters. We compiled global coverage data, e.g. satellite-based and in situ measured data, representing various aspects of the marine environment relevant for species distributions. Rasters were assembled at a resolution of 5 arcmin (c. 9.2 km) and a uniform landmask was applied. The utility of the dataset was evaluated by maximum entropy SDM of the invasive seaweed Codium fragile ssp. fragile. We present Bio-ORACLE (ocean rasters for analysis of climate and environment), a global dataset consisting of 23 geophysical, biotic and climate rasters. This user-friendly data package for marine species distribution modeling is available for download at http://www.bio-oracle.ugent.be. The high predictive power of the distribution model of C. fragile ssp. fragile clearly illustrates the potential of the data package for SDM of shallow-water marine organisms. The availability of this global environmental data package has the potential to stimulate marine SDM. The high predictive success of the presence-only model of a notorious invasive seaweed shows that the information contained in Bio-ORACLE can be informative about marine distributions and permits building highly accurate species distribution models

    ECOdrug: A database connecting drugs and conservation of their targets across species

    This is the author accepted manuscriptPharmaceuticals are designed to interact with specific molecular targets in humans and these targets generally have orthologs in other species. This provides opportunities for the drug discovery community to use alternative model species for drug development. It also means, however, there is potential for mode of action related effects in non-target wildlife species as many pharmaceuticals reach the environment through patient use and manufacturing wastes. Acquiring insight in drug target ortholog predictions across species and taxonomic groups has proven difficult because of the lack of an optimal strategy and because necessary information is spread across multiple and diverse sources and platforms. We introduce a new research platform tool, ECOdrug, that reliably connects drugs to their protein targets across divergent species. It harmonizes ortholog predictions from multiple sources via a simple user interface underpinning critical applications for a wide range of studies in pharmacology, ecotoxicology and comparative evolutionary biology. ECOdrug can be used to identify species with drug targets and identify drugs that interact with those targets. As such, it can be applied to support intelligent targeted drug safety testing by ensuring appropriate and relevant species are selected in ecological risk assessments.     The aim of this editorial is to provide an adaptation of nutrition support recommendations for the overall population of critically ill children, to provide further refined recommendations for critically ill children presenting with COVID-19 or paediatric hyper-inflammatory syndrome temporally associated with COVID-19. They are based on the ESPNIC-MEN section recommendations published in January 2020 (6) and Surviving Sepsis Campaign recommendations from February 2020 (7). These recommendations cover the acute, stable and rehabilitation phases (Table 1, Table 2)

    The aims of this study were to analyze: (1) goat farm contribution to the farmer\u27s income, (2) minimum farm scale for providing benefit, and (3) financial feasibility of the goat farm. This study was conducted in the Batungsel Village, Pupuan District, Tabanan Regency. Interview used questioner to farmers is done to collect data. Income analysis, BEP (Break Event Point), Profit Rate, and R/C ratio, was used in this study. The results of this study showed that: net income of the farmer from goat farm was Rp. 6,375,000. Profit rate 66.93% and R/C ratio of 1.67 showed that the goat farm was feasible financially. Break Event Point can be attain on Rp. 6,284,393 of the revenue or 8 goat of production. Income from goat farm give the largest contribution to total farmer income. This study indicated that the goat farm can be used as a solution to reducing poverty rate in the villages

    Improving transferability of introduced species' distribution models: new tools to forecast the spread of a highly invasive seaweed

    Extent: 13 p.The utility of species distribution models for applications in invasion and global change biology is critically dependent on their transferability between regions or points in time, respectively. We introduce two methods that aim to improve the transferability of presence-only models: density-based occurrence thinning and performance-based predictor selection. We evaluate the effect of these methods along with the impact of the choice of model complexity and geographic background on the transferability of a species distribution model between geographic regions. Our multifactorial experiment focuses on the notorious invasive seaweed Caulerpa cylindracea (previously Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea) and uses Maxent, a commonly used presence-only modeling technique. We show that model transferability is markedly improved by appropriate predictor selection, with occurrence thinning, model complexity and background choice having relatively minor effects. The data shows that, if available, occurrence records from the native and invaded regions should be combined as this leads to models with high predictive power while reducing the sensitivity to choices made in the modeling process. The inferred distribution model of Caulerpa cylindracea shows the potential for this species to further spread along the coasts of Western Europe, western Africa and the south coast of Australia.Heroen Verbruggen, Lennert Tyberghein, Gareth S.
