Anisotropic exchange and spin-wave damping in pure and electron-doped SrIrO
The collective magnetic excitations in the spin-orbit Mott insulator
(SrLa)IrO () were investigated by
means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. We report significant magnon
energy gaps at both the crystallographic and antiferromagnetic zone centers at
all doping levels, along with a remarkably pronounced momentum-dependent
lifetime broadening. The spin-wave gap is accounted for by a significant
anisotropy in the interactions between isospins, thus
marking the departure of SrIrO from the essentially isotropic
Heisenberg model appropriate for the superconducting cuprates.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Evolution of the magnetic excitations in NaOsO through its metal-insulator transition
The temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum in NaOsO
through its metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) at 410 K has been investigated
using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Os L edge.
High resolution ( 56 meV) measurements show that the
well-defined, low energy magnons in the insulating state weaken and dampen upon
approaching the metallic state. Concomitantly, a broad continuum of excitations
develops which is well described by the magnetic fluctuations of a nearly
antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid. By revealing the continuous evolution of the
magnetic quasiparticle spectrum as it changes its character from itinerant to
localized, our results provide unprecedented insight into the nature of the MIT

Secondary LS category of measured laminations
In the author's Ph.D., a version of the tangential LS category for foliated
spaces depending on a transverse invariant measure, called the measured
category, was introduced. Unfortunately, the measured category vanishes easily.
When it is zero, the rate of convergence to zero of the quantity involved in
the definition, by taking arbitrarily large homotopies, gives a new invariant,
called the secondary measured category. Several versions of classical results
are proved for the secondary measured category. It is also shown that the
secondary measured category is a transverse invariant related to the growth of
(pseudo)groups. The equality between secondary category and the growth of a

Magnetically induced metal-insulator transition in Pb2CaOsO6
We report on the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of two new
double-perovskites synthesized under high pressure; Pb2CaOsO6 and Pb2ZnOsO6.
Upon cooling below 80 K, Pb2CaOsO6 simultaneously undergoes a metal--insulator
transition and develops antiferromagnetic order. Pb2ZnOsO6, on the other hand,
remains a paramagnetic metal down to 2 K. The key difference between the two
compounds lies in their crystal structure. The Os atoms in Pb2ZnOsO6 are
arranged on an approximately face-centred cubic lattice with strong
antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange couplings. The geometrical
frustration inherent to this lattice prevents magnetic order from forming down
to the lowest temperatures. In contrast, the unit cell of Pb2CaOsO6 is heavily
distorted up to at least 500 K, including antiferroelectric-like displacements
of the Pb and O atoms despite metallic conductivity above 80 K. This distortion
relieves the magnetic frustration, facilitating magnetic order which in turn
drives the metal--insulator transition. Our results suggest that the phase
transition in Pb2CaOsO6 is spin-driven, and could be a rare example of a Slater

Exploiting Anopheles responses to thermal, odour and visual stimuli to improve surveillance and control of malaria
Mosquito surveillance and control are at the heart of efforts to eliminate malaria, however, there remain significant gaps in our understanding of mosquito behaviour that impede innovation. We hypothesised that a combination of human-associated stimuli could be used to attract and kill malaria vectors more successfully than individual stimuli, and at least as well as a real human. To test this in the field, we quantified Anopheles responses to olfactory, visual and thermal stimuli in Burkina Faso using a simple adhesive trap. Traps baited with human odour plus high contrast visual stimuli caught more Anopheles than traps with odour alone, showing that despite their nocturnal habit, malaria vectors make use of visual cues in host-seeking. The best performing traps, however, combined odour and visual stimuli with a thermal signature in the range equivalent to human body temperature. When tested against a human landing catch during peak mosquito abundance, this “host decoy” trap caught nearly ten times the number of Anopheles mosquitoes caught by a human collector. Exploiting the behavioural responses of mosquitoes to the entire suite of host stimuli promises to revolutionise vector surveillance and provide new paradigms in disease control
SPIRE - combining SGI-110 with cisplatin and gemcitabine chemotherapy for solid malignancies including bladder cancer: study protocol for a phase Ib/randomised IIa open label clinical trial
Background
Urothelial bladder cancer (UBC) accounts for 10,000 new diagnoses and 5000 deaths annually in the UK (Cancer Research UK, http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/health-professional/cancer-statistics/statistics-by-cancer-type/bladder-cancer, Cancer Research UK, Accessed 26 Mar 2018). Cisplatin-based chemotherapy is standard of care therapy for UBC for both palliative first-line treatment of advanced/metastatic disease and radical neoadjuvant treatment of localised muscle invasive bladder cancer. However, cisplatin resistance remains a critical cause of treatment failure and a barrier to therapeutic advance in UBC. Based on supportive pre-clinical data, we hypothesised that DNA methyltransferase inhibition would circumvent cisplatin resistance in UBC and potentially other cancers.
Methods
The addition of SGI-110 (guadecitabine, a DNA methyltransferase inhibitor) to conventional doublet therapy of gemcitabine and cisplatin (GC) is being tested within the phase Ib/IIa SPIRE clinical trial. SPIRE incorporates an initial, modified rolling six-dose escalation phase Ib design of up to 36 patients with advanced solid tumours followed by a 20-patient open-label randomised controlled dose expansion phase IIa component as neoadjuvant treatment for UBC. Patients are being recruited from UK secondary care sites. The dose escalation phase will determine a recommended phase II dose (RP2D, primary endpoint) of SGI-110, by subcutaneous injection, on days 1–5 for combination with GC at conventional doses (cisplatin 70 mg/m2, IV infusion, day 8; gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2, IV infusion, days 8 and 15) in every 21-day cycle. In the dose expansion phase, patients will be randomised 1:1 to GC with or without SGI-110 at the proposed RP2D. Secondary endpoints will include toxicity profiles, SGI-110 pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic biomarkers, and pathological complete response rates in the dose expansion phase. Analyses will not be powered for formal statistical comparisons and descriptive statistics will be used to describe rates of toxicity, efficacy and translational endpoints by treatment arm.
Discussion
SPIRE will provide evidence for whether SGI-110 in combination with GC chemotherapy is safe and biologically effective prior to future phase II/III trials as a neoadjuvant therapy for UBC and potentially in other cancers treated with GC
Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charm quark in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 4.6 fb−1 of pp collision data at s√ = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. In events in which a W boson decays to an electron or muon, the charm quark is tagged either by its semileptonic decay to a muon or by the presence of a charmed meson. The integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay are measured. Results are compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations obtained from various parton distribution function parameterisations. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea-quark distributions is determined to be 0.96+0.26−0.30 at Q 2 = 1.9 GeV2, which supports the hypothesis of an SU(3)-symmetric composition of the light-quark sea. Additionally, the cross-section ratio σ(W + +c¯¯)/σ(W − + c) is compared to the predictions obtained using parton distribution function parameterisations with different assumptions about the s−s¯¯¯ quark asymmetry
