THz parametric gain in semiconductor superlattices in the absence of electric domains

We theoretically show that conditions for THz gain and conditions for formation of destructive electric domains in semiconductor superlattices are fairly different in the case of parametric generation and amplification. Action of an unbiased high-frequency electric field on a superlattice causes a periodic variation of energy and effective mass of miniband electrons. This parametric effect can result in a significant gain at some even harmonic of the pump frequency without formation of electric domains and corruption from pump harmonics.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Terahertz Bloch oscillator with suppressed electric domains: Effect of elastic scattering

We theoretically consider the amplification of THz radiation in a superlattice Bloch oscillator. The main dilemma in the realization of THz Bloch oscillator is finding operational conditions which allow simultaneously to achieve gain at THz frequencies and to avoid destructive space-charge instabilities. A possible solution to this dilemma is the extended Limited Space-Charge Accumulation scheme of Kroemer (H. Kroemer, cond-mat/0009311). Within the semiclassical miniband transport approach we extend its range of applicability by considering a difference in the relaxation times for electron velocity and electron energy. The kinetics of electrons and fields establishing a stationary signal in the oscillator is also discussed.Comment: Submitted to proceedings of the summer school-conference of AQDJJ programme of ESF, Kiten, Bulgaria, 9-24 June 200

Effect of energy deposition modelling in coupled steady state Monte Carlo neutronics/thermal hydraulics calculations

In coupled calculations with Monte Carlo neutronics and thermal hydraulics the Monte Carlo code is used to produce a power distribution which in practice means tallying the energy deposition. Usually the energy deposition is estimated by making a simple approximation that energy is deposited only in fission reactions. The goal of this work is to study how the accuracy of energy deposition modelling affects the results of steady state coupled calculations. For this task an internal coupling between Monte Carlo transport code Serpent 2 and subchannel code SUBCHANFLOW is used along with a recently implemented energy deposition treatment of Serpent 2. The new treatment offers four energy deposition modes each of which offers a different combination of accuracy and required computational time. As a test case, a 3D PWR fuel assembly is modelled with different energy deposition modes. The resulting effective multiplication factors are within 30 pcm. Differences of up to 100K are observed in the fuel temperatures

Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. Background: Severity-associated factors in atopic dermatitis (AD) have focussed on early onset, concomitant atopic diseases, markers of Th2-shifted inflammation and filaggrin mutations. Objectives: To investigate factors associated with severe AD in Finnish patients. Methods: We conducted a single-centre, cross-sectional observational study with 502 AD patients aged 4.79 to 79.90 years (mean 32.08 years). Disease severity was assessed with the Rajka–Langeland severity score and EASI and associated clinical signs were evaluated. Data regarding onset, relatives, atopic and other comorbidities was gathered retrospectively. We investigated total serum IgE-levels, a panel of filaggrin null mutations and functional variants of genes associated with skin barrier defects. Results: Factors more frequent in severe AD included early onset (P = 0.004, 95%CI 0.000–0.024), male sex (P = 0.002, 95%CI 0.000–0.11), history of smoking (P = 0.012, 95%CI 0.000–0.024), concomitant asthma (P = 0.001, 95%CI 0.000–0.011), palmar hyperlinearity (P = 0.013, 95%CI 0.014–0.059), hand dermatitis (P = 0.020, 95%CI 0.000–0.029) and history of contact allergy (P = 0.042, 95%CI 0.037–0.096). Body mass indices (P < 0.000, 95%CI 0.000–0.011) and total serum IgE-levels (P < 0.000, 95%CI 0.000–0.011) were higher in severe AD. No differences were observed for allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, food allergy, peanut allergy, prick positivity, keratosis pilaris, history of herpes simplex infections, filaggrin null mutations and other gene variants. Conclusions: Severity determinants in Finnish patients seem to be early-onset, male sex, smoking, overweight, concomitant asthma, palmar hyperlinearity, hand dermatitis and high IgE-levels. A sub-typing of patients in relation to confirmed severity determinants may be useful for course prediction, prognosis and targeted AD management.Peer reviewe

Pathogenesis of Age-Related Osteoporosis: Impaired Mechano-Responsiveness of Bone Is Not the Culprit

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: According to prevailing understanding, skeletal mechano-responsiveness declines with age and this apparent failure of the mechano-sensory feedback system has been attributed to the gradual bone loss with aging (age-related osteoporosis). The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the capacity of senescent skeleton to respond to increased loading is indeed reduced as compared to young mature skeleton. METHODS AND FINDINGS: 108 male and 101 female rats were randomly assigned into Exercise and Control groups. Exercise groups were subjected to treadmill training either at peak bone mass between 47-61 weeks of age (Mature) or at senescence between 75-102 weeks of age (Senescent). After the training intervention, femoral necks and diaphysis were evaluated with peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) and mechanical testing; the proximal tibia was assessed with microcomputed tomography (microCT). The microCT analysis revealed that the senescent bone tissue was structurally deteriorated compared to the mature bone tissue, confirming the existence of age-related osteoporosis. As regards the mechano-responsiveness, the used loading resulted in only marginal increases in the bones of the mature animals, while significant exercise-induced increases were observed virtually in all bone traits among the senescent rats. CONCLUSION: The bones of senescent rats displayed a clear ability to respond to an exercise regimen that failed to initiate an adaptive response in mature animals. Thus, our observations suggest that the pathogenesis of age-related osteoporosis is not attributable to impaired mechano-responsiveness of aging skeleton. It also seems that strengthening of even senescent bones is possible--naturally provided that safe and efficient training methods can be developed for the oldest old

Generation of the magnetic field in jets

We consider dynamo action under the combined influence of turbulence and large-scale shear in sheared jets. Shear can stretch turbulent magnetic field lines in such a way that even turbulent motions showing mirror symmetry become suitable for generation of a large-scale magnetic field. We derive the integral induction equation governing the behaviour of the mean field in jets. The main result is that sheared jets may generate a large-scale magnetic field if shear is sufficiently strong. The generated mean field is mainly concentrated in a magnetic sheath surrounding the central region of a jet, and it exhibits sign reversals in the direction of the jet axis. Typically, the magnetic field in a sheath is dominated by the component along the jet that can reach equipartition with the kinetic energy of particles, The field in the central region of jets has a more disordered structure.Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication in A&

Relativistic parsec-scale jets: II. Synchrotron emission

We calculate the optically thin synchrotron emission of fast electrons and positrons in a spiral stationary magnetic field and a radial electric field of a rotating relativistic strongly magnetized force-free jet consisting of electron-positron pair plasma. The magnetic field has a helical structure with a uniform axial component and a toroidal component that is maximal inside the jet and decreasing to zero towards the boundary of the jet. Doppler boosting and swing of the polarization angle of synchrotron emission due to the relativistic motion of the emitting volume are calculated. The distribution of the plasma velocity in the jet is consistent with the electromagnetic field structure. Two spatial distributions of fast particles are considered: uniform, and concentrated in the vicinity of the Alfven resonance surface. The latter distribution corresponds to the regular acceleration by an electromagnetic wave in the vicinity of its Alfven resonance surface inside the jet. The polarization properties of the radiation have been obtained and compared with the existing VLBI polarization measurements of parsec-scale jets in BL Lac sources and quasars. Our results give a natural explanation of the observed bimodality in the alignment between the electric field vector of the polarized radiation and the projection of the jet axis on the plane of the sky. We interpret the motion of bright knots as a phase velocity of standing spiral eigenmodes of electromagnetic perturbations in a cylindrical jet. The degree of polarization and the velocity of the observed proper motion of bright knots depend upon the angular rotational velocity of the jet. The observed polarizations and velocities of knots indicate that the magnetic field lines are bent in the direction opposite to the direction of the jet rotation.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, Astron.
