Spontaneous hot-electron light emission from electron-fed optical antennas
Nanoscale electronics and photonics are among the most promising research
areas providing functional nano-components for data transfer and signal
processing. By adopting metal-based optical antennas as a disruptive
technological vehicle, we demonstrate that these two device-generating
technologies can be interfaced to create an electronically-driven self-emitting
unit. This nanoscale plasmonic transmitter operates by injecting electrons in a
contacted tunneling antenna feedgap. Under certain operating conditions, we
show that the antenna enters a highly nonlinear regime in which the energy of
the emitted photons exceeds the quantum limit imposed by the applied bias. We
propose a model based upon the spontaneous emission of hot electrons that
correctly reproduces the experimental findings. The electron-fed optical
antennas described here are critical devices for interfacing electrons and
photons, enabling thus the development of optical transceivers for on-chip
wireless broadcasting of information at the nanoscale
Stringy K-theory and the Chern character
For a finite group G acting on a smooth projective variety X, we construct
two new G-equivariant rings: first the stringy K-theory of X, and second the
stringy cohomology of X. For a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack Y we also construct
a new ring called the full orbifold K-theory of Y. For a global quotient
Y=[X/G], the ring of G-invariants of the stringy K-theory of X is a subalgebra
of the full orbifold K-theory of the the stack Y and is linearly isomorphic to
the ``orbifold K-theory'' of Adem-Ruan (and hence Atiyah-Segal), but carries a
different, ``quantum,'' product, which respects the natural group grading. We
prove there is a ring isomorphism, the stringy Chern character, from stringy
K-theory to stringy cohomology, and a ring homomorphism from full orbifold
K-theory to Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology. These Chern characters satisfy
Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch for etale maps.
We prove that stringy cohomology is isomorphic to Fantechi and Goettsche's
construction. Since our constructions do not use complex curves, stable maps,
admissible covers, or moduli spaces, our results simplify the definitions of
Fantechi-Goettsche's ring, of Chen-Ruan's orbifold cohomology, and of
Abramovich-Graber-Vistoli's orbifold Chow.
We conclude by showing that a K-theoretic version of Ruan's Hyper-Kaehler
Resolution Conjecture holds for symmetric products.
Our results hold both in the algebro-geometric category and in the

Contribution and pathways of diazotroph-derived nitrogen to zooplankton during the VAHINE mesocosm experiment in the oligotrophic New Caledonia lagoon
In oligotrophic tropical and subtropical oceans, where strong stratification can limit the replenishment of surface nitrate, dinitrogen (N-2) fixation by diazotrophs can represent a significant source of nitrogen (N) for primary production. The VAHINE (VAriability of vertical and tropHIc transfer of fixed N-2 in the south-wEst Pacific) experiment was designed to examine the fate of diazotroph-derived nitrogen (DDN) in such ecosystems. In austral summer 2013, three large ( similar to aEuro parts per thousand aEuro-50aEuro-m(3)) in situ mesocosms were deployed for 23 days in the New Caledonia lagoon, an ecosystem that typifies the low-nutrient, low-chlorophyll environment, to stimulate diazotroph production. The zooplankton component of the study aimed to measure the incorporation of DDN into zooplankton biomass, and assess the role of direct diazotroph grazing by zooplankton as a DDN uptake pathway. Inside the mesocosms, the diatom-diazotroph association (DDA) het-1 predominated during days 5-15 while the unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacteria UCYN-C predominated during days 15-23. A Trichodesmium bloom was observed in the lagoon (outside the mesocosms) towards the end of the experiment. The zooplankton community was dominated by copepods (63aEuro-% of total abundance) for the duration of the experiment. Using two-source N isotope mixing models we estimated a mean similar to aEuro parts per thousand aEuro-28aEuro-% contribution of DDN to zooplankton nitrogen biomass at the start of the experiment, indicating that the natural summer peak of N-2 fixation in the lagoon was already contributing significantly to the zooplankton. Stimulation of N-2 fixation in the mesocosms corresponded with a generally low-level enhancement of DDN contribution to zooplankton nitrogen biomass, but with a peak of similar to aEuro parts per thousand aEuro-73aEuro-% in mesocosm 1 following the UCYN-C bloom. qPCR analysis targeting four of the common diazotroph groups present in the mesocosms (Trichodesmium, het-1, het-2, UCYN-C) demonstrated that all four were ingested by copepod grazers, and that their abundance in copepod stomachs generally corresponded with their in situ abundance. N-15(2) labelled grazing experiments therefore provided evidence for direct ingestion and assimilation of UCYN-C-derived N by the zooplankton, but not for het-1 and Trichodesmium, supporting an important role of secondary pathways of DDN to the zooplankton for the latter groups, i.e. DDN contributions to the dissolved N pool and uptake by nondiazotrophs. This study appears to provide the first evidence of direct UCYN-C grazing by zooplankton, and indicates that UCYN-C-derived N contributes significantly to the zooplankton food web in the New Caledonia lagoon through a combination of direct grazing and secondary pathways
Geometric Phantom Categories
In this paper we give a construction of phantom categories, i.e. admissible
triangulated subcategories in bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on
smooth projective varieties that have trivial Hochschild homology and trivial
Grothendieck group. We also prove that these phantom categories are phantoms in
a stronger sense, namely, they have trivial K-motives and, hence, all their

Subnanosecond spectral diffusion measurement using photon correlation
Spectral diffusion is a result of random spectral jumps of a narrow line as a
result of a fluctuating environment. It is an important issue in spectroscopy,
because the observed spectral broadening prevents access to the intrinsic line
properties. However, its characteristic parameters provide local information on
the environment of a light emitter embedded in a solid matrix, or moving within
a fluid, leading to numerous applications in physics and biology. We present a
new experimental technique for measuring spectral diffusion based on photon
correlations within a spectral line. Autocorrelation on half of the line and
cross-correlation between the two halves give a quantitative value of the
spectral diffusion time, with a resolution only limited by the correlation
set-up. We have measured spectral diffusion of the photoluminescence of a
single light emitter with a time resolution of 90 ps, exceeding by four orders
of magnitude the best resolution reported to date
Une intervention de groupe brève pour favoriser le bien-être des femmes enceintes pendant la pandémie de COVID-19 et soutenir la résilience des familles
Contexte:
La pandémie de COVID-19 a été associée à une augmentation de la détresse psychologique chez les femmes enceintes. Le présent article vise à évaluer l’acceptabilité du programme STEP-COVID (Soutenir la Transition et l’Engagement dans la Parentalité dans le contexte de la pandémie de COVID-19), une intervention prénatale de groupe en ligne, en mode synchrone, visant à soutenir le bien-être, la mentalisation et la résilience.
Méthode:
Vingt et une femmes enceintes québécoises ont participé au programme et ont complété des mesures des symptômes psychologiques et de la mentalisation avant et après l’intervention ainsi qu’une échelle évaluant leur perception de changements sur des domaines associés à la résilience. Après chaque rencontre, elles ont rempli un questionnaire évaluant leur appréciation du programme.
Résultats:
Les 18 participantes (86 %) ayant complété le programme ont rapporté de hauts taux de satisfaction après chacune des rencontres et au terme de l’intervention. Une diminution des symptômes anxio-dépressifs et des symptômes de stress post-traumatiques et une amélioration des fonctions réflexives sont observées entre le début et la fin du programme. Les participantes ont également rapporté des changements positifs sur des sphères de fonctionnement associées à la résilience.
Conclusion:
Les résultats soutiennent l’acceptabilité du programme STEP-COVID et suggèrent que l’offre d’une intervention de groupe brève en ligne est appréciée par les participantes, semble favoriser une diminution de la détresse psychologique et une amélioration de la mentalisation et pourrait contribuer à la résilience dans le contexte de la pandémie de COVID-19
Beyond the perfect fluid hypothesis for dark energy equation of state
Abandoning the perfect fluid hypothesis, we investigate here the possibility
that the dark energy equation of state (EoS) is a nonlinear function of the
energy density . To this aim, we consider four different EoS describing
classical fluids near thermodynamical critical points and discuss the main
features of cosmological models made out of dust matter and a dark energy term
with the given EoS. Each model is tested against the data on the dimensionless
coordinate distance to Type Ia Supernovae and radio galaxies, the shift and the
acoustic peak parameters and the positions of the first three peaks in the
anisotropy spectrum of the comic microwave background radation. We propose a
possible interpretation of each model in the framework of scalar field
quintessence determining the shape of the self interaction potential
that gives rise to each one of the considered thermodynamical EoS. As a general
result, we demonstrate that replacing the perfect fluid EoS with more generar
expressions gives both the possibility of successfully solving the problem of

Enhanced sequential carrier capture into individual quantum dots and quantum posts controlled by surface acoustic waves
Individual self-assembled Quantum Dots and Quantum Posts are studied under
the influence of a surface acoustic wave. In optical experiments we observe an
acoustically induced switching of the occupancy of the nanostructures along
with an overall increase of the emission intensity. For Quantum Posts,
switching occurs continuously from predominantely charged excitons (dissimilar
number of electrons and holes) to neutral excitons (same number of electrons
and holes) and is independent on whether the surface acoustic wave amplitude is
increased or decreased. For quantum dots, switching is non-monotonic and shows
a pronounced hysteresis on the amplitude sweep direction. Moreover, emission of
positively charged and neutral excitons is observed at high surface acoustic
wave amplitudes. These findings are explained by carrier trapping and
localization in the thin and disordered two-dimensional wetting layer on top of
which Quantum Dots nucleate. This limitation can be overcome for Quantum Posts
where acoustically induced charge transport is highly efficient in a wide
lateral Matrix-Quantum Well.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Childhood trauma may increase risk of psychosis and mood disorder in genetically high-risk children and adolescents by enhancing the accumulation of risk indicators
Background: Genetically high-risk children carry indicators of brain dysfunctions that adult patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder display. The accumulation of risk indicators would have a higher predictive value of a later transition to psychosis or mood disorder than each individual risk indicator. Since more than 50% of adult patients report having been exposed to childhood trauma, we investigated whether exposure to trauma during childhood was associated with the early accumulation of risk indicators in youths at genetic risk.
Methods: We first inspected the characteristics of childhood trauma in 200 young offspring (51% male) born to a parent affected by DSM-IV schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder. A subsample of 109 offspring (51% male) had measurements on four risk indicators: cognitive impairments, psychotic-like experiences, nonpsychotic nonmood childhood DSM diagnoses, poor global functioning. Trauma was assessed from direct interviews and reviews of lifetime medical and school records of offspring.
Results: Trauma was present in 86 of the 200 offspring (43%). The relative risk of accumulating risk indicators in offspring exposed to trauma was 3.33 (95% CI 1.50, 7.36), but more pronounced in males (RR = 4.64, 95% CI 1.71, 12.6) than females (RR = 2.01, 95% CI 0.54, 7.58).
Conclusion: Childhood trauma would be related to the accumulation of developmental precursors of major psychiatric disorders and more so in young boys at high genetic risk. Our findings may provide leads for interventions targeting the early mechanisms underlying the established relation between childhood trauma and adult psychiatric disorders
Metastatic gastric cancer presenting with shoulder-hand syndrome: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Shoulder-hand syndrome is a relatively rare clinical entity classified as a complex regional pain syndrome type 1 and consisting essentially of a painful 'frozen shoulder' with disability, swelling, vasomotor or dystrophic changes in the homolateral hand. The pathophysiology is not completely clear but a predominant 'sympathetic' factor affecting the neural and vascular supply to the affected parts seems to be involved. Shoulder-hand syndrome has been related to many surgical, orthopedic, neurological and medical conditions; it is more often seen after myocardial infarction, hemiplegia and painful conditions of neck and shoulder, such as trauma, tumors, cervical discogenic or intraforaminal diseases and shoulder calcific tendinopathy, but has also been associated with herpetic infections, brain and lung tumors, thoracoplasty and drugs including phenobarbitone and isoniazid. The diagnosis of shoulder-hand syndrome is primarily clinical, but imaging studies, particularly bone scintigraphy, may be useful to exclude other disorders.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 67-year-old woman who presented with shoulder-hand syndrome as the initial manifestation of gastric cancer which had metastasized to bone.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Wider investigations are advisable in patients with atypical shoulder-hand syndrome. To the best of the authors' knowledge this is the first case of shoulder-hand syndrome associated with metastatic gastric cancer.</p
