A quantified triple bottom line for tourism: experimental results
The tradition of tourism businesses and regional tourism industries is to measure their value to the host community by jobs, wages and tax revenues even though every member of that community is impacted on a daily basis though a broad variety of impacts. This paper demonstrates a conceptual approach for measuring the relative importance of the major dimensions of community quality of life that can be influenced by the tourism industry in order to calculate an indication of overall impact on the well being of community residents. Furthermore, we have formulated a conjoint model that values this overall performance in monetary units. A conjoint model for estimating importance is successfully implemented using samples of college students and tourism industry professionals in the US and Cyprus. A monetary version of Triple Bottom Line impacts is calculated for the impacts of a specific hypothetical tourism business development
Intercomparison of carbonate chemistry measurements on a cruise in northwestern European shelf seas
Four carbonate system variables were measured in surface waters during a cruise aimed at investigating ocean acidification impacts traversing northwestern European shelf seas in the summer of 2011. High-resolution surface water data were collected for partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2; using two independent instruments) and pH using the total pH scale (pHT), in addition to discrete measurements of total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon. We thus overdetermined the carbonate system (four measured variables, two degrees of freedom), which allowed us to evaluate the level of agreement between the variables on a cruise whose main aim was not intercomparison, and thus where conditions were more representative of normal working conditions. Calculations of carbonate system variables from other measurements generally compared well with direct observations of the same variables (Pearsonâs correlation coefficient always greater than or equal to 0.94; mean residuals were similar to the respective accuracies of the measurements). We therefore conclude that four of the independent data sets of carbonate chemistry variables were of high quality. A diurnal cycle with a maximum amplitude of 41 ÎŒatm was observed in the difference between the pCO2 values obtained by the two independent analytical pCO2 systems, and this was partly attributed to irregular seawater flows to the equilibrator and partly to biological activity inside the seawater supply and one of the equilibrators. We discuss how these issues can be addressed to improve carbonate chemistry data quality on future research cruises
On-chip two-octave supercontinuum generation by enhancing self-steepening of optical pulses
Dramatic advances in supercontinuum generation have been made recently using
photonic crystal fibers, but it is quite challenging to obtain an
octave-spanning supercontinuum on a chip, partially because of strong
dispersion in high-index-contrast nonlinear integrated waveguides. We show by
simulation that extremely flat and low dispersion can be achieved in silicon
nitride slot waveguides over a wavelength band of 500 nm. Different from
previously reported supercontinua that were generated either by higher-order
soliton fission in anomalous dispersion regime or by self phase modulation in
normal dispersion regime, a two-octave supercontinuum from 630 to 2650 nm (360
THz in total) can be generated by greatly enhancing self-steepening in
nonlinear pulse propagation in almost zero dispersion regime, when an optical
shock as short as 3 fs is formed, which enables on-chip ultra-wide-band
applications
Global Existence and Regularity for the 3D Stochastic Primitive Equations of the Ocean and Atmosphere with Multiplicative White Noise
The Primitive Equations are a basic model in the study of large scale Oceanic
and Atmospheric dynamics. These systems form the analytical core of the most
advanced General Circulation Models. For this reason and due to their
challenging nonlinear and anisotropic structure the Primitive Equations have
recently received considerable attention from the mathematical community.
In view of the complex multi-scale nature of the earth's climate system, many
uncertainties appear that should be accounted for in the basic dynamical models
of atmospheric and oceanic processes. In the climate community stochastic
methods have come into extensive use in this connection. For this reason there
has appeared a need to further develop the foundations of nonlinear stochastic
partial differential equations in connection with the Primitive Equations and
more generally.
In this work we study a stochastic version of the Primitive Equations. We
establish the global existence of strong, pathwise solutions for these
equations in dimension 3 for the case of a nonlinear multiplicative noise. The
proof makes use of anisotropic estimates, estimates on the
pressure and stopping time arguments.Comment: To appear in Nonlinearit
Re-imagining the data collection and analysis research process by proposing a rapid qualitative data collection and analytic roadmap applied to the dynamic context of precision medicine
Our implementation science study focuses on implementing a new way of practice and offers methodological specificity about how to rapidly investigate an individually tailored precision medicine intervention. A qualitative study advancing a new methodology for speedily identifying barriers and enablers to implementation in the context of childhood cancer. Data were collected through rapid ethnography, coded using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research, and analysed by Sentiment Analysis. Thirty-eight data collection events occurred during 14 multidisciplinary tumour board meetings, 14 curation meetings, and 10 informal conversations. Sentiment Analysis distilled Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research codes to reveal key barriers and enablers to implementation. A traffic light labelling system has been used to present levels of positivity and negativity (green for strong enablers and red for strong barriers), highlighting levels of concern regarding implementation. Within the intervention design characteristics, âAdaptabilityâ was the strongest enabler and âDesign quality and safetyâ the strongest barrier. Among the contextual factors: âNetworks and communicationâ were the strongest enabler, and âAvailable resourcesâ were the strongest barrier. Overall, there was a higher percentage of negative sentiment towards intervention design characteristics and contextual factors than positive sentiment, while more concerns were raised about intervention design factors than contextual factors. This study offers a rapid qualitative data collection and analytic methodological roadmap for establishing barriers and enablers to a paediatric precision medicine intervention
Catalytic self-folding of 2D structures through cascading magnet reactions
While thousands of proteins involved in development of the human body are capable of self-assembling in a distributed manner from merely 20 types of amino acid, macroscopic products that can be assembled spontaneously from âaliveâ components remains an aspiration in engineering. To attain such a mechanism, a major challenge lies in understanding which attributes from the bio-molecular realm must be leveraged at the macro-scale. Inspired by protein folding, we present a centimetre-size 1D tile chain whose self-folding processes are directed by structure-embedded magnetic interactions, which can theoretically self-assemble into convex 2D structures of any size or shape without the aid of a global âcontrollerâ. Each tile holds two magnets contained in paths designed to control their interactions. Once initiated by a magnetic unit (termed Catalyst), the chain self-reconfigures by consuming magnetic potential energy stored between magnet pairs, until the final 2D structure is reached at an energetic minimum. Both simulation and experimental results are presented to illustrate the methodâs efficacy on chains of arbitrary length. Results demonstrate the promise of a physically implemented, bottom-up, and scalable self-assembly method for novel 2D structure manufacturing, bridging the bio-molecular and mechanical realms
Scholarly communication in transition: The use of question marks in the titles of scientific articles in medicine, life sciences and physics 1966â2005
The titles of scientific articles have a special significance. We examined nearly 20 million scientific articles and recorded the development of articles with a question mark at the end of their
titles over the last 40 years. Our study was confined to the disciplines of physics, life sciences and medicine, where we found a significant increase from 50% to more than 200% in the number of articles with question-mark titles. We looked at the principle functions and structure of the titles of scientific papers, and we assume that marketing aspects are one of the decisive factors behind the growing usage of question-mark titles in scientific articles
