Equity and Justice in High Demand: 66 Wheeler at the OMB
The profession of urban and regional planning often understands itself as one of the crown disciplines, one that has higher societal aspirations, one that can solve the "big problems" of today's world through spatial and policy interventions. Its ideal is based on what are portrayed as good planning principles: the just and equal distribution of wealth, goods and services. The practice, however, is often far off from its ideal. What is to be blamed for this
Verticality, Public Space and the Role of Resident Participation in Revitalizing Suburban High-rise Buildings
In this paper, we look at the role that public space may take on in the redevelopment of suburban high-risebuildings in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). We are interested in what role public space playsin the imaginary and how different forms of public participation in planning processes are beneficial to theoutcome of the redesign of high-rise buildings who are in need of repair and retrofitting due to their age andtheir social stigmatization. These suburban high-rises offer insight into newly proliferating forms of public space, and speak to the need for more diverse and specific physical, social and political articulations of public space. We find that by examining public space through the lens of verticality we are able to see how different planninginterventions, urban development processes, spatial contexts and competing imaginaries produce very differentand often hybrid forms. We base our findings upon selected planning and policy documents, media reports anddiscourse, and input from interviews with several locals involved in planning processes
Editor's Introduction: Public Space Beyond The City Centre: Suburban and Periurban Dynamics
Through this special issue, we bring together papers interested in public space beyond the city centre. That is, public space in suburban and periurban locations, including high-rise neighbourhoods and new exurban divisions, and in communities located at the interstices of the city-region. We are interested in how the values associated with public spaceâas an accessible site open to a range of uses, and a place of collective engagement and interactionâmap out as we step away from downtown. Additionally, we are concerned with how struggles over and within public space proceed in non-central places
Common Areas, Common Causes: Public Space in HighâRise Buildings During Covidâ19
This article explores forms of public space that have been rendered palpable during the Covidâ19 pandemic: public spaces in highârise buildings. We consider both physical and social public space in this context, thinking about the safety of both common areas and amenities in buildings and the emergence of new publics around the conditions of tower living during the pandemic (particularly focusing on tenant struggles). We determine that the planning, use, maintenance, and social production of public space in highârise buildings are topics of increasing concern and urgency and that the presence of public space in the vertical built forms and lifestyles proliferating in urban regions complicates common understandings of public space. We argue that the questions raised by the pandemic call upon us to reconsider the meanings of public space
From planning to execution to the future: An overview of a concerted effort to enhance biological control in apple, pear, and walnut orchards in the western U.S.
We embarked on a large project designed to help enhance biological control in apple, pear and walnut orchards in the western U.S., where management programs were in the midst of a transition from older organo-phosphate insecticides to mating disruption and newer reduced-risk insecticides. A âpesticide replacement therapyâ approach resulted in unstable management programs with unpredictable outbreaks of spider mites and aphids. Our project was designed to provide growers and pest managers with information on the effects of newer pesticide chemistries on a suite of representative natural enemies in both the laboratory and field, potential of new monitoring tools using herbivore-induced plant volatiles and floral volatiles, phenology of the key natural enemy species, economic consequences of using an enhanced biological control program, and value of an outreach program to get project outcomes into the hands of decision-makers. We present an overview of both the successes and failures of the project and of new projects that have spun off from this project to further enhance biological control in our systems in the near future

Polygenic prediction of educational attainment within and between families from genome-wide association analyses in 3 million individuals
We conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of educational attainment (EA) in a sample of ~3 million individuals and identify 3,952 approximately uncorrelated genome-wide-significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A genome-wide polygenic predictor, or polygenic index (PGI), explains 12-16% of EA variance and contributes to risk prediction for ten diseases. Direct effects (i.e., controlling for parental PGIs) explain roughly half the PGI's magnitude of association with EA and other phenotypes. The correlation between mate-pair PGIs is far too large to be consistent with phenotypic assortment alone, implying additional assortment on PGI-associated factors. In an additional GWAS of dominance deviations from the additive model, we identify no genome-wide-significant SNPs, and a separate X-chromosome additive GWAS identifies 57

Genome-wide association study identifies 74 loci associated with educational attainment
Educational attainment is strongly influenced by social and other environmental factors, but genetic factors are estimated to account for at least 20% of the variation across individuals1. Here we report the results of a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for educational attainment that extends our earlier discovery sample1,2 of 101,069 individuals to 293,723 individuals, and a replication study in an independent sample of 111,349 individuals from the UK Biobank. We identify 74 genome-wide significant loci associated with the number of years of schooling completed. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with educational attainment are disproportionately found in genomic regions regulating gene expression in the fetal brain. Candidate genes are preferentially expressed in neural tissue, especially during the prenatal period, and enriched for biological pathways involved in neural development. Our findings demonstrate that, even for a behavioural phenotype that is mostly environmentally determined, a well-powered GWAS identifies replicable associated genetic variants that suggest biologically relevant pathways. Because educational attainment is measured in large numbers of individuals, it will continue to be useful as a proxy phenotype in efforts to characterize the genetic influences of related phenotypes, including cognition and neuropsychiatric diseases
