    Relativ unbemerkt von der neuen Linken hat sich in den vergangenen Jahren in der Frauenbewegung eine Diskussion entwickelt über den Erkenntniswert der marxistischen Theorie zur Analyse des Geschlechterantagonismus. Er wird in der Frauenbewegung recht hoch veranschlagt, ungeachtet der Feststellung, daß die traditionelle marxistische Theorie geschlechtlicher Arbeitsteilung nicht sonderlich Rechnung trägt. Darüberhinaus lehnen Theoretikerinnen der Frauenbewegung den vom Marxismus behaupteten Primat des Klassenantagonismus vor dem der Geschlechter in der Regel ab, Ausgangspunkt für Analysen ist häufig die Annahme, daß das geschichtlich ältere Untcrdrückungsverhältnis das der Geschlechter ist und dag kapitalistische Ausbeutung eine historisch besondere Ausprägung des Patriarchats darstellt. Marx' Kapitalanalyse wird deshalb gelegentlich zur Formulierung einer Patriarchatstheoric herangezogen. Andere gehen wieder von enger gefaßten Zielen aus und sind daran interessiert, Frauenunterdrückung ausschließlich in der kapitalistischen Gesellschaft zu analysieren und diesen Sachverhalt in Marx' Kapitalanalyse zu integrieren oder sie um diesen Gegenstand zu erweitern. Kontrovers scheint jedoch nicht so sehr die Frage einer Patriarchats- oder erweiterten Kapitalismustheorie zu sein, sondern die Frage des methodischen und inhaltlichen Zugangs zur marxistischen Theorie. Die Art und Weise, wie diese Frage angegangen wird, schliegt immer auch politische Positionsbestimmungen ein, ob sie nun deutlich formuliert sind oder nicht

    High spatial resolution measurement of oxygen consumption rates in permeable sediments

    A method is presented for the measurement of depth profiles of volumetric oxygen consumption rates in permeable sediments with high spatial resolution. When combined with in situ oxygen microprofiles measured by microsensors, areal rates of aerobic respiration in sediments can be calculated. The method is useful for characterizing sediments exposed to highly dynamic advective water exchange, such as intertidal sandy sediments. The method is based on percolating the sediment in a sampling core with aerated water and monitoring oxygen in the sediment using either an oxygen microelectrode or a planar oxygen optode. The oxygen consumption rates are determined using three approaches: (1) as the initial rate of oxygen decrease measured at discrete points after the percolation is stopped, (2) from oxygen microprofiles measured sequentially after the percolation is stopped, and (3) as a derivative of steady-state oxygen microprofiles measured during a constant percolation of the sediment. The spatial resolution of a typical 3 to 4 cm profile within a measurement time of 1 to 2 h is better with planar optodes (˜0.3 mm) then with microelectrodes (2 to 5 mm), whereas the precision of oxygen consumption rate measurements at individual points is similar (0.1 to 0.5 µmol L–1 min–1) for both sensing methods. The method is consistent with the established methods (interfacial gradients combined with Fick’s law of diffusion, benthic-chambers), when tested on the same sediment sample under identical, diffusion-controlled conditions

    Young children with fetal alcohol spetrum disorder - communication profiles

    The aim of the article is to describe the communication profiles of five young children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) from 4 to 58months of age. A collective case-study design following a quantitative and descriptive approach was used to describe the communication profilesof the participants. The results are described according to the participants’ case histories and a four-level early communication assessment framework.The significant findings were that all participants were in foster care, and presented with incomplete case histories, general developmentaldelays and delays regarding all aspects of their communication abilities. An increase in the severity of the spectrum disorder across the participants’combined communication profiles was also identified. Participants presented with complex multiple neurodevelopmental needs thatshould be viewed within a developmental systems and ecological framework. The importance of early identification, diagnosis and assessmentof infants and young children prenatally exposed to alcohol, the identification of precursors to communication impairment at a very early age,and the need for individualised early communication intervention to improve developmental outcomes within a family-centred approach arediscussed. Suggestions for future research to accumulate knowledge about FASD in the field of early communication intervention are made

    One fungus, which genes?: development and assessment of universal primers for potential secondary fungal DNA barcodes

    The aim of this study was to assess potential candidate gene regions and corresponding universal primer pairs as secondary DNA barcodes for the fungal kingdom, additional to ITS rDNA as primary barcode. Amplification efficiencies of 14 (partially) universal primer pairs targeting eight genetic markers were tested across > 1 500 species (1 931 strains or specimens) and the outcomes of almost twenty thousand (19 577) polymerase chain reactions were evaluated. We tested several well-known primer pairs that amplify: i) sections of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene large subunit (D1-D2 domains of 26/28S); ii) the complete internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1/2); iii) partial beta-tubulin II (TUB2); iv) gamma-actin (ACT); v) translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1 alpha); and vi) the second largest subunit of RNA-polymerase II (partial RPB2, section 5-6). Their PCR efficiencies were compared with novel candidate primers corresponding to: i) the fungal-specific translation elongation factor 3 (TEF3); ii) a small ribosomal protein necessary for t-RNA docking; iii) the 60S L10 (L1) RP; iv) DNA topoisomerase I (TOPI); v) phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK); vi) hypothetical protein LNS2; and vii) alternative sections of TEF1 alpha. Results showed that several gene sections are accessible to universal primers (or primers universal for phyla) yielding a single PCR-product. Barcode gap and multi-dimensional scaling analyses revealed that some of the tested candidate markers have universal properties providing adequate infra- and inter-specific variation that make them attractive barcodes for species identification. Among these gene sections, a novel high fidelity primer pair for TEF1 alpha, already widely used as a phylogenetic marker in mycology, has potential as a supplementary DNA barcode with superior resolution to ITS. Both TOPI and PGK show promise for the Ascomycota, while TOPI and LNS2 are attractive for the Pucciniomycotina, for which universal primers for ribosomal subunits often fail

    The Amsterdam Declaration on Fungal Nomenclature

    The Amsterdam Declaration on Fungal Nomenclature was agreed at an international symposium convened in Amsterdam on 19–20 April 2011 under the auspices of the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF). The purpose of the symposium was to address the issue of whether or how the current system of naming pleomorphic fungi should be maintained or changed now that molecular data are routinely available. The issue is urgent as mycologists currently follow different practices, and no consensus was achieved by a Special Committee appointed in 2005 by the International Botanical Congress to advise on the problem. The Declaration recognizes the need for an orderly transitition to a single-name nomenclatural system for all fungi, and to provide mechanisms to protect names that otherwise then become endangered. That is, meaning that priority should be given to the first described name, except where that is a younger name in general use when the first author to select a name of a pleomorphic monophyletic genus is to be followed, and suggests controversial cases are referred to a body, such as the ICTF, which will report to the Committee for Fungi. If appropriate, the ICTF could be mandated to promote the implementation of the Declaration. In addition, but not forming part of the Declaration, are reports of discussions held during the symposium on the governance of the nomenclature of fungi, and the naming of fungi known only from an environmental nucleic acid sequence in particular. Possible amendments to the Draft BioCode (2011) to allow for the needs of mycologists are suggested for further consideration, and a possible example of how a fungus only known from the environment might be described is presented
