    A Ten-Year Study of Individual Outcomes From a Fraternity Central Office Leadership Program

    Fraternities promote leadership development as a benefit of membership. Researchers examined fraternal commitment and engagement of participants attending a leadership program offered by a fraternity central office. This study was designed as an outcomes assessment and included 2,065 cases, the total number of fraternity men attending in the ten-year span from 1999-2008. The following data were examined: attendance, undergraduate leadership, alumni/volunteer involvement, and donor rosters, as well as post-program survey evaluations. Descriptive statistics and significance tests revealed that (a) 63% of participants took a formal undergraduate leadership role, (b) 8% of participants took a volunteer advisory role, (c) 8% became donors, and (d) some years were more developmental for participants than others

    Sedimentary inputs to the Nankai subduction zone: The importance of dispersed ash

    We examine the importance of dispersed volcanic ash as a critical component of the aluminosilicate sediment entering the Nankai Trough, located south of Japan’s island of Honshu, via the subducting Philippine Sea plate. Multivariate statistical analyses of an extensive major, trace, and rare earth element data set from bulk sediment and discrete ash layers at Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Sites C0011 and C0012 quantitatively determine the abundance and accumulation of multiple aluminosilicate inputs to the Nankai subduction zone. We identify the eolian input of continental material to both sites, and we further find that there are an additional three ash sources from Kyushu and Honshu, Japan and other regions. Some of these ash sources may themselves represent mixtures of ash inputs, although the final compositions appear statistically distinct. The dispersed ash comprises 38 ± 7 weight percent (wt%) of the bulk sediment at Site C0011, and 34 ± 4 wt% at Site C0012. When considering the entire sediment thickness at Site C0011, the dispersed ash component supplies 38000 ± 7000 g/cm2 of material to the Nankai subduction system, whereas Site C0012 supplies 20000 ± 3000 g/cm2. These values are enormous compared to the ~2500 g/cm2 (C0011) and ~1200 g/cm2 (C0012) of ash in the discrete ash layers. Therefore, the mass of volcanic ash and chemically equivalent alteration products (e.g., smectite) that are dispersed throughout the stratigraphic succession of bulk sediment appears to be up to 15–17 times greater than the mass of discrete ash layers. The composition of the dispersed ash component at Site C0011 appears linked to that of the discrete layers, and the mass accumulation rate for dispersed ash correlates best with discrete ash layer thickness. In contrast, at Site C0012 the mass accumulation rate for dispersed ash correlates better with the number of ash layers. Together, the discrete ash layers, dispersed ash, and clay-mineral assemblages present a complete record of volcanism and erosion of volcanic sources; and indicate that mass balances and subduction factory budgets should include the mass of dispersed ash for a more accurate assessment of volcanic contributions to large-scale geochemical cycling

    Deletion in chromosome 6 spanning alpha-synuclein and multimerin1 loci in the Rab27a/b double knockout mouse

Scientific Reports, 12(1), (2022): 9837, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-022-13557-8.We report an incidental 358.5 kb deletion spanning the region encoding for alpha-synuclein (αsyn) and multimerin1 (Mmrn1) in the Rab27a/Rab27b double knockout (DKO) mouse line previously developed by Tolmachova and colleagues in 2007. Western blot and RT-PCR studies revealed lack of αsyn expression at either the mRNA or protein level in Rab27a/b DKO mice. PCR of genomic DNA from Rab27a/b DKO mice demonstrated at least partial deletion of the Snca locus using primers targeted to exon 4 and exon 6. Most genes located in proximity to the Snca locus, including Atoh1, Atoh2, Gm5570, Gm4410, Gm43894, and Grid2, were shown not to be deleted by PCR except for Mmrn1. Using whole genomic sequencing, the complete deletion was mapped to chromosome 6 (60,678,870–61,037,354), a slightly smaller deletion region than that previously reported in the C57BL/6J substrain maintained by Envigo. Electron microscopy of cortex from these mice demonstrates abnormally enlarged synaptic terminals with reduced synaptic vesicle density, suggesting potential interplay between Rab27 isoforms and αsyn, which are all highly expressed at the synaptic terminal. Given this deletion involving several genes, the Rab27a/b DKO mouse line should be used with caution or with appropriate back-crossing to other C57BL/6J mouse substrain lines without this deletion.This study was supported by NIH [R56NS115767 (TAY), RF1NS115767-01A1 (TAY), P50NS108675 (TAY), and NINDS/NIA RF1NS078165 (JRM)]

    Geochemical approaches to the quantification of dispersed volcanic ash in marine sediment

    Volcanic ash has long been recognized in marine sediment, and given the prevalence of oceanic and continental arc volcanism around the globe in regard to widespread transport of ash, its presence is nearly ubiquitous. However, the presence/absence of very fine-grained ash material, and identification of its composition in particular, is challenging given its broad classification as an “aluminosilicate” component in sediment. Given this challenge, many studies of ash have focused on discrete layers (that is, layers of ash that are of millimeter-to-centimeter or greater thickness, and their respective glass shards) found in sequences at a variety of locations and timescales and how to link their presence with a number of Earth processes. The ash that has been mixed into the bulk sediment, known as dispersed ash, has been relatively unstudied, yet represents a large fraction of the total ash in a given sequence. The application of a combined geochemical and statistical technique has allowed identification of this dispersed ash as part of the original ash contribution to the sediment. In this paper, we summarize the development of these geochemical/statistical techniques and provide case studies from the quantification of dispersed ash in the Caribbean Sea, equatorial Pacific Ocean, and northwest Pacific Ocean. These geochemical studies (and their sedimentological precursors of smear slides) collectively demonstrate that local and regional arc-related ash can be an important component of sedimentary sequences throughout large regions of the ocean

    Patient and public involvement in a UK National Institute for Health Research Programme Grant for Applied Research:Experiences from the Chronic Headache Education and Self-management Study (CHESS)

    Background: Patient and public involvement (PPI) plays a crucial role in ensuring research is carried out in conjunction with the people that it will impact upon. In this article, we present our experiences and reflections from working collaboratively with patients and public through the lifetime of an National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) programme grant; the Chronic Headache Education and Self-management Study (CHESS) which took place between 2015 and 2020. PPI over the course of CHESS: We worked closely with three leading UK migraine charities and a lay advisory group throughout the programme. We followed NIHR standards and used the Guidance for Reporting Involvement of Patients and the Public checklist. We consulted our PPI contacts using a variety of methods depending on the phase of the study and the nature of the request. This included emails, discussions, and face-to-face contact. PPI members contributed throughout the study in the programme development, in the grant application, ethics documentation, and trial oversight. During the feasibility study; in supporting the development of a classification interview for chronic headache by participating in a headache classification conference, assessing the relevance, and acceptability of patient-reported outcome measures by helping to analyse cognitive interview data, and testing the smartphone application making suggestions on how best to present the summary of data collected for participants. Due to PPI contribution, the content and duration of the study intervention were adapted and a Delphi study with consensus meeting developed a core outcome set for migraine studies. Conclusions: The involvement of the public and patients in CHESS has allowed us to shape its overall design, intervention development, and establish a core outcome set for future migraine studies. We have reflected on many learning points for the future application of PPI

    Depositional architecture, provenance, and tectonic/eustatic modulation of Miocene submarine fans in the Shikoku Basin: Results from Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment

    Seismostratigraphy, coring, and logging while drilling during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expeditions 319, 322, and 333 (Sites C0011/C0012) show three Miocene submarine fans in the NE Shikoku Basin, with broadly coeval deposits at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1177 and Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 297 (NW Shikoku Basin). The sediment dispersal patterns have major implications for paleogeographies at that time. The oldest, finer-grained (Kyushu) fan has sheet-like geometry; quartz-rich flows were fed mostly from an ancestral landmass in the East China Sea. During prolonged hemipelagic mud deposition at C0011-C0012 (~12.2 to 9.1 Ma), sand supply continued at Sites 1177 and 297. Sand delivery to much of the Shikoku Basin halted during a phase of sinistral strike slip to oblique plate motion, after which the Daiichi Zenisu Fan (~9.1 to 8.0 Ma) was fed by submarine channels. The youngest fan (Daini Zenisu; ~8.0 to 7.6 Ma) has sheet-like geometry with thick-bedded, coarse-grained pumiceous sandstones. The pumice fragments were fed from a mixed provenance that included the collision zone of the Izu-Bonin and Honshu Arcs. The shift from channelized to sheet-like flows was favored by renewal of relatively rapid northward subduction, which accentuated the trench as a bathymetric depression. Increased sand supply appears to correlate with long-term eustatic lowstands of sea level. The stratigraphic position and 3-D geometry of the sandbodies have important implications for subduction-related processes, including the potential for focused fluid flow and fluid overpressures above and below the plate boundary fault: In sheet-like sands, pathways for fluid flow have greater horizontal permeability compared with those in channel sands

    General practitioners’ views on emergency care treatment plans; an on-line survey

    Background: A holistic approach to emergency care treatment planning is needed to ensure that patients’ preferences are considered should their clinical condition deteriorate. To address this Emergency Care and Treatment Plans (ECTPs) have been introduced. Little is known about their use in general practice. Aim: To survey general practitioners’ (GPs’) experiences of, and views on, using ECTPs. Design & setting: On-line survey of GPs practising in England. Method: A survey of 841 GPs using the monthly on-line survey provided by Medeconnect, a market research company. Results: ECTP forms were used by 49% of respondents’ practices (84% of these were Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment (ReSPECT) plans); 51% used do not attempt cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (DNACPR) forms. GPs are the predominant professional group completing ECTPs in the community. There was broad support for a wider range of community-based health and social care professionals being able to complete ECTPs. There was no system for reviewing ECTPs in 20% of respondents’ practices. When compared to using a DNACPR form GPs using a ReSPECT form for emergency care treatment planning were more comfortable having these conversations with patients (OR =1.72, 95% CI 1.1–2.69) and family members (OR =1.85 (95% CI 1.19–2.87). Conclusion: The potential benefits and challenges of widening the pool of health and social care professionals initiating and / or completing the ECTP process needs consideration. ReSPECT plans appears to make GPs more comfortable with ECTP discussions supporting their implementation. Practice-based systems for reviewing ECTP decisions should be strengthened

    Assignment of epidemiological lineages in an emerging pandemic using the pangolin tool.

    Funder: Oxford Martin School, University of OxfordThe response of the global virus genomics community to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has been unprecedented, with significant advances made towards the 'real-time' generation and sharing of SARS-CoV-2 genomic data. The rapid growth in virus genome data production has necessitated the development of new analytical methods that can deal with orders of magnitude of more genomes than previously available. Here, we present and describe Phylogenetic Assignment of Named Global Outbreak Lineages (pangolin), a computational tool that has been developed to assign the most likely lineage to a given SARS-CoV-2 genome sequence according to the Pango dynamic lineage nomenclature scheme. To date, nearly two million virus genomes have been submitted to the web-application implementation of pangolin, which has facilitated the SARS-CoV-2 genomic epidemiology and provided researchers with access to actionable information about the pandemic's transmission lineages

    Duality Cascade in Brane Inflation

    We show that brane inflation is very sensitive to tiny sharp features in extra dimensions, including those in the potential and in the warp factor. This can show up as observational signatures in the power spectrum and/or non-Gaussianities of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR). One general example of such sharp features is a succession of small steps in a warped throat, caused by Seiberg duality cascade using gauge/gravity duality. We study the cosmological observational consequences of these steps in brane inflation. Since the steps come in a series, the prediction of other steps and their properties can be tested by future data and analysis. It is also possible that the steps are too close to be resolved in the power spectrum, in which case they may show up only in the non-Gaussianity of the CMB temperature fluctuations and/or EE polarization. We study two cases. In the slow-roll scenario where steps appear in the inflaton potential, the sensitivity of brane inflation to the height and width of the steps is increased by several orders of magnitude comparing to that in previously studied large field models. In the IR DBI scenario where steps appear in the warp factor, we find that the glitches in the power spectrum caused by these sharp features are generally small or even unobservable, but associated distinctive non-Gaussianity can be large. Together with its large negative running of the power spectrum index, this scenario clearly illustrates how rich and different a brane inflationary scenario can be when compared to generic slow-roll inflation.
