The effect of distributed exchange parameters on magnetocaloric refrigeration capacity in amorphous and nanocomposite materials
The temperature dependent magnetization of nanocomposite alloys has been fit with a modified Handrich-Kobe equation with an asymmetric exchange fluctuation parameter combined with the Arrott-Noakes equation. The two equations of state are combined to calculate the entropy change in the magnetocaloric effect associated with the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transformation. The complete fit for the M(T) of (Fe70Ni30)88Zr7B4Cu nanocomposite powder is accomplished by combining the two theories. We investigate the broadening of the second-order transition arising from asymmetric exchange parameters and resulting from the fluctuations of interatomic spacing found in an amorphous matrix and the asymmetric dependence of exchange energy on interatomic spacing. The magnetic entropy curve revealed extra broadening with a refrigeration capacity (RC) value of 135 J/kg at 5 T, which is comparable to (Fe76Cr8-xMoxCu1B15) ribbons, which have a RC value of 180 J/kg for the same applied field. Broadening of the magnetic entropy can lead to larger RC values and a wider working temperature range, making nanocomposite alloys promising for magnetocaloric applications
Combined XPS and contact angle studies of ethylene vinyl acetate and polyvinyl acetate blends
Cataloged from PDF version of article. In this study, we prepared thin films by blending ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA) containing 12-33 (wt.%) vinyl acetate (VA) with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and high density polyethylene homopolymers. Large area micropatterns having controlled protrusion sizes were obtained by phase-separation especially for the PVAc/EVA-33 blends using dip coating. These surfaces were characterized by XPS and contact angle measurements. A reasonably linear relation was found between the VA content on the surface (wt.%) obtained from XPS analysis and the VA content in bulk especially for PVAc/EVA-33 blend surfaces. PE segments were more enriched on the surface than that of the bulk for pure EVA copolymer surfaces similar to previous reports and VA enrichment was found on the EVA/HDPE blend surfaces due to high molecular weight of HDPE. Water theta(e) decreased with the increase in the VA content on the blend surface due to the polarity of VA. A good agreement was obtained between gamma(-)(s) and atomic oxygen surface concentration with the increase of VA content. The applicability of Cassie-Baxter equation was tested and found that it gave consistent results with the experimental water contact angles for the case where VA content was lower than 55 wt.% in the bulk composition. The effect of kinesio taping versus stretching techniques on muscle soreness, and flexibility during recovery from nordic hamstring exercise
WOS: 000396418800007PubMed ID: 28167188The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of static stretching, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching, or kinesio taping (KT) on muscle soreness and flexibility during recovery from exercise. Sixty-five females were randomly assigned to four groups: PNF stretching (n = 15), static stretching (n = 16), KT (n = 17), and control (n = 17). All participants performed nordic hamstring exercise (5 sets of 8 repetitions). In all groups, hamstring flexibility at 24 h and 48 h was not changed from baseline (p > .05). The muscle soreness was measured higher at 48 h post-exercise compared with baseline in the control group (p = .04) and at 24 h post-exercise compared with baseline in the PNF group (p .05). The KT application and pre-exercise stretching have no contribute to flexibility at 24 h and 48 h after exercise, but may attenuate muscle soreness. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Single \pi^- production in np collisions for excess energies up to 90 MeV
The quasifree reaction np\to pp\pim was studied in a kinematically complete
experiment by bombarding a liquid hydrogen target with a deuteron beam of
momentum 1.85 GeV/c and analyzing the data along the lines of the spectator
model. In addition to the three charged ejectiles the spectator proton was also
detected in the large-acceptance time-of-flight spectrometer COSY-TOF. It was
identified by its momentum and flight direction thus yielding access to the
Fermi motion of the bound neutron and to the effective neutron 4-momentum
vector which differed from event to event. A range of almost 90
MeV excess energy above threshold was covered. Energy dependent angular
distributions, invariant mass spectra as well as fully covered Dalitz plots
were deduced. Sizeable FSI effects were found as were contributions of
and partial waves. The behavior of the elementary cross section
close to threshold is discussed in view of new cross section
data. In comparison with existing literature data the results provide a
sensitive test of the spectator model.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJ
Improved study of a possible Theta+ production in the pp -> p K0 sigma+ reaction with the COSY-TOF spectrometer
The pp -> p K0 Sigma+ reaction was investigated with the TOF spectrometer at
COSY at 3.059 GeV/c incident beam momentum. The main objective was to clarify
whether or not a narrow exotic S = +1 resnance, the Theta+ pentaquark, is
populated at 1.53 GeV/c2 in the K0 p subsystem with a data sample of much
higher statistical significance compared to the previously reported data in
this channel. An analysis of these data does not confirm the existence of the
Theta+ pentaquark. This is expressed as an upper limit for the cross section
sigma (pp -> p K0 Sigma+) < 0.15 microbarn at the 95 percent confidence level.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Finite Element Analysis of a PTO Shaft Used in an Agricultural Tractor
This study describes a finite element method (FEM) based deformation simulation procedure for a power take off (PTO) shaft in an agricultural tractor. The agricultural tractor is a mobile power source in agricultural fields. The Agricultural tractor transmits power to the working implement through several systems independently. Most especially, rotary elements used in agricultural machinery take the required power and movement from the tractor take off (PTO) shaft. During this operation, the PTO shaft experiences a high dynamic loading condition such as excessive instant (impact) loading. This may cause an undesired failure case for the PTO shaft. In order to prevent such undesired failures, loading condition and stress distribution on the component should be described properly; however, an accurate description of the structural stress distribution on the shaft becomes an important problem. In this content, a case study was carried out on a failed PTO shaft, as described in this paper. The aim of this case study is to exhibit the stress distribution on the PTO shaft through finite element analysis under a torsional loading case which may be considered as the main cause of the failure. Visual outputs from the simulation results revealed a better understanding of the failure zone on the shaft. The maximum equivalent stress magnitude obtained from the simulation was 632.08 [MPa] (which was lower than the fracture point) on the shaft under maximum PTO torque, however, it was concluded that the main reason for the failure was excessive shock torsional loading. This work contributes to further research into usage of numerical method based deformation simulation studies for the transmission elements used in agricultural tractors/machinery
Annual educational expenses of European urology residents and the role of sponsorship in urology training: a survey-based analysis.
Introduction
The aim of this article was to evaluate the personal monetary costs associated with the urology residency.
Material and methods
The European Society of Residents in Urology (ESRU) designed a 35-item survey and distributed it via email and social media to urology residents in Europe.Monthly net salary and educational expenses (general expenses, literature, congresses and courses) and opinions regarding sponsorship and expenditure were evaluated. Comparisons between different countries and salary cut-offs were made.
Results
A total of 211 European urology residents completed the survey from 21 European countries. The median interquartile range (IQR) age was 30 (18-42) years and 83.0% were male. A total of 69.6% receive less than €1500 net per month and 34.6% spent ≥€3000 on education in the previous 12 months. Sponsorships came mainly from the pharmaceutical industry (57.8%), but 56.4% of trainees thought that the ideal sponsor should be the hospital/urology department. Only 14.7% of respondents stated that their salary is sufficient to cover training expenses, and 69.2% agreed that training costs have an influence on family dynamics.
Conclusions
Personal expenses during training are high, are not sufficiently covered by the salary and impact family dynamics for a majority of residents in Europe. The majority thought that hospitals/national urology associations should contribute to the educational costs. For homogeneous opportunities across Europe, institutions should strive to increase sponsorship.post-print1388 K
