    Dollars and Sense: Does Economic Self-Interest or Emotional Attachment Better Explain Vote Choice?

    This paper seeks to understand voter choice using a dichotomous model differentiating between economic self-interest and emotional attachment. Using survey data from the American National Election Studies (ANES) database, this paper first utilizes a unique scaling technique and then a pseudo R-Square method to determine which independent variable, economic self-interest or emotional attachment (affect), contains more explanatory power in predicting voter choice. The findings support the hypothesis that economic self-interest contains the most explanatory power in predicting voter choice, though the degree of difference varies across elections

    Over 6,500 individuals died in 2012 waiting for an organ transplant in the United States. In the context of economics, this phenomenon is called a shortage, and in the world of the affected, this shortage is the difference between life and death. Ever since the passage of the National Organ Transplant Act (NOTA), which prohibits the sale of organs for human transplantation, economists, philosophers, public policy experts, religious leaders, and others have debated the ethical and effective standing of the law. Increasing the supply of organs by introducing monetary incentives to donors (suppliers) is a recent development in the field of economics. The concept has met resistance on ethical and empirical grounds. Regarding ethics, the use of monetary incentives has been criticized for potentially victimizing the poor, leading to the advancement of a black market, and removing the critical role of altruism within society. This paper does not undermine these valid concerns, and it recognizes the importance for the ethical debate. In fact, a small portion of this paper is devoted to these considerations. However, the majority of the paper focuses on empirical findings as they relate to the supply of organ donations

    This thesis studies Navy recruit training as a gendering process, and it examines female and male recruits' gendered experiences at Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, Illinois. Gender is a prominent social construct for individuals and organizations. Both individuals and organizations are gendered and create gender. The phrase, "gendering process," refers to an organization's production of gender. The primary research question is: Can the military socialization experience of Navy recruit training be understood as a gendering process, specifically as a process for producing masculinity? A psychometric inventory of gender role aftributes, the Bem Sex Role Inventory (B SRI), was used to measure the difference in starting and ending recruits' self assessment of femininity and masculinity. Results from the BSRI indicated that Navy recruit training is a gendering process for both female and male recruits. Structured interviews with RTC officer and enlisted personnel provided additional insight into the gendering nature of the military socialization experience of Navy recruit training. These results offer a powerful, analytical lens for viewing and assessing such personnel processes as attrition, retention, promotion, and occupational selection for women and men in the Navy.     Marine fish species can exhibit sex-specific differences in their biological traits. Not accounting for these characteristics in the stock assessment or management of a species can lead to misunderstanding its population dynamics and result in ineffective regulatory strategies. Summer Flounder Paralichthys dentatus, a flatfish that supports significant commercial and recreational fisheries along the northeastern U.S. shelf, expresses variation in several traits between the sexes, including growth and habitat preference. To further understand these patterns, 1,302 Summer Flounder were collected and sexed in 2016 and 2017 from fisheries-independent surveys conducted in Rhode Island state waters. Female flounder were more prevalent in shallow waters (15 m) from May through September. The probability of a collected flounder being female was evaluated with generalized linear models and covariates representing depth, temperature, month, year, and TL. Summer Flounder were more likely to be female at larger sizes, in shallower waters, and late in the season. When compared with landings data in the recreational fishery over the sampling period, the results suggest that nearly all flounder harvested in the sector were female. This work provides further evidence for and characterization of Summer Flounder sex-segregation and highlights, for management purposes, the importance of considering fine-scale spatial dynamics in addition to broader distribution patterns. The fitted model represents an effective first step toward understanding the implications of an aggregated fishing effort for disproportionate removals of male or female flounder and for exploring resulting consequences for regional spawning stock biomass and stock resiliency

    The Design, Content and Delivery of Relationship and Sexuality Education Programmes for People with Intellectual Disabilities: A Systematic Review of the International Evidence

    There is growing empirical evidence regarding the relationship and sexuality experiences and needs of children, young people and adults with intellectual disabilities. A total of twelve papers met the inclusion criteria regarding relationship and sexuality education (RSE) programmes specific to the needs of this population. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed and quality appraisal undertaken. The four themes identified were principles informing RSE programme development, design and content of RSE programmes, delivery of RSE programmes and evaluation of RSE programmes. The discussion presents areas that need to be addressed to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities, their families, carers and professionals are fully involved in the design and delivery of RSE programmes. Further research is required to identify the impact of the programmes and the sustained outcomes achieved. Recommendations are made regarding the activities required to enable the development of evidence-based and person-centred approaches to relationship and sexuality programmes

    Purpose of Review The aim of this paper was to review the recent international developments in health promotion and wellnessinitiatives targeting chronic disease prevention and management for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)targeting type 2 diabetes (T2D).Recent Findings There has been one diabetes prevention program (STOP) and two self-management T2D education programs(DESMOND-ID; OK diabetes) adapted for this population. All three programs have been adapted from other theoreticallyinformed and tested programs developed for the general population. Each program has employed co-design and co-productiontechniques with all stakeholders. The three programs all target the high-risk lifestyle factors that can lead to T2D and contribute topoor glycaemia control, and have undertaken randomized-feasibility studies, the results of which are promising.Summary This paper shows that any health promotion and wellness initiatives need to be tailored and reasonable adjustmentsmade in order to address this population’s cognitive impairments and communication difficulties

    Global sea-surface iodide observations, 1967-2018

    The marine iodine cycle has significant impacts on air quality and atmospheric chemistry. Specifically, the reaction of iodide with ozone in the top few micrometres of the surface ocean is an important sink for tropospheric ozone (a pollutant gas) and the dominant source of reactive iodine to the atmosphere. Sea surface iodide parameterisations are now being implemented in air quality models, but these are currently a major source of uncertainty. Relatively little observational data is available to estimate the global surface iodide concentrations, and this data has not hitherto been openly available in a collated, digital form. Here we present all available sea surface (<20 m depth) iodide observations. The dataset includes values digitised from published manuscripts, published and unpublished data supplied directly by the originators, and data obtained from repositories. It contains 1342 data points, and spans latitudes from 70°S to 68°N, representing all major basins. The data may be used to model sea surface iodide concentrations or as a reference for future observations
