First Measurement of the He3+He3-->He4+2p Cross Section down to the Lower Edge of the Solar Gamow Peak
We give the LUNA results on the cross section measurement of a key reaction
of the proton-proton chain strongly affecting the calculated neutrino
luminosity from the Sun: He3+He3-->He4+2p. Due to the cosmic ray suppression
provided by the Gran Sasso underground laboratory it has been possible to
measure the cross section down to the lower edge of the solar Gamow peak, i.e.
as low as 16.5 keV centre of mass energy. The data clearly show the cross
section increase due to the electron screening effect but they do not exhibit
any evidence for a narrow resonance suggested to explain the observed solar
neutrino flux.Comment: 5 pages, RevTeX, and 2 figures in PostScript Submitted for

Impact of a revised Mg(p,)Al reaction rate on the operation of the Mg-Al cycle
Proton captures on Mg isotopes play an important role in the Mg-Al cycle
active in stellar H-burning regions. In particular, low-energy nuclear
resonances in the Mg(p,)Al reaction affect the production
of radioactive Al as well as the resulting Mg/Al abundance ratio.
Reliable estimations of these quantities require precise measurements of the
strengths of low-energy resonances. Based on a new experimental study performed
at LUNA, we provide revised rates of the Mg(p,)Al
and the Mg(p,)Al reactions with corresponding
uncertainties. In the temperature range 50 to 150 MK, the new recommended rate
of the Al production is up to 5 times higher than previously
assumed. In addition, at T MK, the revised total reaction rate is a
factor of 2 higher. Note that this is the range of temperature at which the
Mg-Al cycle operates in an H-burning zone. The effects of this revision are
discussed. Due to the significantly larger Mg(p,)Al
rate, the estimated production of Al in H-burning regions is less
efficient than previously obtained. As a result, the new rates should imply a
smaller contribution from Wolf-Rayet stars to the galactic Al budget.
Similarly, we show that the AGB extra-mixing scenario does not appear able to
explain the most extreme values of Al/Al, i.e. , found
in some O-rich presolar grains. Finally, the substantial increase of the total
reaction rate makes the hypothesis of a self-pollution by massive AGBs a more
robust explanation for the Mg-Al anticorrelation observed in Globular-Cluster
stars
Ultra-sensitive in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy for nuclear astrophysics at LUNA
Ultra-sensitive in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy studies for nuclear
astrophysics are performed at the LUNA (Laboratory for Underground Nuclear
Astrophysics) 400 kV accelerator, deep underground in Italy's Gran Sasso
laboratory. By virtue of a specially constructed passive shield, the laboratory
gamma-ray background for E_\gamma < 3 MeV at LUNA has been reduced to levels
comparable to those experienced in dedicated offline underground gamma-counting
setups. The gamma-ray background induced by an incident alpha-beam has been
studied. The data are used to evaluate the feasibility of sensitive in-beam
experiments at LUNA and, by extension, at similar proposed facilities.Comment: accepted, Eur. Phys. J.

Solar fusion cross sections. II. The pp chain and CNO cycles
We summarize and critically evaluate the available data on nuclear fusion
cross sections important to energy generation in the Sun and other
hydrogen-burning stars and to solar neutrino production. Recommended values and
uncertainties are provided for key cross sections, and a recommended spectrum
is given for 8B solar neutrinos. We also discuss opportunities for further
increasing the precision of key rates, including new facilities, new
experimental techniques, and improvements in theory. This review, which
summarizes the conclusions of a workshop held at the Institute for Nuclear
Theory, Seattle, in January 2009, is intended as a 10-year update and

First direct measurement of the total cross section of 12C(alpha,gamma)16O
The total cross section of 12C(alpha,gamma)16O was measured for the first
time by a direct and ungated detection of the 16O recoils. This measurement in
inverse kinematics using the recoil mass separator ERNA in combination with a
windowless He gas target allowed to collect data with high precision in the
energy range E=1.9 to 4.9 MeV. The data represent new information for the
determination of the astrophysical S(E) factor.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication Eur.Phys.J. A

Endomicroscopic and transcriptomic analysis of impaired barrier function and malabsorption in environmental enteropathy
Introduction: Environmental enteropathy (EE) is associated with growth failure, micronutrient malabsorption and impaired responses to oral vaccines. We set out to define cellular mechanisms of impaired barrier function in EE and explore protective mechanisms. Methods: We studied 49 adults with environmental enteropathy in Lusaka, Zambia using confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE); histology, immunohistochemistry and mRNA sequencing of small intestinal biopsies; and correlated these with plasma lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and a zinc uptake test. Results: CLE images (median 134 for each study) showed virtually ubiquitous small intestinal damage. Epithelial defects, imaged by histology and claudin 4 immunostaining, were predominantly seen at the tips of villi and corresponded with leakage imaged in vivo by CLE. In multivariate analysis, circulating log-transformed LPS was correlated with cell shedding events (ÎČ = 0.83; P = 0.035) and with serum glucagon-like peptide-2 (ÎČ = -0.13; P = 0.007). Zinc uptake from a test dose of 25mg was attenuated in 30/47 (64%) individuals and in multivariate analysis was reduced by HIV, but positively correlated with GLP-2 (ÎČ = 2.72; P = 0.03). There was a U-shaped relationship between circulating LPS and villus surface area. Transcriptomic analysis identified 23 differentially expressed genes in severe enteropathy, including protective peptides and proteins. Conclusions: Confocal endomicroscopy, claudin 4 immunostaining and histology identify epithelial defects which are probably sites of bacterial translocation, in the presence of which increased epithelial surface area increases the burden of translocation. GLP 2 and other protective peptides may play an important role in mucosal protection in EE
The Cross Section of 3He(3He,2p)4He measured at Solar Energies
We report on the results of the \hethet\ experiment at the underground
accelerator facility LUNA (Gran Sasso). For the first time the lowest
projectile energies utilized for the cross section measurement correspond to
energies below the center of the solar Gamow peak (=22 keV). The
data provide no evidence for the existence of a hypothetical resonance in the
energy range investigated. Although no extrapolation is needed anymore (except
for energies at the low-energy tail of the Gamow peak), the data must be
corrected for the effects of electron screening, clearly observed the first
time for the \hethet\ reaction. The effects are however larger than expected
and not understood, leading presently to the largest uncertainty on the quoted
value for bare nuclides (=5.40 MeV b).Comment: 18 pages, 10 postscript figures, Calculations concerning hypothetical

Study of the 26Al(n,p)26Mg and 26Al(n,α)23Na reactions using the 27Al(p,p')27Al inelastic scattering reaction
26Al was the first cosmic radioactivity ever detected in the galaxy as well as one of the first extinct radioactivity observed in refractory phases of meteorites. Its nucleosynthesis in massive stars is still uncertain mainly due to the lack of nuclear information concerning the 26Al(n,p)26Mg and 26 Al(n,α)23Na reactions. We report on a single and coincidence measurement of the 27Al(p,p')27Al(p)26Mg and 27Al(p,p')27Al(α)23Na reactions performed at the Orsay TANDEM facility aiming at the spectroscopy study of 27Al above the neutron threshold. Fourteen states are observed for the first time within 350 keV above the 26Al+n threshold
