    Improving the precision of linear optics measurements based on turn-by-turn beam position monitor data after a pulsed excitation in lepton storage rings

    Beam optics control is of critical importance for machine performance and protection. Nowadays, turn-by-turn (TbT) beam position monitor (BPM) data are increasingly exploited as they allow for fast and simultaneous measurement of various optics quantities. Nevertheless, so far the best documented uncertainty of measured ß -functions is of about 10‰ rms. In this paper we compare the ß -functions of the ESRF storage ring measured from two different TbT techniques—the N-BPM and the Amplitude methods—with the ones inferred from a measurement of the orbit response matrix (ORM). We show how to improve the precision of TbT techniques by refining the Fourier transform of TbT data with properly chosen excitation amplitude. The precision of the N-BPM method is further improved by refining the phase advance measurement. This represents a step forward compared to standard TbT measurements. First experimental results showing the precision of ß -functions pushed down to 4‰ both in TbT and ORM techniques are reported and commented.Postprint (published version

    The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear e+e−e^+e^- collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. First beams would be available by 2035, marking the beginning of a broad CLIC physics programme spanning 25-30 years

    Discutindo a educação ambiental no cotidiano escolar: desenvolvimento de projetos na escola formação inicial e continuada de professores

    A presente pesquisa buscou discutir como a Educação Ambiental (EA) vem sendo trabalhada, no Ensino Fundamental e como os docentes desta escola compreendem e vem inserindo a EA no cotidiano escolar., em uma escola estadual do município de Tangará da Serra/MT, Brasil. Para tanto, realizou-se entrevistas com os professores que fazem parte de um projeto interdisciplinar de EA na escola pesquisada. Verificou-se que o projeto da escola não vem conseguindo alcançar os objetivos propostos por: desconhecimento do mesmo, pelos professores; formação deficiente dos professores, não entendimento da EA como processo de ensino-aprendizagem, falta de recursos didáticos, planejamento inadequado das atividades. A partir dessa constatação, procurou-se debater a impossibilidade de tratar do tema fora do trabalho interdisciplinar, bem como, e principalmente, a importñncia de um estudo mais aprofundado de EA, vinculando teoria e prática, tanto na formação docente, como em projetos escolares, a fim de fugir do tradicional vínculo “EA e ecologia, lixo e horta”.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació

    An Updated Global Optics Correction Scheme

    Currently, the linear global correction scheme implemented in the OMC software uses responses to the available correctors, computed as difference quotients by MAD-X requiring appropriate step-size. In order to improve robustness and speed, analytic formulas have been implemented. Further, the correction process itself has been modified to improve accuracy by reiteration. In this note, the used analytic formulas are presented and the results of the corrections calculated by means of the new code are compared to the currently used response generation scheme

    The chimney graft: a technique for preserving or rescuing aortic branch vessels in stent-graft sealing zones.

    PURPOSE: To report an alternative to the fenestrated stent-graft for preserving blood flow to side branches in the sealing zones of aortic stent-grafts. TECHNIQUE: A covered stent is deployed parallel to the main aortic stent-graft, protruding somewhat proximally, like a chimney, to preserve flow to a vital side branch covered by the aortic stent-graft. Use of a chimney graft makes it possible to use standard off-the-shelf stent-grafts to instantly treat lesions with inadequate fixation zones, providing an alternative to fenestrated stent-grafts in urgent cases, in aneurysms with challenging neck morphology, and for reconstituting an aortic side branch unintentionally compromised during endovascular repair. This technique has been used successfully in 10 patients, combining chimney grafts in the renal, superior mesenteric, left subclavian, left common carotid, and innominate arteries with stent-grafts in the abdominal (n=6) or thoracic (n=4) aorta. There has been no late chimney graft-related endoleak on imaging studies up to 8 months. CONCLUSION: The use of chimney grafts is feasible in the renal and superior mesenteric arteries, as well as in the supra-aortic branches, to facilitate stent-graft repair of thoracic or abdominal aortic lesions with inadequate fixation zones

    This note reports on the ïŹrst measurements of the beam waist displacements in the LHC using luminosity scans. The experiment consisted on applying an optics knob designed to displace the betatron waist and to measure the response of the luminosity, in order to ïŹnd its maximum. One knob per beam was designed beforehand to displace the vertical betatron waist of Interaction Point 1 (IP1). Two scans were performed for each knob. During the MD it was noticed that the knobs were largely aïŹ€ecting the tunes and therefore the second scan of each knob was performed correcting the tune between steps. After processing, the beam waist position was determined with better precision than that of K-modulation

    Manifestation of atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome caused by novel mutations in MCP

    Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a rare disease characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute renal failure. Mutations in genes encoding regulators of the alternative complement pathway (CFH, MCP, C3, CFI, CFB, THBD, and CFHR1-5) are connected with this disease. Polymorphisms (SNPs) in these genes might also influence the manifestation of aHUS. We have analyzed the genes of CFH, CFI, MCP, and C3 in a cohort of 10 unrelated Czech patients with clinically diagnosed familial aHUS. Surprisingly, 4 patients had mutations only in MCP, without mutations in any of the other genes that cause aHUS. Mutations, as yet unpublished, were widely distributed over the gene (SCR2 domain, signal peptide, and cytoplasmic region). The phenotype of the patients and their close relatives (14 individuals) was also investigated. Functional examination of MCP was also provided and proved lower expression on granulocytes in all mutations. Severity of disease varied, but onset was never earlier than 5 years of age. Penetrance of disease was 50% among carriers. We found that the severity and recurrence of the disease within families varied and might also be dependent on SNPs. Mutations in the MCP gene seems to be a common etiology of aHUS in Czech patients
