    Carbon sequestration potential and the multiple functions of Nordic grasslands

    Grasslands are important carbon sinks, but the underlying processes for their soil carbon sequestration potential are still not well understood, despite much attention given to this topic. In Europe, grasslands, especially semi-natural grasslands, are also important for promoting biodiversity. Moreover, recent global reports have highlighted the importance of biodiversity in supporting climate actions. In boreal and alpine regions in the Nordic countries, grasslands also play an important role in milk and meat production and food security. Certain grassland features and management practices may enhance their soil carbon sequestration potential. Semi-natural grasslands maintained by optimized livestock grazing are vital for aboveground biodiversity and show promise for belowground biodiversity and carbon sequestration potential. It is essential to assess the multiple functions of grasslands, particularly semi-natural grasslands, to facilitate the optimization of policy measures across policy areas. Climate and biodiversity policies should not counteract each other, as some do today. This essay addresses the multiple functions of grasslands and calls for more knowledge about carbon sequestration in Nordic grasslands. This will enable the management of these ecosystems to align with climate mitigation, maintain biodiversity, and satisfy the global need for increased food supply

    Foraging behaviour and plant selection in a herd of Icelandic goats

    The Icelandic goat is an indigenous breed, descendant of goats brought to Iceland by Nordic and Celtic settlers in the 9th century (Adalsteinsson 1981). The population is estimated to have been below 1000 individuals for centuries and critically threatened at least twice. Today about 900 goats are found all over the country, mostly in small groups with one large herd located in west Iceland. Very few studies have been conducted on the Icelandic goat. Previously, only one study (on population genetics) has been published (Baldursdottir et al. 2012).     The Behaviour of Stallions in a Semiferal Herd in Iceland: Time Budgets, Home Ranges, and Interactions

    A permanent herd of Icelandic horses with four stallions and their harems was studied for a total of 316 hours in a large pasture (215 ha) in May 2007 in Iceland. Interactions between stallions of different harems and other aspects of the horses' behaviour were studied. One stallion and nine horses were introduced into the pasture prior to the study to examine the reactions of the resident stallions to a newcomer. The stallions spent significantly less time grazing than other horses and were more vigilant. Home ranges overlapped, but harems never mixed. The stallions prevented interactions between members of different harems indirectly by herding. Generally, interactions between resident stallions were nonviolent. However, encounters with the introduced stallion were more aggressive and more frequent than between the other stallions. Here, we show that four harems can share the same enclosure peacefully. The social network seems to keep aggression at a low level both within the harems and the herd as a whole. We encourage horse owners to consider the feasibility of keeping their horses in large groups because of low aggression and because such a strategy gives the young horses good opportunities to develop normally, both physically and socially

    Generation of a novel fully human non-superagonistic anti-CD28 antibody with efficient and safe T-cell co-stimulation properties

    Antibody-based therapeutics represent an important class of biopharmaceuticals in cancer immunotherapy. CD3 bispecific T-cell engagers activate cytotoxic T-cells and have shown remarkable clinical outcomes against several hematological malignancies. The absence of a costimulatory signal through CD28 typically leads to insufficient T-cell activation and early exhaustion. The combination of CD3 and CD28 targeting products offers an attractive strategy to boost T-cell activity. However, the development of CD28-targeting therapies ceased after TeGenero's Phase 1 trial in 2006 evaluating a superagonistic anti-CD28 antibody (TGN1412) resulted in severe life-threatening side effects. Here, we describe the generation of a novel fully human anti-CD28 antibody termed "E1P2" using phage display technology. E1P2 bound to human and mouse CD28 as shown by flow cytometry on primary human and mouse T-cells. Epitope mapping revealed a conformational binding epitope for E1P2 close to the apex of CD28, similar to its natural ligand and unlike the lateral epitope of TGN1412. E1P2, in contrast to TGN1412, showed no signs of in vitro superagonistic properties on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) using different healthy donors. Importantly, an in vivo safety study in humanized NSG mice using E1P2, in direct comparison and contrast to TGN1412, did not cause cytokine release syndrome. In an in vitro activity assay using human PBMCs, the combination of E1P2 with CD3 bispecific antibodies enhanced tumor cell killing and T-cell proliferation. Collectively, these data demonstrate the therapeutic potential of E1P2 to improve the activity of T-cell receptor/CD3 activating constructs in targeted immunotherapeutic approaches against cancer or infectious diseases

    The triggering factors of the Móafellshyrna debris slide in northern Iceland: Intense precipitation, earthquake activity and thawing of mountain permafrost

    On the 20th September 2012, a large debris slide occurred in the Móafellshyrna Mountain in the Tröllaskagi peninsula, central north Iceland. Our work describes and discusses the relative importance of the three factors that may have contributed to the failure of the slope: intense precipitation, earthquake activity and thawing of ground ice. We use data from weather stations, seismometers, witness reports and field observations to examine these factors. The slide initiated after an unusually warm and dry summer followed by a month of heavy precipitation. Furthermore, the slide occurred after three seismic episodes, whose epicentres were located ~60km NNE of Móafellshyrna Mountain. The main source of material for the slide was ice-rich colluvium perched on a topographic bench. Blocks of ice-cemented colluvium slid and then broke off the frontal part of the talus slope, and the landslide also involved a component of debris slide, which mobilized around 312,000-480,000m(3) (as estimated from field data and aerial images of erosional morphologies). From our analysis we infer that intense precipitation and seismic activity prior to the slide are the main preparatory factors for the slide. The presence of ice-cemented blocks in the slide's deposits leads us to infer that deep thawing of ground ice was likely the final triggering factor. Ice-cemented blocks of debris have been observed in the deposits of two other recent landslides in northern Iceland, in the Torfufell Mountain and the Árnesfjall Mountain. This suggests that discontinuous mountain permafrost is degrading in Iceland, consistent with the decadal trend of increasing atmospheric temperature in Iceland. This study highlights a newly identified hazard in Iceland: landslides as a result of ground ice thaw. Knowledge of the detailed distribution of mountain permafrost in colluvium on the island is poorly constrained and should be a priority for future research in order to identify zones at risk from this hazard

    Forage quality of leaf fodder from the main woody species in Iceland and its potential use for livestock in the past and present

    Woody species played, and in many Nordic regions still play, a very important role in livestock feeding. However, forage quality (contents of macroelements and fibre fractions) of the leaves of common woody species is often inadequate. The aim of our study was to determine forage quality of leaves of Betula nana, Betula pubescens, Salix lanata, Salix phylicifolia and Sorbus aucuparia from Iceland and to compare it with the forage quality of the common native grass Deschampsia cespitosa and the introduced grass Alopecurus pratensis used by contemporary Icelandic farmers for forage production. Samples were collected at four localities in Iceland in late June 2013 and analysed for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), neutral and acid-detergent fibre and lignin concentration. Analyses were compared with the optimum range for cattle and sheep nutrition. The nutritive value of leaves of the Icelandic woody species was relatively high, and analysis showed their nutritive content satisfied both cattle and sheep nutrient requirements for N, P, K, Ca and Mg, but the relatively high content of indigestible lignin in all woody species could cause problems for livestock metabolism. Grasses were characterized by lower P, Ca and Mg, but substantially higher K concentrations, and higher N:P and K:(Mg + Ca) ratios. The forage quality of leaves of woody species increased in the order B. nana < B. pubescens < S. phylicifolia < S. Aucuparia < S. lanata. Results are discussed in relation to use of leaf fodder in the past, when woody species, particularly Salix spp., are likely to have played an important role in livestock feeding.Česká Zemědělská Univerzita v PrazePeer Reviewe

    Läsombudsrollen : En studie av fem pedagogers upplevelse av rollen som läsombud i förskolan

    Bakgrunden till denna studie är att förskoleverksamheten i Sverige har genomgått förändringar sedan läroplanens införande 1998. Tyngdpunkten ligger på barns lärande i högre grad än tidigare. Den utvecklingen ställer även andra krav på pedagogerna, som behöver fortbildning för att kunna följa målen. I Stockholms stad har läsombud utsetts på många förskolor, med uppdraget att utveckla arbetet med högläsning på sin förskola. Syftet med studien är att få kunskap om hur pedagogerna upplever uppdraget som läsombud och hur det fungerar i förhållande till arbetet på förskolan och arbetslagen. Metoden bestod av intervjuer med fem läsombud. Resultatet visar att dessa pedagoger tog uppdraget på grund av ett intresse för litteratur och högläsning i förskolan. Alla hade en positiv syn på uppdraget. Flera av pedagogerna hade fått fördjupade kunskaper och ökad medvetenhet om betydelsen av högläsning för barns språkutveckling och hur arbetet med det kan utföras. Samarbetet kring högläsning förskolan hade gått bra på den egna avdelningen, men inte på övriga avdelningar. Analysen gjordes med Erving Goffmans teori om roller som grund. Han menade att individen alltid spelar en roll i samspelet med andra människor. Genom olika uttryck påverkar individen de andra i syfte att styra hur de definierar situationen. Mina analys är att pedagogerna fick en större tro på sina egna uttryck genom uppdraget som läsombud och kunde därför påverka sitt team, det vill säga sitt arbetslag. Däremot var det svårare att påverka de andra teamen, eftersom varje team hålls samman genom det intima samarbetet. I ett större perspektiv är det tydligt att det ställs högre krav på förskolepedagoger än tidigare samtidigt som arbetsbelastningen har ökat
