Sinonasal cysts causing dyspnoea in two cattle – case report
Two cattle were referred to the University Clinic for Ruminants of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna. The main clinical sign in both cattle was dyspnoea with nasal stridor. Clinical examination of the upper respiratory tract was conducted, supplemented by ultrasonography, endoscopy and radiography. In addition, histological, bacteriological, and cytological examinations of different specimen materials were performed. The cow of Case 1 suffered from cystic nasal conchae, which was treated successfully by a laser technique. The cow of Case 2 also suffered from cystic nasal conchae. No surgery was performed in this case because the cyst opened spontaneously the day after diagnostic endoscopic procedures had been performed and the animal did not show any respiratory signs anymore. Pathological changes in the upper respiratory tract, such as nasal obstructions, should be included in the list of differential diagnoses in cattle showing respiratory distress
Concentrations of Fat, Protein, Lactose, Macro and Trace Minerals in Alpaca Colostrum and Milk at Different Lactation Stages
Although alpacas are not used for milk production a detailed knowledge on the composition of the colostrum and milk is needed for development of colostrum and milk replacers. The aim of the present study was to measure the concentration of fat, protein, lactose, and minerals in alpaca colostrum and milk. Colostrum samples were taken daily over four days after parturition from 20 multiparous alpaca mares. Milk samples were obtained monthly, during the first four months of lactation from 17 alpacas. Composition of colostrum and milk differed in numerous indicators. The concentrations of fat and lactose increased from day 1 (0.5%, 4.0%) to day 4 (5.3%, 5.0%), protein decreased from 20.4% on day 1 to 8.3% on day 4. In milk these three indicators did not change during the lactation. Minerals have been little studied in alpaca colostrum and milk in the past, many of which had the highest concentrations in colostrum immediately after birth. The results of the present study do not support that goat’s milk is the preferred substitute for feeding crias. This study contributes to the knowledge of the composition of alpaca colostrum and milk which can be of particular use in developing replacers
Intravenous infusions of glucose stimulate key lipogenic enzymes in adipose tissue of dairy cows in a dose-dependent manner
The present study was investigated whether increasing amounts of glucose
supply have a stimulatory effect on the mRNA abundance and activity of key
lipogenic enzymes in adipose tissue of midlactation dairy cows. Twelve
Holstein-Friesian dairy cows in midlactation were cannulated in the jugular
vein and infused with either a 40% glucose solution (n=6) or saline (n=6). For
glucose infusion cows, the infusion dose increased by 1.25%/d relative to the
initial net energy for lactation (NEL) requirement until a maximum dose
equating to a surplus of 30% NEL was reached on d 24. This maximum dose was
maintained until d 28 and stopped thereafter (between d 29-32). Cows in the
saline infusion group received an equivalent volume of 0.9% saline solution.
Samples of subcutaneous adipose tissue were taken on d 0, 8, 16, 24, and 32
when surplus glucose reached 0, 10, 20, and 30% of the NEL requirement,
respectively. The mRNA abundance of fatty acid synthase, cytoplasmic acetyl-
coenzyme A synthetase, cytoplasmic glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase-1, and
glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase showed linear treatment × dose interactions
with increasing mRNA abundance with increasing glucose dose. The increased
mRNA abundance was paralleled by a linear treatment × dose interaction for
fatty acid synthase and acetyl-coenzyme A synthetase enzymatic activities. The
mRNA abundance of ATP-citrate lyase showed a tendency for linear treatment ×
dose interaction with increasing mRNA abundance with increasing glucose dose.
The mRNA abundance of all tested enzymes, as well as the activities of fatty
acid synthase and acetyl-coenzyme A synthetase, correlated with plasma glucose
and serum insulin levels. In a multiple regression model, the predictive value
of insulin was dominant over that of glucose. In conclusion, gradual increases
in glucose supply upregulate key lipogenic enzymes in adipose tissue of
midlactating dairy cows with linear dose dependency. Insulin appears to be

O palácio das ilusões da tradução austeniana : “Orgulho e preconceito” no sistema literário
Nas décadas de 1930 e 1940, o mercado editorial brasileiro passou por sérias crises e mudanças, as quais acabaram contribuindo para o crescimento da tradução no país, transformando essas décadas na Era de Ouro da tradução. Esta pesquisa, vinculada ao projeto “Tradução e sistema literário – história da tradução no Brasil: a tradução dos clássicos e os escritores/tradutores”, objetiva investigar esse período e sua importância para a história da tradução no Brasil, juntamente com o lugar ocupado pela Editora José Olympio nesse contexto com relação aos clássicos literários estrangeiros traduzidos por autores brasileiros. Em um segundo momento, analisaremos as traduções de duas das obras de Jane Austen publicadas pela José Olympio na Coleção Fogos Cruzados, Orgulho e preconceito, traduzida por Lúcio Cardoso, em 1941, e Mansfield Park, traduzida por Rachel de Queiroz, em 1942. Será feito um estudo comparativo das obras com suas traduções mais recentes, a de Orgulho e preconceito por Alexandre Barbosa de Souza (Penguin Companhia, 2011), e a de Mansfield Park de Mariana Menezes Neumann (BestBolso, 2011). Com isso, pretendemos analisar a apresentação da obra traduzida em relação à sua economia estética e aos paratextos editoriais.During the 1930’s and 1940’s, the Brazilian publishing industry experienced many crisis and changes that, surprisingly as it may be, contributed to the development of the translation practice in Brazil, making of these decades the Golden Age of translation. This research project is part of a major project, “Translation and literary system – the history of translation in Brazil: translation of canons and the writers/translators”, and aimed to investigate this period of time and its importance to the Brazilian translation history. It also studied the role of the Editora José Olympio in this context, regarding the translations of literary classics by Brazilian writers. After that, we analyzed the translations of two of Jane Austen’s titles that have been published by the Editora José Olympio in the Fogos Cruzados Collection, Pride and Prejudice, translated by Lúcio Cardoso, 1941, and Mansfield Park, translated by Rachel de Queiroz, 1942. We conducted a comparative study between these titles and their most recent translations: Pride and Prejudice, translated by Alexandre Barbosa de Souza (Penguin Companhia, 2011), and Mansfield Park, translated by Mariana Menezes Neumann (BestBolso, 2011). By doing this, we aimed to analyze the way these texts were presented to public, regarding its aesthetics and paratexts
Tailoring the Curing Kinetics of NBR-Based Rubber Compounds for Additive Manufacturing of Rod Seals
The additive manufacturing (AM) of elastomeric parts based on high-viscosity reinforced rubbers has increasingly become a topic of scientific research in recent years. In addition to the viscosity, which is several decades higher during processing than the viscosities of thermoplastics, the flowability of the compound after the printing process and the necessary chemical crosslinking of the printed component play a decisive role in producing an elastic, high-quality, and geometrically stable part. After the first technological achievements using the so-called additive manufacturing of elastomers (AME) process, the knowledge gained has to be transferred first to concrete industrial parts. Therefore, in this study, the cure kinetics of a conventional rubber compound are tailored to match the specific requirements for scorch safety in the additive manufacturing of an industrial 2-component rod seal based on an acrylonitrile butadiene rubber O-ring in combination with a thermoplastic polyurethane as the base body. Experimental tests on a test rig for rod seals demonstrate the functionality of this additively manufactured 2-component rod seal

necessary for the students to ‘live’ within what one imitates. Teachers instruct
students and run the procedures as if they were ‘reality’. Some simulations, such as
in nursing education, require expensive equipment and sophisticated use of ICT.
Others can be set up as role-playing games with what one has at their disposal in
terms of facilities. The article compares three cases of simulation that were closely
examined in connection with a research project. The purpose was to find out if
the students experienced this as good quality. The students’ ability to immerse
themselves in the situation is of great importance for the benefit of the simulation.
Most students find that the situations closely resemble real life and keep them
engaged and alert. Teaching that explicitly tries to resemble reality is perceived as
very educational

Observation of Pulsed Gamma-rays Above 25 GeV from the Crab Pulsar with MAGIC
One fundamental question about pulsars concerns the mechanism of their pulsed
electromagnetic emission. Measuring the high-end region of a pulsar's spectrum
would shed light on this question. By developing a new electronic trigger, we
lowered the threshold of the Major Atmospheric gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov
(MAGIC) telescope to 25 GeV. In this configuration, we detected pulsed
gamma-rays from the Crab pulsar that were greater than 25 GeV, revealing a
relatively high cutoff energy in the phase-averaged spectrum. This indicates
that the emission occurs far out in the magnetosphere, hence excluding the
polar-cap scenario as a possible explanation of our measurement. The high
cutoff energy also challenges the slot-gap scenario.Comment: Slight modification of the analysis: Fitting a more general function
