    Narrative reflexivity in raced and gendered spaces

    This article explores the reflexive narrative positioning in which the author engages as a White woman, a secondary English teacher, and an educational researcher inquiring into the experiences of Latino/a teacher candidates in a Midwestern teacher education program. The author argues that critically reflexive narrative positioning enables her to embrace a stance toward equity and social justice for linguistically, racially, and ethnically diverse students in U.S. public schools. In this article, she shares three narrative vignettes through which she positions herself in relation to the Latino/a preservice teachers with whom she collaborated in the research project

    How Far Can Inclusion Take Us? Framing the Narrative for Transforming Our Community

    In this piece we explore terms, specifically the term “inclusion.” In what ways does the language we use in our campus discourse on “inclusion” set particular emphases and consequently shape our work? We suspect that many of us involved in these conversations and work long for explicit attention to issues of power. Overall, we argue that in any thoroughgoing work for “inclusion,” we need to look at our own power structures and that which is oppressive in our own place. We need to choose language that gets us there. We survey here several ways of framing a commitment to inclusion that consistently foregrounds an analysis of power. We explore terminology that includes the critical elements of self-reflection, examination of the role of power in our classrooms and on our campuses, and the ability to respond to bias and discrimination

    Educators Must Be Advocates: Advocating for Muslim Students

    As educators interested in supporting linguistically and culturally diverse learners, we have had to view our roles in different ways since the presidential campaign and the election of Trump. In this article, two teacher educators and two inservice ESL teachers in the U.S. reflect on our various experiences working with Muslim students and preparing teachers to support Muslim students in the current socio-political context. We discuss these experiences with the goal of suggesting some priorities in teacher education. Ultimately, to prepare teachers to be effective teachers for Muslim students requires them to go beyond being culturally responsive to becoming advocates and activists. This advocacy and activism necessitates a push against the cultural norms of Whiteness that dominate U.S. teacher education

    The K2K SciBar Detector

    A new near detector, SciBar, for the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation expe riment was installed to improve the measurement of neutrino energy spectrum and to study neutrino interactions in the energy region around 1 GeV. SciBar is a 'fully active' tracking detector with fine segmentation consisting of plastic scintillator bars. The detector was constructed in summer 2003 and is taking data since October 2003.     Experimental study of the atmospheric neutrino backgrounds for proton decay to positron and neutral pion searches in water Cherenkov detectors

    The atmospheric neutrino background for proton decay to positron and neutral pion in ring imaging water Cherenkov detectors is studied with an artificial accelerator neutrino beam for the first time. In total, about 314,000 neutrino events corresponding to about 10 megaton-years of atmospheric neutrino interactions were collected by a 1,000 ton water Cherenkov detector (KT). The KT charged-current single neutral pion production data are well reproduced by simulation programs of neutrino and secondary hadronic interactions used in the Super-Kamiokande (SK) proton decay search. The obtained proton to positron and neutral pion background rate by the KT data for SK from the atmospheric neutrinos whose energies are below 3 GeV is about two per megaton-year. This result is also relevant to possible future, megaton-scale water Cherenkov detectors.Comment: 13 pages, 16 figure

    Measurement of single charged pion production in the charged-current interactions of neutrinos in a 1.3 GeV wide band beam

    Single charged pion production in charged-current muon neutrino interactions with carbon is studied using data collected in the K2K long-baseline neutrino experiment. The mean energy of the incident muon neutrinos is 1.3 GeV. The data used in this analysis are mainly from a fully active scintillator detector, SciBar. The cross section for single π+\pi^{+} production in the resonance region (W<2W<2 GeV/c2c^2) relative to the charged-current quasi-elastic cross section is found to be 0.734 0.153+0.140^{+0.140}_{-0.153}. The energy-dependent cross section ratio is also measured. The results are consistent with a previous experiment and the prediction of our model.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 7 tables. Uses revtex4.     Meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of asthma in ethnically diverse North American populations.

    Asthma is a common disease with a complex risk architecture including both genetic and environmental factors. We performed a meta-analysis of North American genome-wide association studies of asthma in 5,416 individuals with asthma (cases) including individuals of European American, African American or African Caribbean, and Latino ancestry, with replication in an additional 12,649 individuals from the same ethnic groups. We identified five susceptibility loci. Four were at previously reported loci on 17q21, near IL1RL1, TSLP and IL33, but we report for the first time, to our knowledge, that these loci are associated with asthma risk in three ethnic groups. In addition, we identified a new asthma susceptibility locus at PYHIN1, with the association being specific to individuals of African descent (P = 3.9 × 10(-9)). These results suggest that some asthma susceptibility loci are robust to differences in ancestry when sufficiently large samples sizes are investigated, and that ancestry-specific associations also contribute to the complex genetic architecture of asthma
