Uterine sarcomas: clinical presentation and MRI features
Uterine sarcomas are a rare heterogeneous group of tumors
of mesenchymal origin, accounting for approximately 8%
of uterine malignancies. They comprise leiomyosarcoma,
endometrial stromal sarcoma, undifferentiated endometrial
sarcoma, and adenosarcoma. Compared with the more common
endometrial carcinomas, uterine sarcomas behave more
aggressively and are associated with a poorer prognosis. Due
to their distinct clinical and biological behavior, the International
Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics introduced a
new staging system for uterine sarcomas in 2009, categorizing
uterine carcinosarcoma as a variant of endometrial carcinoma,
rather than a pure sarcoma. Magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI) has a developing role in the assessment of these
malignancies. Features such as tumor localization, irregular
or nodular margins, necrosis, rapid growth, intense contrast
enhancement, and restriction at diffusion-weighted imaging
can suggest the diagnosis and help differentiate from more
common leiomyomas and endometrial carcinoma. MRI is
therefore extremely useful in preoperative detection and
staging and, consequently, in determination of appropriate
management. This pictorial review aims to discuss the clinical
features of uterine sarcomas, as well as their most common
appearances and distinct characteristics in MRI
Spatial mobility of U and Th in a U-enriched area (Central Portugal)
Uranium and thorium are toxic in different environments. The exploitation of uranium mines and associated mine drainage leaching towards streams, sediments, and soils cause relevant pollution. The U-mine areas present high concentrations of potentially toxic elements with several consequences to ecosystems and human health. Physicochemical and potentially toxic elements of mine dumps, stream sediments, and soils from the Canto Lagar uranium mine area (Central Portugal) were analyzed. Stream sediments, soils, and mine dumps show a large range in the concentration values of Fe, U, As, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Th, suggesting geological and mine contributions. Most of the selected potential toxic elements from sediments present a low to moderate contamination degree, except for As, W, and U, which vary between high and very high contamination index. The soils must not be used in agricultural or residential activities due to contamination in As and U. This abandoned mine represents an environmental risk due to the spatial mobility and dispersion of potentially toxic elements from the dumps to the sediments and soils, as well as by surface runoff and wind. This research was funded by FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., grant number FCT FRH/BPD/64921/2009 and Nano-MINENV PTDC/CTA-AMB/29259/2017
Acid stress response in campylobacter jejuni
Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Medicina VeterináriaConsidering that the acid tolerance is an important virulence factor of foodborne pathogens
and the expressive increasing of incidence of Campylobacter jejuni in recent years as
etiologic agent of human campylobacteriosis, this work aimed to evaluate the ability of C.
jejuni to survive under acid stress. Strains of different origins (reference, turkey isolates) and
tolerance to particular stresses (acid and temperature) were tested for survival in liquid
defined media with pH values of 5.0 and 7.0 adjusted with 1M HCl. Experimental conditions
were performed at 2 different temperatures: 4 ºC and 37 ºC. C. jejuni cells were found to be
very sensitive to acid stress at 37 ºC, whereas they were more resistant at 4 ºC. A strain effect
was observed at 37 ºC. Temperature of 37 ºC combined with acid stress allowed a rapid
decrease in the C. jejuni population, whereas low temperature (4ºC) considerably decreased
the effect of acid stress. The survival curves were either described by the Weibull or
traditional first-order model and goodness of fit of these models was investigated. Regression
coefficients (R2), root mean square error (RMSE) and correlation plots suggestted that
Weibull model produced a better fit to the data than the traditional model.
Fluorescence Ratio Imaging Microscopy (FRIM) was used to determine intracellular pH (pHi)
as an indicator of the physiological state of C. jejuni cells at the single cell level after
treatment with hydrochloride acid (1M HCl, pH 4.0) in liquid defined medium. For all the
tested strains pHi of healthy cells was found to be above 7.0. After exposure to HCl in liquid
medium an immediate decline in pHi to 5.5 (detection limit) was observed in the majority of
cells (75%) of one strain within 15 minutes. The FRIM results revealed that the
subpopulations with pHi>5.5 increased for this strain, especially subpopulations with
5.5<pHi<6.0 and 6.0<pHi<6.5 following 200 min. of exposure to HCl. This indicates that
some strains of C. jejuni may employ certain recovery strategies to extrude protons and to
increase pHi.RESUMO -
5.0 e 7.0). As condições experimentais foram efectuadas a duas temperaturas diferentes: 4 ºC
e 37 ºC.
A temperatura 37ºC
Placental site trophoblastic tumor: a case report and review of the literature
We present a case of a gravida 1 para 1 woman, who presented with an 11-
month history of amenorrhea after cesarean delivery. The patient was taking
birth control pills at the time of presentation. She was observed with a slight
elevation of serum β-hCG level, an enlarged heterogeneous uterus and
hematometra. A biopsy was performed, and the patient was diagnosed with
placental site trophoblastic tumor; the patient then underwent surgery.
Placental site trophoblastic tumor is the rarest form of gestational
trophoblastic disease, derived from intermediate trophoblast cells. It does not
have a pathognomonic appearance; therefore, correlation with medical
history, as well as results of laboratory tests and pathological analysis is
mandatory. It is a relatively chemoresistant tumor, posing considerable
therapeutic challenges; patients with localized disease are managed with
surgery and those with metastatic disease require additional chemotherapy.
Herein, we review the main features of this entity and top differential
diagnosis, as the rarity of this tumor is associated with imaging and
pathological pitfalls, reinforcing the need for further experience in this field
Chromium, in its higher oxidation state +6, is known as a strong mutagenic and
carcinogenic agent. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to a better understanding of the
mechanisms of toxicity of this element, exploring some aspects of the bioinorganic
chemistry of chromium.
Chapters 1 and 2 are a review of some aspects of the chemistry of chromium and
of some of its biological reductants, which may also act as potential ligands after
chromium reduction.
In Chapter, 3 the kinetics of Cr(V1) reduction processes by thiol containing
reductants is described. In particular, reduction reactions of Cr(V1) by glutathione,
cysteine or penicillamine were studied using several spectroscopic techniques. New data
treatment methods were applied to the reduction reaction by glutathione (considering it as
having a biphasic behaviour). Fast kinetic methods were utilised in the Cr(V1) reduction
reactions by cysteine and penicillamine. All these studies allowed the identification and
characterisation of thioester intermediates formed during reduction, as well as their
formation and decomposition kinetics. Results support new arguments in favour of the
attribution of a certain type of mechanism to those reactions. Raman spectroscopy was
applied to study structural aspects of the thioester intermediates, under physiological
conditions. This Chapter deals also with the identification and kinetics of formation of
final Cr(II1) products obtained from Cr(V1) reduction reactions with cysteine,
penicillamine and glutathione.
Chapter 4 describes the syntheses and the characterisation of Cr(II1) complexes
with cysteine, penicillamine and thiomalic acid. Hydrolysis kinetic results for the two
first complexes are discussed. Surprisingly, the hydrolysis rate constants are abnormally
high, even if considering the unusual labile behaviour of Cr(II1) complexes containing
Cr-S bonds. Their behaviour in an non-aqueous solution (DMF) was also studied.
Because of found contradictions in the attribution of absolute configurations to
Cr(II1) complexes with the simplest aminoacids this subject was reviewed in Chapter 5.
Some of this type complexes were prepared and a new compound with L-valine was
synthesised and its crystal structure determined by single-crystai X-Ray diffraction
methods. Mass spectrometry with ionisation by fast atom bombardment was applied for
the first time to these Cr(II1) complexes with a-aminocarboxilic acids, in order to solve
ambiguities in the interpretation of spectroscopic results (DC). Successful results allowed
the identification of five new structures, mainly dimeric-type.
In Chapter 6, results from the interaction of Cr(I1I) compounds with calf thymus
isolated nucleic are presented. Because of the unusual uptake of the compounds
containing Cr-S bonds, the results obtained open new perspectives into the interpretation
of the mechanisms and of the biological role of chromium compounds in +3 oxidation
state.
In Chapter 7, at last, experimental methods and conditions concerning the results
presented in the previous chapters are described in detail
This Final Report of Internship aims to present the case study developed within the scope of the Supervised Pedagogical Practice Course of the Master’s degree in Pre-School Education and Teaching in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education. The study has the conceptual framework of Gibson's Ecological Perception Theory and Laevers Experiential Approach and seeks to understand the interactions of children with the indoors play space, in a situation of free play, before and after the intervention in space.
The study was divided into 3 phases: (I) the first one materialized the observation of children's interactions with the indoors play space without intervention in space; (II), the second one was characterized by the observation of the children's interactions with the indoors play space with intervention, given the space reorganized by the Cooperating Teacher and (III) the third comprised the observation of the children's interactions with the indoors play space after the introduction of materials.
The study participants are four children (two girls and two boys) in the 3rd and 4th years of a School Center in Ílhavo, aged between 9 and 11 years. The techniques and instruments of data collection consisted of: initial semi-structured interviews; in naturalistic observation, participant and non-participant of children in recreational context; in photographic records and video-recordings, and also in conversations with the participants and the Guidance and Cooperating Teachers. The selected analysis technique was content analysis, using webQDA qualitative analysis software, version 3.0, and data coding in four analysis categories: Implication and Emotional Well-Being, Game Types, Social Behavior and Materials and Equipments.
The results indicate average levels of Implication and Well-Being, being slightly higher in females. The most frequent Social Behaviors in all phases of the study - without and with intervention - are Transition, Dialogue with Children and Observer. After the introduction of materials the Conflict has decreased considerably. As for the Game Type category, in Stage I, the Dramatic Game, R&T and Observer and Dialogue Behaviors stand out. In phase II comes the Physical Activity Game and the Constructive Game. In phase III the Dance is the most frequent game, being followed by the Constructive Game and the Game of Physical Activity. With regard to loose materials, pufs, building puzzles and the game of Checkers stand out
No grupo
mesmas. No entanto, os resultados demonstraram algumas diferenças tendencialmente
significativas entre grupos face ao grau de explicitação da ortografiaThe present investigation aims to study the impact of a Spelling Program, in which the
revision of spelling errors it’s made through a grid of correction with the spelling rules
layed out. The impact of said program is measured through the orthographic performance,
which in turn is measured through the frequency of spelling errors, and the level of
explicitation of the orthography, measured by the ability to recognize the correct spelling
and by the level of spelling rules explicitation.
In the near-experimental study, 100 students, from the 3.º grade, participated. They were
from five classes which were chosen to be either in the control group or in the
experimental group. In the evaluation moments, both in the pre as well as the post test, it
was conducted a dictation task, with 86 words that required knowledge of the contextual,
phonological and morphosyntactic spelling rules, and an individual interview, with 37
cards that required the students to recognize as well as explaining the correct writing and
the underlying rules.
Between the evaluation moments, the participants did nine sessions in which they had to
do a dictation task and its respective correction. In the experimental group it was
underlined, with colors, the spelling errors, then it was requested of the participants that
they correct their spelling errors using the correction grid, which had the spelling rules
written on it, coded by colors. In the control group the spelling errors were corrected, then
it was requested that the participants write them correctly three times.
The results didn’t show any significant differences between the two groups when it came
to the orthographic performance in the different rules, individually and in total. However,
the results did reveal some small, but significant, differences when it came to the level of
orthographic explicitation.

The inclusion of children with special needs (SN) poses great challenges to school and society. These challenges are related to little knowledge available, lack of strategies and intervention tools adapted to the specific needs of each child and also to communication troubles between distinct educational agents (family, health and education professionals). The communicational synchrony between all parties eases the intervention process, technically optimizing and adjusting it to critical learning periods of child development. In this article, we present an ongoing investigation project, which aims to favor effective communication and sharing between several educational agents as well as to elaborate didactical resources which, using a co-design method, can promote specific skills development relevant to the learning process of oral and written language in children with special needs, namely language difficulties in the phonological domain. The study is based on the promotion of an online space called ”compartilha” (being prototyped in PhD in Multimedia and education works of colleague Oksana Tymoshchuk)
The ultrasound and magnetic resonance in physiological and benign ovarian conditions
No entanto, a ressonância magnética
The ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging are essential to the diagnosis and appropriate treatment of benign disease in
reproductive women.
The aim of this work is to review the clinical, ultrasound and magnetic resonance findings of the ovarian physiology and benign
pathology with pathologic correlation.
The morphological ultrasound study complemented by Doppler image guides the diagnosis. However, the multiplanar ability and
better tissue differentiation of magnetic resonance enables better diagnostic accuracy, before the histologic confirmation.
The physiological aspects arising during the normal menstrual cycles under the hormone influence can be easily clinical and
ultrasound evaluated.
The simple cysts have thin walls and are regular, and the corpus luteum cysts have irregular walls, with a greater thickness and
hemorrhagic content, which gives high signal on T1-weighted images. The fat saturation is essential to differentiate the teratomas
from hemorrhagic and endometrial cysts.
On the Doppler study the absence of flow with the increase in size suggests torsion of the ovary.
The fibromas are solid tumors with low-signal intensity on T2-weighted images.
The correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment of the physiologic disorders and benign diseases of the ovary depend on the
adequate imaging evaluation
Positive youth development in Portugal : interactions with psychosocial variables
Copyright: © Gaspar de Matos M (2018). This Article is distributed under the terms of Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Objectives: Positive Youth Development - PYD perspective has highlighted the need to strengthen internal/external developmental assets in youth’s contexts. Literature suggests the importance for several psychosocial variables for the improvement of positive outcomes in youths, crucial for later in adulthood. The present study examined the associations of PYD and its dimensions with psychosocial variables.
Methods: Through an online survey, 2700 Portuguese youths (73.3% females), with a mean age of 21.3±2.79 years old were included.
Results: The results showed that, generally, there is a tendency for psychosocial variables, such as Resilience, Selfregulation, Anxiety, Perceived School Performance, Goals and Aspirations, and Life Events Scale, to have a significant impact on PYD Total score and its five dimensions: Confidence, Competence, Connection, Caring and Character (with exceptions in specific sub-dimension of scales).
Conclusion: Such findings reinforce the relevance of studying positive indicators for youth development and
draws addition to potential protective factors, such as the dynamic interdependence between psychosocial variables. More knowledge in this area can help health/education professionals and policy-makers to better plan interventions/policies, aiming an integral healthy perspective for youths, based on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work. Thus, different contexts are suggested to be taken into account and services would benefit from reinforcements in the environments where youths spend their time, namely family, school and community settings. The research leading to this publication was co-funded by different partial supports such as the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) (Grants - Margarida Gaspar de Matos: SFRH/ BSAB/135160/2017; Marta Reis: SFRH/BPD/110905/2015; Teresa Santos: SFRH/BD/82066/2011/J51280474607), WJCR/ISPA, Instituto Universitário; ISAMB, FML/University of Lisbon; FMH/ University of Lisbon.
