OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of some depressive symptoms in the elderly, to build up a score of depressive symptoms and to evaluate the association between depressive symptoms and demographic, socioeconomic and behavioral variables. METHODS:A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in individuals aged 60 and more living in the urban city area of Pelotas, Brazil. The sample was selected in multiple stages based on the city's census tracts. It was used a questionnaire comprising eight question commonly included in depression evaluation instruments and specific to the elderly. Analyses were carried out using multiple linear regressions following a hierarchical approach. RESULTS: A total of 583 subjects were interviewed and non-response rate was 4.7%. Each participant had on the average score of depressive symptoms was 3.4 (SD 2.1)Lack of willingness to carry out daily activities was the most frequent symptom (73.9%) reported. In the adjusted analysis according to the conceptual framework, the following groups had statistically higher averages (pOBJETIVOS: Determinar a freqüência de alguns sintomas depressivos em idosos, construir um escore de sintomas depressivos, e avaliar a associação entre a média de sintomas depressivos e variáveis demográficas, socioeconômicas e comportamentais. MÉTODOS: Delineamento transversal de base populacional incluindo indivíduos com 60 anos ou mais residentes na zona urbana da cidade de Pelotas, RS. A amostragem foi realizada em múltiplos estágios, tendo por base os setores censitários do município. Smokers, who generally present with lung damage, are more anxious than non-smokers and have an associated augmented risk of panic. Considering that lung damage signals specific neural pathways that are related to affective responses, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of pulmonary injury on anxiety and panic-like behaviours in animals exposed to cigarette smoke with and without tobacco. Male Wistar rats were divided into the following groups: a control group (CG); a regular cigarette group (RC); and a tobacco-free cigarette (TFC) group. Animals were exposed to twelve cigarettes per day for eight consecutive days. The animals were then exposed to an elevated T-maze and an open field. The RC and TFC groups presented increases in inflammatory cell inflow, antioxidant enzyme activity, and TBARS levels, and a decrease in the GSH/GSSG ratio was observed in the TFC group. Exposure to RC smoke reduced anxiety and panic-related behaviours. On the other hand, TFC induced anxiety and panic-related behaviours. Thus, our results contradict the concept that nicotine is solely accountable for shifted behavioural patterns caused by smoking, in that exposure to TFC smoke causes anxiety and panic-related behaviours.Cigarette smoke exposure is associated with anxiety states. Smokers are more anxious than non-smokers1, while cigarette smoking cessation is associated with increased levels of anxiety and stress, as the nicotine in cigarettes has been shown to have anxiolytic effects2. Moreover, smoking is also associated with an augmented risk of panic attacks, and quitting smoking could help reduce this risk3. Importantly, in a study conducted by Amaring and colleagues, it was reported that 72% of panic disorder patients declared that they were regular smokers at the onset of their disease4. Cigarette smoke is also one of the several agents and environmental factors that can trigger oxidative stress and pulmonary damage5. Cigarette smoke causes cellular recruitment, lipid peroxidation, production of inflammatory mediators, and oxidative stress6?11. For instance, studies in mice have shown that exposure to short-term cigarette smoke evokes an increase in inflammatory cell inflow and oxidative damage6,9. In general, exposure to pollutants induces pulmonary inflammation through the generation of oxidative stress12,13, defined as the imbalance in reactive oxygen species production, to the detriment of the antioxidant defence systems14. Importantly, exposure to ambient air particles not only induces pulmonary inflammation but also behavioural disorders both in humans and in mice15. Currently, the majority of anxiety studies associated with cigarette smoking have focused on the anxiolytic effects of nicotine2. However, it has been shown that lung damage can induce central nervous system responses by activating specific neuronal pathways16,17, which include those linked to affective responses, such as anxiety and panic18. This raises the question of whether the anxiety and panic-type behaviour associated with smoking might be related not only to the nicotine or to tobacco?s other constituents but also to lung damage

The question whether taxonomic descriptions naming new animal species without type specimen(s) deposited in collections should be accepted for publication by scientific journals and allowed by the Code has already been discussed in Zootaxa (Dubois & Nemésio 2007; Donegan 2008, 2009; Nemésio 2009a–b; Dubois 2009; Gentile & Snell 2009; Minelli 2009; Cianferoni & Bartolozzi 2016; Amorim et al. 2016). This question was again raised in a letter supported by 35 signatories published in the journal Nature (Pape et al. 2016) on 15 September 2016. On 25 September 2016, the following rebuttal (strictly limited to 300 words as per the editorial rules of Nature) was submitted to Nature, which on 18 October 2016 refused to publish it. As we think this problem is a very important one for zoological taxonomy, this text is published here exactly as submitted to Nature, followed by the list of the 493 taxonomists and collection-based researchers who signed it in the short time span from 20 September to 6 October 2016

Background!#!Recruiting asymptomatic participants with early disease stages into studies is challenging and only little is known about facilitators and barriers to screening and recruitment of study participants. Thus we assessed factors associated with screening rates in the MACUSTAR study, a multi-centre, low-interventional cohort study of early stages of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).!##!Methods!#!Screening rates per clinical site and per week were compiled and applicable recruitment factors were assigned to respective time periods. A generalized linear mixed-effects model including the most relevant recruitment factors identified via in-depth interviews with study personnel was fitted to the screening data. Only participants with intermediate AMD were considered.!##!Results!#!A total of 766 individual screenings within 87 weeks were available for analysis. The mean screening rate was 0.6 ± 0.9 screenings per week among all sites. The participation at investigator teleconferences (relative risk increase 1.466, 95% CI [1.018-2.112]), public holidays (relative risk decrease 0.466, 95% CI [0.367-0.591]) and reaching 80% of the site's recruitment target (relative risk decrease 0.699, 95% CI [0.367-0.591]) were associated with the number of screenings at an individual site level.!##!Conclusions!#!Careful planning of screening activities is necessary when recruiting early disease stages in multi-centre observational or low-interventional studies. Conducting teleconferences with local investigators can increase screening rates. When planning recruitment, seasonal and saturation effects at clinical site level need to be taken into account.!##!Trial registration!#!ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03349801 . The n_TOF facility: neutron beams for challenging future measurements at CERN

    No full text
The CERN n_TOF neutron beam facility is characterized by a very high instantaneous neutron flux, excellent TOF resolution at the 185 m long flight path (EAR-1), low intrinsic background and coverage of a wide range of neutron energies, from thermal to a few GeV. These characteristics provide a unique possibility to perform high-accuracy measurements of neutron-induced reaction cross-sections and angular distributions of interest for fundamental and applied Nuclear Physics. Since 2001, the n_TOF Collaboration has collected a wealth of high quality nuclear data relevant for nuclear astrophysics, nuclear reactor technology, nuclear medicine, etc. The overall efficiency of the experimental program and the range of possible measurements has been expanded with the construction of a second experimental area (EAR-2), located 20 m on the vertical of the n_TOF spallation target. This upgrade, which benefits from a neutron flux 30 times higher than in EAR-1, provides a substantial extension in measurement capabilities, opening the possibility to collect data on neutron cross-section of isotopes with short half-lives or available in very small amounts. This contribution will outline the main characteristics of the n_TOF facility, with special emphasis on the new experimental area. In particular, we will discuss the innovative features of the EAR-2 neutron beam that make possible to perform very challenging measurements on short-lived radioisotopes or sub-mg samples, out of reach up to now at other neutron facilities around the world. Finally, the future perspectives of the facility will be presented
