    Finance, Development, and Remittances: Extending the Scale of Accumulation in Migrant Labour Regimes

    The last decade has seen a heightened level of interest in the relationship between remittances and development, driven by the World Bank and other Bretton Woods Institutions. This has materialised in a global agenda to incorporate migrants and their households in commercial banking. The double significance of this policy rests in the financial incorporation of migrants and their households, and in the deepening entrenchment of the historical labour migration dynamic between sending communities and centres of capital. The central role of labour power in the advance of money forms the core of this analysis of a contemporary market-building strategy. This article presents a threefold critique of the global remittance agenda, based on (1) its transformative profit-driven development ideology, (2) its detachment of remittances from the political economy of migrant labour regimes, and (3) its dismissal of existing modes of remitting and uses of the funds

    A gill-associated Perkinsus sp. isolated from the softshell clam (Mya arenaria) is described as a new species, P. chesapeaki sp. nov. Examination of the parasite in seawater cultures revealed life cycle stages and zoosporulation processes similar to those described for other species of the genus Perkinsus. Prezoosporangia developed thickened cell walls upon contraction of the cytoplasm and development of a distinctive clear area between the cell wall and the protoplast. Successive bipartition of the protoplast led to the formation of hundred's of zoospores within mature sporangia. Zoospores were released into seawater through one or more discharge tubes. Ultrastructural studies revealed an oblong zoospore possessing two flagella that arose from a concave side located in the upper third of the zoospore body. The anterior flagellum possessed a unilateral array of hair-like structures. A large anterior vacuole and basolateral nucleus dominated the cytoplasm of the zoospore body. The presence of a rudimentary apical complex including on open-sided conoid, rhoptries, micronemes, and subpellicular microtubules were also discerned. Differences in zoospore morphology, and sequence analyses of two genes previously reported, support the designation of the gill-associated Perkinsus from the softshell clam as a new specie

    Classification model of spikes morphology using principal components analysis in drug-resistant epilepsy

    International audienceEpilepsy is one of the diseases that are more subject to consultation in neurological clinics. To help neurologists to accurately diagnose this disease, several technological tools have been developed. Electroencephalography (EEG) of scalp or deep is a signal acquisition tool from electrical discharges of the brain areas. These signals are often accompanied by transient events commonly called interictal paroxystic events (IPE) or spikes of short durations. Analysis of these IPE could help with the diagnosis of drug-resistant epilepsy. With this intention, we will first of all seek to detect IPE, by separating them from the basic activity of signal EEG. In this paper, we propose spike detection method based on Smoothed Nonlinear Energy Operator (SNEO) using adaptive threshold. Then we will implement a new approach using principal components analysis (PCA) before classification to separate the events detected according to their morphologies.
