Neuronal connectivity inference from spike trains using an empirical probabilistic causality measure
Treatment of cancer with cryochemotherapy
Cryosurgery employs freezing to destroy solid tumours. However, frozen cells can survive and cause cancer recurrence. Bleomycin, an anticancer drug with a huge intrinsic cytotoxicity is normally not very effective because it is nonpermeant. We report that freezing facilitates bleomycin penetration into cells making it toxic to cryosurgery surviving cells at concentrations that are non-toxic systemically
Right pulmonary artery occlusion by an acute dissecting aneurysm of the ascending aorta
We describe the case of a 76-year old female who presented with a Type A aortic dissection requiring repair with an interposition graft and aortic valve replacement. Post-operatively she had clinical features and computerised tomographic images suggestive of a pulmonary embolus and died 24 hours later. The extremely rare finding of intramural thrombus occluding the right pulmonary artery was seen at post mortem
The influence of semantic and phonological factors on syntactic decisions: An event-related brain potential study
During language production and comprehension, information about a word's syntactic properties is sometimes needed. While the decision about the grammatical gender of a word requires access to syntactic knowledge, it has also been hypothesized that semantic (i.e., biological gender) or phonological information (i.e., sound regularities) may influence this decision. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured while native speakers of German processed written words that were or were not semantically and/or phonologically marked for gender. Behavioral and ERP results showed that participants were faster in making a gender decision when words were semantically and/or phonologically gender marked than when this was not the case, although the phonological effects were less clear. In conclusion, our data provide evidence that even though participants performed a grammatical gender decision, this task can be influenced by semantic and phonological factors
The Schrdinger-Poisson equations as the large-N limit of the Newtonian N-body system: applications to the large scale dark matter dynamics
In this paper it is argued how the dynamics of the classical Newtonian N-body
system can be described in terms of the Schrdinger-Poisson equations
in the large limit. This result is based on the stochastic quantization
introduced by Nelson, and on the Calogero conjecture. According to the Calogero
conjecture, the emerging effective Planck constant is computed in terms of the
parameters of the N-body system as , where is the gravitational constant, and are the
number and the mass of the bodies, and is their average density. The
relevance of this result in the context of large scale structure formation is
discussed. In particular, this finding gives a further argument in support of
the validity of the Schrdinger method as numerical double of the
N-body simulations of dark matter dynamics at large cosmological scales.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Euro. Phys. J.
Building nonparametric -body force fields using Gaussian process regression
Constructing a classical potential suited to simulate a given atomic system
is a remarkably difficult task. This chapter presents a framework under which
this problem can be tackled, based on the Bayesian construction of
nonparametric force fields of a given order using Gaussian process (GP) priors.
The formalism of GP regression is first reviewed, particularly in relation to
its application in learning local atomic energies and forces. For accurate
regression it is fundamental to incorporate prior knowledge into the GP kernel
function. To this end, this chapter details how properties of smoothness,
invariance and interaction order of a force field can be encoded into
corresponding kernel properties. A range of kernels is then proposed,
possessing all the required properties and an adjustable parameter
governing the interaction order modelled. The order best suited to describe
a given system can be found automatically within the Bayesian framework by
maximisation of the marginal likelihood. The procedure is first tested on a toy
model of known interaction and later applied to two real materials described at
the DFT level of accuracy. The models automatically selected for the two
materials were found to be in agreement with physical intuition. More in
general, it was found that lower order (simpler) models should be chosen when
the data are not sufficient to resolve more complex interactions. Low GPs
can be further sped up by orders of magnitude by constructing the corresponding
tabulated force field, here named "MFF".Comment: 31 pages, 11 figures, book chapte
Retargeted adenoviruses for radiation-guided gene delivery
The combination of radiation with radiosensitizing gene delivery or oncolytic viruses promises to provide an advantage that could improve the therapeutic results for glioblastoma. X-rays can induce significant molecular changes in cancer cells. We isolated the GIRLRG peptide that binds to radiation-inducible 78 kDa glucose-regulated protein (GRP78), which is overexpressed on the plasma membranes of irradiated cancer cells and tumor-associated microvascular endothelial cells. The goal of our study was to improve tumor-specific adenovirus-mediated gene delivery by selectively targeting the adenovirus binding to this radiation-inducible protein. We employed an adenoviral fiber replacement approach to conduct a study of the targeting utility of GRP78-binding peptide. We have developed fiber-modified adenoviruses encoding the GRP78-binding peptide inserted into the fiber-fibritin. We have evaluated the reporter gene expression of fiber-modified adenoviruses in vitro using a panel of glioma cells and a human D54MG tumor xenograft model. The obtained results demonstrated that employment of the GRP78-binding peptide resulted in increased gene expression in irradiated tumors following infection with fiber-modified adenoviruses, compared with untreated tumor cells. These studies demonstrate the feasibility of adenoviral retargeting using the GRP78-binding peptide that selectively recognizes tumor cells responding to radiation treatment
The North Wyke Farm Platform: effect of temperate grassland farming systems on soil moisture contents, runoff and associated water quality dynamics
This is the final version of the article. Available from Wiley via the DOI in this record. The North Wyke Farm Platform was established as a United Kingdom national capability for collaborative research, training and knowledge exchange in agro-environmental sciences. Its remit is to research agricultural productivity and ecosystem responses to different management practices for beef and sheep production in lowland grasslands. A system based on permanent pasture was implemented on three 21-ha farmlets to obtain baseline data on hydrology, nutrient cycling and productivity for 2 years. Since then two farmlets have been modified by either (i) planned reseeding with grasses that have been bred for enhanced sugar content or deep-rooting traits or (ii) sowing grass and legume mixtures to reduce nitrogen fertilizer inputs. The quantities of nutrients that enter, cycle within and leave the farmlets were evaluated with data recorded from sensor technologies coupled with more traditional field study methods. We demonstrate the potential of the farm platform approach with a case study in which we investigate the effects of the weather, field topography and farm management activity on surface runoff and associated pollutant or nutrient loss from soil. We have the opportunity to do a full nutrient cycling analysis, taking account of nutrient transformations in soil, and flows to water and losses to air. The NWFP monitoring system is unique in both scale and scope for a managed land-based capability that brings together several technologies that allow the effect of temperate grassland farming systems on soil moisture levels, runoff and associated water quality dynamics to be studied in detail. HIGHLIGHTS: Can meat production systems be developed that are productive yet minimize losses to the environment? The data are from an intensively instrumented capability, which is globally unique and topical. We use sensing technologies and surveys to show the effect of pasture renewal on nutrient losses.Platforms provide evidence of the effect of meteorology, topography and farm activity on nutrient loss. The North Wyke Farm Platform is a UK National Capability supported by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC BB/J004308/1)
Illness perceptions and explanatory models of viral hepatitis B & C among immigrants and refugees: a narrative systematic review.

unless otherwise stated.BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B and C (HBV, HCV) infections are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Many countries with traditionally low prevalence (such as UK) are now planning interventions (screening, vaccination, and treatment) of high-risk immigrants from countries with high prevalence. This review aimed to synthesise the evidence on immigrants' knowledge of HBV and HCV that might influence the uptake of clinical interventions. The review was also used to inform the design and successful delivery of a randomised controlled trial of targeted screening and treatment. METHODS: Five databases (PubMed, CINHAL, SOCIOFILE, PsycINFO & Web of Science) were systematically searched, supplemented by reference tracking, searches of selected journals, and of relevant websites. We aimed to identify qualitative and quantitative studies that investigated knowledge of HBV and HCV among immigrants from high endemic areas to low endemic areas. Evidence, extracted according to a conceptual framework of Kleinman's explanatory model, was subjected to narrative synthesis. We adapted the PEN-3 model to categorise and analyse themes, and recommend strategies for interventions to influence help-seeking behaviour. RESULTS: We identified 51 publications including quantitative (n = 39), qualitative (n = 11), and mixed methods (n = 1) designs. Most of the quantitative studies included small samples and had heterogeneous methods and outcomes. The studies mainly concentrated on hepatitis B and ethnic groups of South East Asian immigrants residing in USA, Canada, and Australia. Many immigrants lacked adequate knowledge of aetiology, symptoms, transmission risk factors, prevention strategies, and treatment, of hepatitis HBV and HCV. Ethnicity, gender, better education, higher income, and English proficiency influenced variations in levels and forms of knowledge. CONCLUSION: Immigrants are vulnerable to HBV and HCV, and risk life-threatening complications from these infections because of poor knowledge and help-seeking behaviour. Primary studies in this area are extremely diverse and of variable quality precluding meta-analysis. Further research is needed outside North America and Australia
Fine Tuning in General Gauge Mediation
We study the fine-tuning problem in the context of general gauge mediation.
Numerical analyses toward for relaxing fine-tuning are presented. We analyse
the problem in typical three cases of the messenger scale, that is, GUT
( GeV), intermediate ( GeV), and relatively low energy
( GeV) scales. In each messenger scale, the parameter space reducing the
degree of tuning as around 10% is found. Certain ratios among gluino mass, wino
mass and soft scalar masses are favorable. It is shown that the favorable
region becomes narrow as the messenger scale becomes lower, and tachyonic
initial conditions of stop masses at the messenger scale are favored to relax
the fine-tuning problem for the relatively low energy messenger scale. Our
spectra would also be important from the viewpoint of the problem.Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures, comment adde
