Abandon Statistical Significance
We discuss problems the null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) paradigm
poses for replication and more broadly in the biomedical and social sciences as
well as how these problems remain unresolved by proposals involving modified
p-value thresholds, confidence intervals, and Bayes factors. We then discuss
our own proposal, which is to abandon statistical significance. We recommend
dropping the NHST paradigm--and the p-value thresholds intrinsic to it--as the
default statistical paradigm for research, publication, and discovery in the
biomedical and social sciences. Specifically, we propose that the p-value be
demoted from its threshold screening role and instead, treated continuously, be
considered along with currently subordinate factors (e.g., related prior
evidence, plausibility of mechanism, study design and data quality, real world
costs and benefits, novelty of finding, and other factors that vary by research
domain) as just one among many pieces of evidence. We have no desire to "ban"
p-values or other purely statistical measures. Rather, we believe that such
measures should not be thresholded and that, thresholded or not, they should
not take priority over the currently subordinate factors. We also argue that it
seldom makes sense to calibrate evidence as a function of p-values or other
purely statistical measures. We offer recommendations for how our proposal can
be implemented in the scientific publication process as well as in statistical
decision making more broadly
Bidirectional pathways between relational aggression and temperament from late childhood to adolescence
Relational aggression is linked to numerous adverse consequences. However, we know little about how temperament leads individuals to become perpetrators/victims of relational aggression, or how being a perpetrator/victim influences the development of temperament. We used longitudinal data from 674 Mexican-origin youth to examine relations between relational aggression and mother- and child-reported temperament from 5th grade (Mage=10.8; SD=0.60) through 11th grade (Mage=16.8; SD=0.50). Results show that: (a) high Negative Emotionality and low Effortful Control predicted increases in victimization; (b) low Effortful Control predicted increases in perpetration; (c) victims increased in Negative Emotionality and decreased in Effortful Control; and (d) perpetrators increased in Negative Emotionality and Surgency. Thus, temperament serves as both an antecedent to and a consequence of relational aggression
Resilience in moving water : effects of turbulence on the predatory impact of the lobate ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi

The definitive version was published in Limnology and Oceanography 63 (2018): 445â458, doi:10.1002/lno.10642.Despite its delicate morphology, the lobate ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi thrives in coastal ecosystems as an influential zooplankton predator. Coastal ecosystems are often characterized as energetic systems with high levels of natural turbulence in the water column. To understand how natural wind-driven turbulence affects the feeding ecology of M. leidyi, we used a combination of approaches to quantify how naturally and laboratory generated turbulence affects the behavior, feeding processes and feeding impact of M. leidyi. Experiments using laboratory generated turbulence demonstrated that turbulence can reduce M. leidyi feeding rates on copepods and Artemia nauplii byâ>â50%. However, detailed feeding data from the field, collected during highly variable surface conditions, showed that wind-driven turbulence did not affect the feeding rates or prey selection of M. leidyi. Additional laboratory experiments and field observations suggest that the feeding process of M. leidyi is resilient to wind-driven turbulence because M. leidyi shows a behavioral response to turbulence by moving deeper in the water column. Seeking refuge in deeper waters enables M. leidyi to maintain high feeding rates even under high turbulence conditions generated by wind driven mixing. As a result, M. leidyi exerted a consistently high predatory impact on prey populations during highly variable and often energetic wind-driven mixing conditions. This resilience adds to our understanding of how M. leidyi can thrive in a wide spectrum of environments around the world. Why Has Personality Psychology Played an Outsized Role in the Credibility Revolution?

But, in one way or another, personality psychologists have played an outsized role in the ongoing âcredibility revolutionâ in psychology. Not only have individual personality psychologists taken on visible roles in the movement, but our fieldâs practices and norms have now become models for other fields to emulate (or, for those who share Baumeisterâs (2016, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jesp.2016.02.003) skeptical view of the consequences of increasing rigor, a model for what to avoid). In this article we discuss some unique features of our field that may have placed us in an ideal position to be leaders in this movement. We do so from a subjective perspective, describing our impressions and opinions about possible explanations for personality psychologyâs disproportionate role in the credibility revolution. We also discuss some ways in which personality psychology remains less-than-optimal, and how we can address these flaws
Blue Carbon Storage Capacity of Temperate Eelgrass (Zostera marina) Meadows
Despite the importance of coastal ecosystems for the global carbon budgets, knowledge of their carbon storage capacity and the factors driving variability in storage capacity is still limited. Here we provide an estimate on the magnitude and variability of carbon stocks within a widely distributed marine foundation species throughout its distribution area in temperate Northern Hemisphere. We sampled 54 eelgrass (Zostera marina) meadows, spread across eight ocean margins and 36° of latitude, to determine abiotic and biotic factors influencing organic carbon (Corg) stocks in Zostera marina sediments. The Corg stocks (integrated over 25âcm depth) showed a large variability and ranged from 318 to 26,523 g C/m2 with an average of 2,721 g C/m2. The projected Corg stocks obtained by extrapolating over the top 1 m of sediment ranged between 23.1 and 351.7 Mg C/ha, which is in line with estimates for other seagrasses and other blue carbon ecosystems. Most of the variation in Corg stocks was explained by five environmental variables (sediment mud content, dry density and degree of sorting, and salinity and water depth), while plant attributes such as biomass and shoot density were less important to Corg stocks. Carbon isotopic signatures indicated that at most sites <50% of the sediment carbon is derived from seagrass, which is lower than reported previously for seagrass meadows. The high spatial carbon storage variability urges caution in extrapolating carbon storage capacity between geographical areas as well as within and between seagrass species
