Crossover effects in a discrete deposition model with Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling
We simulated a growth model in 1+1 dimensions in which particles are
aggregated according to the rules of ballistic deposition with probability p or
according to the rules of random deposition with surface relaxation (Family
model) with probability 1-p. For any p>0, this system is in the
Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, but it presents a slow crossover
from the Edwards-Wilkinson class (EW) for small p. From the scaling of the
growth velocity, the parameter p is connected to the coefficient of the
nonlinear term of the KPZ equation, lambda, giving lambda ~ p^gamma, with gamma
= 2.1 +- 0.2. Our numerical results confirm the interface width scaling in the
growth regime as W ~ lambda^beta t^beta, and the scaling of the saturation time
as tau ~ lambda^(-1) L^z, with the expected exponents beta =1/3 and z=3/2 and
strong corrections to scaling for small lambda. This picture is consistent with
a crossover time from EW to KPZ growth in the form t_c ~ lambda^(-4) ~ p^(-8),
in agreement with scaling theories and renormalization group analysis. Some
consequences of the slow crossover in this problem are discussed and may help

El propósito del presente trabajo es evaluar el aumento en el uso de colorantes naturales en la industria alimentaria
y la posibilidad de desarrollar nuevos medicamentos gracias a sus diversas propiedades biológicas. La presente
revisión aborda las principales actividades biológicas observadas en los carotenoides y las antocianinas y pone
énfasis en el amplio uso del extracto de achiote o bija (Bixa orellana L.) y de la curcumina (Curcuma longa) en estas
actividades.The aim of the present work is to evaluate the increase uses of natural colorants in the nourishing industry and in the
promising of new medicines due its several biological properties. In this review the main biological activities observed
in the carotenóids and the anthocyianins are boarded, with emphasis in the wide use of the urucum‘s extract from Bixa
orellana L.) and of curcumin from Curcuma longa in these activities
Measurement of single electron emission in two-phase xenon
We present the first measurements of the electroluminescence response to the
emission of single electrons in a two-phase noble gas detector. Single
ionization electrons generated in liquid xenon are detected in a thin gas layer
during the 31-day background run of the ZEPLIN-II experiment, a two-phase xenon
detector for WIMP dark matter searches. Both the pressure dependence and
magnitude of the single-electron response are in agreement with previous
measurements of electroluminescence yield in xenon. We discuss different
photoionization processes as possible cause for the sample of single electrons
studied in this work. This observation may have implications for the design and
operation of future large-scale two-phase systems.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Hydrogen-Helium Mixtures at High Pressure
The properties of hydrogen-helium mixtures at high pressure are crucial to
address important questions about the interior of Giant planets e.g. whether
Jupiter has a rocky core and did it emerge via core accretion? Using path
integral Monte Carlo simulations, we study the properties of these mixtures as
a function of temperature, density and composition. The equation of state is
calculated and compared to chemical models. We probe the accuracy of the ideal
mixing approximation commonly used in such models. Finally, we discuss the

Fusarium wilt incidence and common bean yield according to the preceding crop and the soil tillage system
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of preceding crops and tillage systems on the incidence of Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli) and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) yield. The cultivar BRS Valente was cultivated under center‑pivot irrigation in the winter seasons of 2003, 2004 and 2005, after several preceding crops established in the summer seasons. Preceding crops included the legumes Cajanus cajan (pigeon pea), Stylosanthes guianensis, and Crotalaria spectabilis; the grasses Pennisetum glaucum (millet), Sorghum bicolor (forage sorghum), Panicum maximum, and Urochloa brizantha; and a consortium of maize (Zea mays) and U. brizantha (Santa Fé system). Experiments followed a strip‑plot design, with four replicates. Fusarium wilt incidence was higher in the no‑tillage system. Higher disease incidences corresponded to lower bean yields in 2003 and 2004. Previous summer cropping with U. brizantha, U. brizantha + maize consortium, and millet showed the lowest disease incidence. Therefore, the choice of preceding crops must be taken into account for managing Fusarium wilt on irrigated common bean crops in the Brazilian Cerrado

Limits on spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross-sections from the first ZEPLIN-II data
The first underground data run of the ZEPLIN-II experiment has set a limit on
the nuclear recoil rate in the two-phase xenon detector for direct dark matter
searches. In this paper the results from this run are converted into the limits
on spin-dependent WIMP-proton and WIMP-neutron cross-sections. The minimum of
the curve for WIMP-neutron cross-section corresponds to 0.07 pb at a WIMP mass
