Inversion of stellar statistics equation for the Galactic Bulge
A method based on Lucy (1974, AJ 79, 745) iterative algorithm is developed to
invert the equation of stellar statistics for the Galactic bulge and is then
applied to the K-band star counts from the Two-Micron Galactic Survey in a
number of off-plane regions (10 deg.>|b|>2 deg., |l|<15 deg.).
The top end of the K-band luminosity function is derived and the morphology
of the stellar density function is fitted to triaxial ellipsoids, assuming a
non-variable luminosity function within the bulge. The results, which have
already been outlined by Lopez-Corredoira et al.(1997, MNRAS 292, L15), are
shown in this paper with a full explanation of the steps of the inversion: the
luminosity function shows a sharp decrease brighter than M_K=-8.0 mag when
compared with the disc population; the bulge fits triaxial ellipsoids with the
major axis in the Galactic plane at an angle with the line of sight to the
Galactic centre of 12 deg. in the first quadrant; the axial ratios are
1:0.54:0.33, and the distance of the Sun from the centre of the triaxial
ellipsoid is 7860 pc. The major-minor axial ratio of the ellipsoids is found
not to be constant. However, the interpretation of this is controversial. An
eccentricity of the true density-ellipsoid gradient and a population gradient
are two possible explanations.
The best fit for the stellar density, for 1300 pc<t<3000 pc, are calculated
for both cases, assuming an ellipsoidal distribution with constant axial
ratios, and when K_z is allowed to vary. From these, the total number of bulge
stars is ~ 3 10^{10} or ~ 4 10^{10}, respectively.Comment: 19 pages, 23 figures, accepted in MNRA
Impact of pump OSNR on noise figure for fiber-optical parametric amplifiers
Electrical measurements of the noise figure of a fiberoptical parametric amplifier are presented and compared with optical measurements. The transfer of pump noise by four-wave mixing was clearly demonstrated. A numerical model was developed to simulate the transfer of pump noise and validated by these measurements. Using this model, we determine, for practical systems, a minimum required pump optical signal-to-noise ratio of 65 dB
Impact of pump phase modulation on system performance of fibre-optical parametric amplifiers
Bit error rate induced in a parametric amplifier has been measured with a 10 Gbit=s line rate. It is shown experimentally that the phase modulation of the pump distorts the mark level of the channel and may cause system penalty. Different phase modulation schemes have been compared
Zero-dispersion Wavelength Mapping in Short Single-Mode Optical Fibers Using Parametric Amplification
We demonstrate a novel convenient nondestructive method based on optical
parametric amplification that allows retrieval of the zero-dispersion
wavelength map along a short optical fiber span with a high-spatial resolution.
The improved resolution relies on the high sensitivity to the local

Archives lacustres de l'évolution du climat et des activités humaines récentes dans les Pyrénées ariégeoises au cours de l'Holocène (étang majeur, vallée du Haut-Vicdessos, Pyrénées, France)
International audienceDans le cadre de l'Observatoire Hommes Milieux Haut-Vicdessos, des archives lacustres sont utilisées pour distin-guer les impacts de l'Homme ou du climat dans les Pyrénées (Ariège, 42°N). Associée à la cartographie acoustique de l'Étang Majeur, les analyses des sols et des sédi-ments lacustres mettent en évidence une sédimentation Tardiglaciaire riche en ti-tane, qui contraste avec une sédimentation Holocène de type dy résultant de l'érosion diffuse des tourbes présentes en amont du lac. L'enregistrement indique des périodes plus humides, datées en 1200, 1950, 3400 et 4550 cal BP et associées aux apports d'un canyon drainant les zones d'altitude. Depuis 1907, le niveau d'eau du lac est ré-gulé par deux barrages hydroélectriques. Il en résulte un marnage de 10 m affec-tant jusqu'à 37 % du bassin. Ceci a pour conséquences de remobiliser le matériel issu des berges, et d'augmenter la produc-tivité algaire et les taux d'accumulation
Tadalafil for the Treatment of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension A Double-Blind 52-Week Uncontrolled Extension Study
ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term safety and durability of efficacy of tadalafil for pulmonary arterial hypertension.BackgroundTadalafil is an oral phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor approved for PAH treatment. In the multicenter, placebo-controlled, randomized, 16-week PHIRST (Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension and Response to Tadalafil) study, tadalafil 40 mg improved exercise capacity and delayed clinical worsening.MethodsEligible patients from PHIRST received once-daily tadalafil 20 mg (T20 mg) or 40 mg (T40 mg) (n = 357) in the double-blind, 52-week, uncontrolled extension study (PHIRST-2); 293 patients completed PHIRST-2. Durability of efficacy was explored using the 6-min walk distance (6MWD) test. Clinical worsening and changes in World Health Organization functional class were evaluated.ResultsThe safety profile of tadalafil in PHIRST-2 was similar to that in PHIRST, with typical phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor adverse events. The 6MWDs achieved in PHIRST for the subset of patients receiving T20 mg and T40 mg in both PHIRST and PHIRST-2 (406 ± 67 m [n = 52] and 413 ± 81 m [n = 59] at PHIRST-2 enrollment, respectively) were maintained at PHIRST-2 completion (415 ± 80 m [n = 51] and 410 ± 78 m [n = 59], respectively). Numerically fewer patients who were on T40 mg in PHIRST and PHIRST-2 experienced World Health Organization functional class deterioration (6% [n = 5]) compared with those randomized to T20 mg (9% [n = 7]) across both studies. Post hoc analyses showed that background bosentan use and higher 6MWD at PHIRST baseline were associated with fewer clinical worsening events.ConclusionsLong-term treatment with tadalafil was well tolerated in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. In patients receiving either T20 mg or T40 mg, the improvements in 6MWD demonstrated in the 16-week PHIRST study appeared sustained for up to 52 additional weeks of treatment in PHIRST-2. HENA, heterogeneous network-based data set for Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia are the top cause for disabilities in later life and various types of experiments have been performed to understand the underlying mechanisms of the disease with the aim of coming up with potential drug targets. These experiments have been carried out by scientists working in different domains such as proteomics, molecular biology, clinical diagnostics and genomics. The results of such experiments are stored in the databases designed for collecting data of similar types. However, in order to get a systematic view of the disease from these independent but complementary data sets, it is necessary to combine them. In this study we describe a heterogeneous network-based data set for Alzheimer's disease (HENA). Additionally, we demonstrate the application of state-of-the-art graph convolutional networks, i.e. deep learning methods for the analysis of such large heterogeneous biological data sets. We expect HENA to allow scientists to explore and analyze their own results in the broader context of Alzheimer's disease research
Long-Term Safety, Tolerability and Survival in Patients with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Treated with Macitentan: Results from the SERAPHIN Open-Label Extension
Introduction: In SERAPHIN, a long-term, event-driven, double-blind randomised controlled trial in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), macitentan 10 mg significantly reduced the risk of morbidity/mortality compared with placebo. Its open-label extension study (SERAPHIN OL) further assessed long-term safety and tolerability of macitentan 10 mg in PAH patients. Methods: Patients in SERAPHIN who completed the double-blind treatment period or experienced a morbidity event during the study could enter SERAPHIN OL. Patients received macitentan 10 mg once daily, and safety and survival were assessed until end of treatment (+ 28 days). Two overlapping sets were analysed for safety: (1) all patients in SERAPHIN OL (OL safety set); (2) patients randomised to macitentan 10 mg in SERAPHIN (long-term safety/survival set). Survival was evaluated as an exploratory endpoint in the latter set. Results: Of 742 patients randomised in SERAPHIN, 550 (74.1%) entered SERAPHIN OL (OL safety set); 242 patients were randomised to macitentan 10 mg in SERAPHIN (long-term safety/survival set). Median (min, max) exposure to macitentan 10 mg was 40.1 (0.1, 130.5) months (2074.7 patient-years; OL safety set) and 54.7 (0.1, 141.3) months (1151.0 patient-years; long-term safety/survival set). Safety in both analysis sets was comparable to the known safety profile of macitentan. Kaplan-Meier survival estimates (95% CI) at 1, 5, 7 and 9 years were 95.0% (91.3, 97.1), 73.3% (66.6, 78.9), 62.6% (54.6, 69.6) and 52.7% (43.6, 61.0), respectively (long-term safety/survival set; median follow-up: 5.9 years). Conclusions: This analysis provides the longest follow-up for safety and survival published to date for any PAH therapy. The safety profile of macitentan 10 mg over this extensive treatment period was in line with that observed in SERAPHIN. As the majority of patients were receiving other PAH therapy at macitentan initiation, our study provides additional insight into the long-term safety of macitentan, including as part of combination therapy. Bridging the gap between low and high mass dwarf galaxies
While the dark matter content within the most massive giant and smallest
dwarf galaxies has been probed -- spanning a range of over one million in mass
-- an important observational gap remains for galaxies of intermediate mass.
This gap covers K band magnitudes of approximately -16 > M_K > -18 (for which
dwarf galaxies have B--K ~ 2). On the high mass side of the gap are dwarf
elliptical (dE) galaxies, that are dominated by stars in their inner regions.
While the low mass side includes dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies that are dark
matter-dominated and ultra compact dwarf (UCD) objects that are star-dominated.
Evolutionary pathways across the gap have been suggested but remain largely
untested because the `gap' galaxies are faint, making dynamical measurements
very challenging. With long exposures on the Keck telescope using the ESI
instrument we have succeeded in bridging this gap by measuring the dynamical
mass for five dwarf galaxies with M_K ~ -17.5 (M_B ~ --15.5). With the
exception of our brightest dwarf galaxy, they possess relatively flat velocity
dispersion profiles of around 20 km/s. By examining their 2D scaling relations
and 3D fundamental manifold, we found that the sizes and velocity dispersions
of these gap galaxies reveal continuous trends from dE to dSph galaxies. We
conclude that low-luminosity dwarf elliptical galaxies are dominated by stars,
not by dark matter, within their half light radii. This finding can be
understood if internal feedback processes are operating most efficiently in gap
galaxies, gravitationally heating the centrally-located dark matter to larger
radii. Whereas external environmental processes, which can strip away stars,
have a greater influence on dSph galaxies resulting in their higher dark matter
