In my life I have worked a lot on thePoincaré conjecture and related topics.Over the years, however, my mathematical interests were quite varied. I also worked on thesingularities of mappings, under the effect of a symmetry group, and I happened to stumble onthe Higgs potential, although I did not understand its meaning at the time. But there, I quitenaturally met the topic of symmetry breaking, something which fits perfecly with what I am aboutto tell you.In the early 1970s, I was a professor in the mathematics department of the Paris-OrsayUniversity; our neighbors and friends, the Williamses, an Anglo-Belgian couple, worked in thecondensed matter physics department of the same university. Claudine Williams was organizingmonthly lectures on general scientific topics for the members of her department. And in about1973, I gave there an introductory lecture on topology.As soon as I finished my lecture, two members of the audience approached me, saying that thekind of things I had talked about was exactly what they needed. The two were Gérard Toulouseand Maurice Kléman. I understood from them that topology was discovered to help understandthe defects of ordered media. At that time, only two groups in the world had started to work onthis topic. One in Paris, more precisely in Orsay and Bures-sur-Yvette, with Toulouse, Klémanand Louis Michel from IHES, and the other in Moscow, with Volovik and Mineev who worked inthe team of Dzialoshinsky. And after some years, Misha started coming to Bures-Orsay, we met and we becamefriends.This was how things were in those old days. But, about thirty years later, the situation changeddrastically. With the work of Ed Witten, Barry Simon (who, incidentally, had been my student in atopology course at Harvard, in the early 1960s) and others, that led to topological quantum fieldtheory, a topic that fascinates me, and with other things like that, topology became a big hot topicin physics.But let us go back to the early 1970s. Gérard and I started talking a lot together, he taughtme physics and I taught him topology. And since I was having some problems with my ownmathematical work at the time, I welcomed a temporary change of horizon. Gérard was acharming personality, full of enthusiasm, inspiration, and clever ideas. He was also very goodat communicating these things. Of the many physicists I have met in my life, he was the one withwhom I could interact best.Concerning our work together, it was already known at the time that defects of orderedmedia were connected with the homotopy groups of the manifold of internal states, a space thatsomehow encodes symmetry breaking. In particular, the existence of defect lines was connectedwith the fundamental group of that manifold of internal states, and similarly, the defect pointshad to do with the second homotopy group.But Gérard and I looked at the dynamics of defects, and we discovered that the non-commutativity of that fundamental group, when it exists, prevented the defect lines from cross-ing [1]. Many physicists outside the topic of condensed matter became interested in our result,partly I think, because non-commutativity is so fundamental in quantum theory.Actually, the famous Russian field theorist Sasha Polyakov suggested that we look at whathappens to our little theory when one tries to extend it to higher dimensions; that was clearlyoutside of condensed matter physics.And there we found a beautiful surprise. The totality of homotopy groups, when endowedwith the Whitehead product, becomes a supersymmetric algebra. And we found out that the non-commutativity of the Whitehead product is the obstruction to the crossing of higher-dimensionaldefects [2]. So, somehow, supersymmetry is now involved. Gérard told me that he had neverexperienced such joy at a discovery.I will introduce here a little anecdote, which I find amusing. In the early 1970s, JeanDieudonné, the famous French mathematician, wrote a book on the mathematics of Bourbaki.And when it came to topology, he stated that this topic had no connection with physics. Whenhe published a second edition a few years later, he corrected that statement, and he also quotedGérard, myself, and Louis Michel.Our third and last work together, a piece done by us two, together with Yves Pomeau, BernardDerrida and Yves Bouligand, concerned the following puzzling issue. Bouligand, who wasa biologist but also a distinguished physicist, had discovered what are now called Bouligandrings in his study of biological tissues. These were defect rings, existing in a situation whenthe potential obstruction to crossing was living at the center of the fundamental group of themanifold of internal states, and which nevertheless stayed hooked together, refusing to cross.But non-commutativity was not the explanation.What we discovered was that the explanation for this paradoxical situation was the emergenceof a new player in the game, the third homotopy group of the manifold of internal states. Thedeep reason for the appearance of this totally new ingredient, was that we were now in thecontext of textures, where long-range effects also become important [3]. And I think that themathematics involved here is not unrelated to the still conjectural magnetic monopoles of t’Hooftand Polyakov.Valentin Poénaru 127We have now reached the late 1970s. I had managed to overcome the difficulties which werebogging me down earlier, so I went back to my mathematical research. Actually, I had another,shorter incursion into physics, when I helped Geoff Chew from Berkeley to develop a topologicalbootstrap theory.However, those years of collaboration with Gérard Toulouse and the others were a very excitingand interesting period in my scientific career. Gérard was a very important figure in my scientificlife.A short appendix on Bouligand ringsYves Bouligand developed an experimental technique for studying the cholesteric order. Hefound defect lines, called now the Bouligand rings, which stayed linked, although the homotopi-cal obstruction to their crossing lived in the center of the fundamental group of the manifold ofinternal states. Non-commutativity was therefore not what kept them linked.We are actually here in the presence of textures, which are ordered media where the orderparameter is defined everywhere, and the region where it is not constant plays the role of defects.It is now a completely new actor, the third homotopy group of the manifold of internal states,which is the obstruction to crossing. Après desétudes secondaires au Lycée Descartes de Tours il est reçu en 1959 au concours d’entrée del’Ecole Normale Supérieure de la rue d’Ulm. Il y obtient l’Agrégation de Physique, en 1963. A lasortie de son service militaire, il est recruté en 1965 comme chercheur CNRS au Laboratoire dePhysique des Solides de l’Université d’Orsay. C’est là qu’il soutient sa Thèse de Doctorat d’Etat en1968 sous la direction d’André Blandin avant de partir pour un séjour postdoctoral de deux ans àl’Université de Californie de San Diego dans le groupe de Walter Kohn à La Jolla. En 1976, il quittel’Université d’Orsay pour rejoindre le Département de Physique de l’Ecole Normale Supérieureauquel il restera attaché jusqu’à sa retraite. Avec Edouard Brézin, alors directeur du Départe-ment, et Pierre Lallemand, il y fonde le Laboratoire de Physique Statistique de l’Ecole NormaleSupérieure. Au cours des années 80, il s’absente de l’ENS à deux reprises : il passe une année(1985–1986) à l’Ecole Supérieure de Physique et Chimie Industrielles de la Ville de Paris puisune autre année (1987–1988) à l’Institut pour les études avancées de l’Université Hébraïque deJérusalem.Grand théoricien de la Physique de la Matière Condensée et de la Physique Statistique, GérardToulouse a fait des contributions majeures dans de nombreux domaines. Après ses premierstravaux sur les raies du fluor [1], il travaille à la fin des années 60 sur les impuretés dans les métauxet sur l’effet Kondo [2,3], sur les gaz de Fermi [4] et la surface des métaux [5]. Au début des années70 il s’intéresse aux transitions de phase [6-8], ce qui l’amène à publier, avec Pierre Pfeuty, unlivre sur le Groupe de Renormalisation [9,10]. Puis dans une série de travaux commencée avecMaurice Kleman, Louis Michel, puis Valentin Poénaru, il s’attaque à la classification des défautstopologiquement stables des milieux ordonnés [11-17]. Il s’agit d’une des toutes premièresapplications de la topologie en physique de la matière condensée.Les ponts qu’il établit entre la Physique et d’autres disciplines ne se limitent pas aux mathé-matiques, comme en témoignent son incursion en sociologie avec Julien Bok [18] ou une quin-zaine d’années plus tard son livre avec Hanoch Gutfreund à la frontière entre physique et biologie[19].A la fin des années 70, Gérard Toulouse comprend très tôt l’importance du problème desverres de spins. Il introduit le concept de frustration [20] pour décrire l’impossibilité d’un sys-tème à satisfaire simultanément toutes ses interactions et consacre plusieurs travaux, en par-ticulier avec Jean Vannimenus, à l’étude sur les systèmes frustrés [20-24]. Il poursuit ses re-cherches sur les verres de spins en étudiant des modèles de champ moyen [25,26]. S’ensuiventplusieurs articles majeurs comme ceux sur la coexistence d’un ordre verre de spins et d’unordre ferromagnétique avec Marc Gabay [27-30], sur l’interprétation physique de la nature dela phase verre de spins telle que prédite par la brisure de symétrie des répliques avec Marc Mé-zard, Giorgio Parisi, Nicolas Sourlas et Miguel Virasoro [31-33], sur la structure ultramétrique desétats [34] et avec Scott Kirkpatrick, sur le lien entre verres de spins et problèmes d’optimisation[35].Parallèlement à son intérêt pour les problèmes de verres de spins, Gérard Toulouse publie audébut des années 80, en particulier avec Rammal Rammal disparu en 1991, plusieurs travaux surles fractals [36-38] qui se prolongent par une étude de réseaux supra-conducteurs [39] et de l’effetHall quantique [40]. A la suite de ces collaborations, Gérard Toulouse est à l’origine de la créationd’une médaille, à la mémoire de Rammal, qui était attribuée chaque année à un scientifique dubassin méditerranéen.Au milieu des années 80 Gérard Toulouse fait partie, parmi les physiciens, des précurseursà comprendre l’importance du modèle de Hopfield et de la théorie des verres de spins dansl’étude des réseaux de neurones. Il publie plusieurs travaux consacrés à la capacité des réseauxBernard Derrida et al. 255de neurones formels d’abord avec Jean-Pierre Changeux et Stanislas Dehaene, puis avec desmembres du Département de Physique de l’ENS et des chercheurs de l’ESPCI [41-46].Avec sa curiosité scientifique toujours en éveil et ses contacts avec de nombreux scientifiquesde très haut niveau à travers le monde Gérard Toulouse a beaucoup contribué au développementet au rayonnement du Département de Physique de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure : organisationde groupes de travail communs avec des chercheurs appartenant à des laboratoires différents,attraction de professeurs invités prestigieux (B. Halperin, J. Hopfield, S. Kirkpatrick, J. Langer,T. Lubensky, D. Thouless), obtention des tous premiers contrats européens. Il a grandementcontribué à rendre ce département un pôle d’excellence en Physique Statistique et à y encourageret à y inspirer bon nombre de jeunes théoriciens. Il a encouragé de nombreux jeunes physiciensà leur début et c’est grâce à lui que plusieurs d’entre eux sont devenus des noms mondialementconnus de la théorie des systèmes désordonnés et des verres de spins. Plus largement, plusieursdes rencontres qu’il a organisées aux Houches, en particulier l’école qu’il y a dirigée avec RogerMaynard pendant l’été 1978 sur la matière mal condensée [47], ont contribué à l’épanouissementde tout un domaine de la physique théorique moderne.A côté de son activité de physicien, Gérard Toulouse a exercé de nombreuses responsabilités,en particulier, il s’est beaucoup investi sur des questions d’éthique, et de droits de l’homme.Il participa activement à l’émergence du mouvement éthique autour des grands enjeux dessciences et des technologies, incluant la place et la responsabilité des chercheurs dans la société,la défense des lanceurs d’alerte et la gouvernance des institutions scientifiques. Il devint membredu COMETS, comité d’éthique pour les sciences du CNRS, dès sa création en 1994 et intégrades instances de réflexion délibérative au sein de différentes organisations : membre du Comitéd’éthique conjoint INRA — CIRAD, membre du Comité de pilotage de l’Espace éthique del’ENS (Paris), vice-président puis président du Comité des sciences exactes et naturelles de laCommission nationale française pour l’UNESCO, membre du Comité permanent Science etEthique de l’Alliance européenne des académies ALLEA.Ces dernières décennies, ces champs de réflexion devinrent dominants dans ses préoccupa-tions et publications, auxquels s’ajoutaient la défense des droits humains et de la paix en Europe,au sein notamment du mouvement Pugwash France (vice-présidence de l’Association française),de la Commission des droits de l’homme de la Société Française de Physique (membre fondateur)ou du Comité français de liaison de la Décennie des Nations-Unies pour l’éducation aux droitsde l’homme [48-51].Il continua d’y œuvrer par la philanthropie à travers la fondation familiale La Ferthé qu’il co-fonda avec ses frères et sœurs en 1996, en particulier via la distribution d’un prix « Savoir etCourage ».Gérard Toulouse a été honoré de nombreuses distinctions :• 1969 : Médaille de bronze du CNRS• 1976 : Prix Langevin (Société française de physique)• 1979 : Prix Triossi (Académie des Sciences)• 1983 : Prix Holweck (Soc. française de physique et British Institute of Physics)• 1989 : Grand Prix du CEA (décerné par l’Académie des sciences)• 1990 - : membre correspondant de l’Académie des Sciences (Paris)• 1990 : Conférencier E.Montroll à Leiden• 1996 - : membre étranger de l’Académie Américaine des Arts et des Sciences (Boston)• 1999 : Médaille Cecil Powell de la Société de physique européenne (EPS)• 2005 - : membre honoraire de l’Académie de Palestine pour la Science et la Technologie(PALAST)Il est décédé à Paris le 6 Août 2023.256 Bernard Derrida et al.Références[1] Y.
