Stagnation point reverse flow combustor for a combustion system
A combustor assembly includes a combustor vessel having a wall, a proximate end defining an opening and a closed distal end opposite said proximate end. A manifold is carried by the proximate end. The manifold defines a combustion products exit. The combustion products exit being axially aligned with a portion of the closed distal end. A plurality of combustible reactant ports is carried by the manifold for directing combustible reactants into the combustion vessel from the region of the proximate end towards the closed distal end
Transport of North African dust from the Bodélé depression to the Amazon Basin: a case study
Through long-range transport of dust, the North-African desert supplies essential minerals to the Amazon rain forest. Since North African dust reaches South America mostly during the Northern Hemisphere winter, the dust sources active during winter are the main contributors to the forest. Given that the Bodélé depression area in southwestern Chad is the main winter dust source, a close link is expected between the Bodélé emission patterns and volumes and the mineral supply flux to the Amazon. <br><br> Until now, the particular link between the Bodélé and the Amazon forest was based on sparse satellite measurements and modeling studies. In this study, we combine a detailed analysis of space-borne and ground data with reanalysis model data and surface measurements taken in the central Amazon during the Amazonian Aerosol Characterization Experiment (AMAZE-08) in order to explore the validity and the nature of the proposed link between the Bodélé depression and the Amazon forest. <br><br> This case study follows the dust events of 11–16 and 18–27 February 2008, from the emission in the Bodélé over West Africa (most likely with contribution from other dust sources in the region) the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, to the observed effects above the Amazon canopy about 10 days after the emission. The dust was lifted by surface winds stronger than 14 m s<sup>−1</sup>, usually starting early in the morning. The lofted dust, mixed with biomass burning aerosols over Nigeria, was transported over the Atlantic Ocean, and arrived over the South American continent. The top of the aerosol layer reached above 3 km, and the bottom merged with the boundary layer. The arrival of the dusty air parcel over the Amazon forest increased the average concentration of aerosol crustal elements by an order of magnitude
Triage of the Gaia DR3 astrometric orbits. II. A census of white dwarfs
The third data release of Gaia was the first to include orbital solutions
assuming non-single stars. Here, we apply the astrometric triage technique of
Shahaf et al. to identify binary star systems with companions that are not
single main-sequence stars. Gaia's synthetic photometry of these binaries is
used to distinguish between systems likely to have white-dwarf companions and
those that may be hierarchical triples. The study uncovered a population of
nearly 3200 binaries, characterised by orbital separations on the order of an
astronomical unit, in which the faint astrometric companion is probably a white
dwarf. This sample increases the number of orbitally solved binary systems of
this type by about two orders of magnitude. Remarkably, over 110 of these
systems exhibit significant ultraviolet excess flux, confirming this
classification and, in some cases, indicating their relatively young cooling
ages. We show that the sample is not currently represented in synthetic binary
populations, and is not easily reproduced by available binary population
synthesis codes. Therefore, it challenges current binary evolution models,
offering a unique opportunity to gain insights into the processes governing

The SED Machine: a dedicated transient IFU spectrograph
The Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) Machine is an Integral Field Unit (IFU) spectrograph designed specifically to classify transients. It is comprised of two subsystems. A lenselet based IFU, with a 26" × 26" Field of View (FoV) and ∼ 0.75" spaxels feeds a constant resolution (R∼100) triple-prism. The dispersed rays are than imaged onto an off-the-shelf CCD detector. The second subsystem, the Rainbow Camera (RC), is a 4-band seeing-limited imager with a 12.5' × 12.5' FoV around the IFU that will allow real time spectrophotometric calibrations with a ∼ 5% accuracy. Data from both subsystems will be processed in real time using a dedicated reduction pipeline. The SED Machine will be mounted on the Palomar 60-inch robotic telescope (P60), covers a wavelength range of 370 − 920nm at high throughput and will classify transients from on-going and future surveys at a high rate. This will provide good statistics for common types of transients, and a better ability to discover and study rare and exotic ones. We present the science cases, optical design, and data reduction strategy of the SED Machine. The SED machine is currently being constructed at the Calofornia Institute of Technology, and will be comissioned on the spring of 2013
ULTRAVIOLET SPECTROSCOPY OF TYPE IIB SUPERNOVAE: DIVERSITY AND THE IMPACT OF CIRCUMSTELLAR MATERIAL
We present new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) multi-epoch ultraviolet (UV) spectra of the bright Type IIb SN 2013df, and undertake a comprehensive analysis of the set of four SNe IIb for which HST UV spectra are available (SN 1993J, SN 2001ig, SN 2011dh, and SN 2013df). We find strong diversity in both continuum levels and line features among these objects. We use radiative-transfer models that fit the optical part of the spectrum well, and find that in three of these four events we see a UV continuum flux excess, apparently unaffected by line absorption. We hypothesize that this emission originates above the photosphere, and is related to interaction with circumstellar material (CSM) located in close proximity to the SN progenitor. In contrast, the spectra of SN 2001ig are well fit by single-temperature models, display weak continuum and strong reverse-fluorescence features, and are similar to spectra of radioactive 56Ni-dominated SNe Ia. A comparison of the early shock-cooling components in the observed light curves with the UV continuum levels which we assume trace the strength of CSM interaction suggests that events with slower cooling have stronger CSM emission. The radio emission from events having a prominent UV excess is perhaps consistent with slower blast-wave velocities, as expected if the explosion shock was slowed down by the CSM that is also responsible for the strong UV, but this connection is currently speculative as it is based on only a few events
Rectal Carriage of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-Producing Gram-Negative Bacilli in Community Settings in Madagascar
BACKGROUND: Extended-spectrum ß-lactamase-producing Enterobacteria (ESBL-PE) emerged at the end of the 1980s, causing nosocomial outbreaks and/or hyperendemic situations in hospitals and long-term care facilities. In recent years, community-acquired infections due to ESBL-PE have spread worldwide, especially across developing countries including Madagascar. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of intestinal carriage of ESBL-PE in the community of Antananarivo. METHODS: Non-hospitalized patients were recruited in three health centers in different socio economic settings. Fresh stool collected were immediately plated on Drigalski agar containing 3 mg/liter of ceftriaxone. Gram-negative bacilli species were identified and ESBL production was tested by a double disk diffusion (cefotaxime and ceftazidime +/- clavulanate) assay. Characterization of ESBLs were perfomed by PCR and direct sequencing . Molecular epidemiology was analysed by Rep-PCR and ERIC-PCR. RESULTS: 484 patients were screened (sex ratio = 1.03, median age 28 years). 53 ESBL-PE were isolated from 49 patients (carrier rate 10.1%). The isolates included Escherichia coli (31), Klebsiella pneumoniae (14), Enterobacter cloacae (3), Citrobacter freundii (3), Kluyvera spp. (1) and Pantoae sp.(1). In multivariate analysis, only the socioeconomic status of the head of household was independently associated with ESBL-PE carriage, poverty being the predominant risk factor. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of carriage of ESBL in the community of Antananarivo is one of the highest reported worldwide. This alarming spread of resistance genes should be stopped urgently by improving hygiene and streamlining the distribution and consumption of antibiotics
Estimation of the atmospheric flux of nutrients and trace metals to the Eastern Tropical North Atlantic Ocean
Atmospheric deposition contributes potentially significant amounts of the nutrients iron, nitrogen and phosphorus (via mineral dust and anthropogenic aerosols) to the oligotrophic tropical North Atlantic Ocean. Transport pathways, deposition processes and source strengths contributing to this atmospheric flux are all highly variable in space and time. Atmospheric sampling was conducted during 28 research cruises through the Eastern Tropical North Atlantic (ETNA) over a 12 year period and a substantial dataset of measured concentrations of nutrients and trace metals in aerosol and rainfall over the region was acquired. This database was used to quantify (on a spatial- and seasonal-basis) the atmospheric input of ammonium, nitrate, soluble phosphorus and soluble and total iron, aluminium and manganese to the ETNA. The magnitude of atmospheric input varies strongly across the region, with high rainfall rates associated with the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone contributing to high wet deposition fluxes in the south, particularly for soluble species. Dry deposition fluxes of species associated with mineral dust exhibited strong seasonality, with highest fluxes associated with winter-time low-level transport of Saharan dust. Overall (wet plus dry) atmospheric inputs of soluble and total trace metals were used to estimate their soluble fractions. These also varied with season and were generally lower in the dry north than in the wet south. The ratio of ammonium plus nitrate to soluble iron in deposition to the ETNA was lower than the N:Fe requirement for algal growth in all cases, indicating the importance of the atmosphere as a source of excess iron
iPTF16fnl: a faint and fast tidal disruption event in an E+A galaxy
We present ground-based and \textit{Swift} observations of iPTF16fnl, a
likely tidal disruption event (TDE) discovered by the intermediate Palomar
Transient Factory (iPTF) survey at 66.6 Mpc. The lightcurve of the object
peaked at absolute mag. The maximum bolometric luminosity (from
optical and UV) was erg/s, an
order of magnitude fainter than any other optical TDE discovered so far. The
luminosity in the first 60 days is consistent with an exponential decay, with
, where =~57631.0 (MJD) and
days. The X-ray shows a marginal detection at erg/s (\textit{Swift} X-ray Telescope). No radio counterpart was
detected down to 3, providing upper limits for monochromatic radio
luminosity of erg/s and erg/s (VLA, 6.1 and 22 GHz). The blackbody temperature, obtained from
combined \textit{Swift} UV and optical photometry, shows a constant value of
19,000 K. The transient spectrum at peak is characterized by broad He II and
H emission lines, with an FWHM of about 14,000 km/s and 10,000 km/s
respectively. He I lines are also detected at 5875 and 6678.
The spectrum of the host is dominated by strong Balmer absorption lines, which
are consistent with a post-starburst (E+A) galaxy with an age of 650 Myr
and solar metallicity. The characteristics of iPTF16fnl make it an outlier on
both luminosity and decay timescales, as compared to other optically selected
TDEs. The discovery of such a faint optical event suggests a higher rate of
tidal disruptions, as low luminosity events may have gone unnoticed in previous

Age-related biological differences in children's and adolescents' very rare tumors
Very rare tumors (VRTs) in pediatric age represent many different diseases. They present an annual incidence < 2/1000,000 and correspond to about 11% of all cancers in patients aged 0–14 years. They can be roughly divided into two groups: one including tumors that are also rare in adults, and the other group includes adult-type tumors rarely encountered in children and adolescents. Although there is an obvious gap in knowledge regarding oncogenesis in pediatric cancers, there is some evidence of the involvement of various signalling pathways in the development of tumors in children and adolescents and sometimes in young adults. In addition, despite the rarity of these neoplasms, several attempts have been made to disclose the underlying mechanisms. More effort and resources have urgently to be devoted to deepening current knowledge and integrating new findings into the therapeutic approach, which nowadays relies on the treatment modalities used in adult oncology.
