Contains fulltext : 171302.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to examine differences in perceived impact of cancer (IOC) between adolescents and young adults (AYAs; 18-35 years at cancer diagnosis), adults (36-64 years) and elderly (65-84 years) with a history of (non-)Hodgkin lymphoma. Furthermore, to investigate the association of socio-demographic, clinical and psychological characteristics with IOC; and the association between IOC and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among AYAs only. METHODS: This study is part of a population-based PROFILES registry survey among lymphoma patients diagnosed between 1999 and 2009. Patients (n = 1.281) were invited to complete the IOCv1 and EORTC-QLQ-C30 questionnaires. Response rate was 67 % (n = 861). RESULTS: AYA lymphoma survivors scored higher on the positive IOC summary scale, compared to adult and elderly patients (p < 0.001), while no significant differences were observed for negative IOC. Among AYAs, females, survivors with a partner, and survivors with elevated psychological distress levels scored significantly higher on the negative IOC summary scale. The negative IOC summary scale was negatively associated with all EORTC QLQ-C30 functioning scales (beta ranging from -0.39 to -0.063; p < 0.05). The positive IOC summary scale was negatively associated with the EORTC QLQ-C30 subscale 'Emotional functioning' (beta = -0.24; p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: AYA, adult and elderly with a history of (non-)Hodgkin lymphoma experienced different types of IOC in terms of positive and negative aspects. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: Although AYAs experience a more positive IOC compared to older survivors, some AYAs experience more negative IOC and may require developmentally appropriate interventions to address their specific concerns

Insights into Cross-Kingdom Plant Pathogenic Bacteria

    Get PDF
Plant and human pathogens have evolved disease factors to successfully exploit their respective hosts. Phytopathogens utilize specific determinants that help to breach reinforced cell walls and manipulate plant physiology to facilitate the disease process, while human pathogens use determinants for exploiting mammalian physiology and overcoming highly developed adaptive immune responses. Emerging research, however, has highlighted the ability of seemingly dedicated human pathogens to cause plant disease, and specialized plant pathogens to cause human disease. Such microbes represent interesting systems for studying the evolution of cross-kingdom pathogenicity, and the benefits and tradeoffs of exploiting multiple hosts with drastically different morphologies and physiologies. This review will explore cross-kingdom pathogenicity, where plants and humans are common hosts. We illustrate that while cross-kingdom pathogenicity appears to be maintained, the directionality of host association (plant to human, or human to plant) is difficult to determine. Cross-kingdom human pathogens, and their potential plant reservoirs, have important implications for the emergence of infectious diseases

J/ψ polarization in p+p collisions at s=200 GeV in STAR

AbstractWe report on a polarization measurement of inclusive J/ψ mesons in the di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity at 2<pT<6 GeV/c in p+p collisions at s=200 GeV. Data were taken with the STAR detector at RHIC. The J/ψ polarization measurement should help to distinguish between different models of the J/ψ production mechanism since they predict different pT dependences of the J/ψ polarization. In this analysis, J/ψ polarization is studied in the helicity frame. The polarization parameter λθ measured at RHIC becomes smaller towards high pT, indicating more longitudinal J/ψ polarization as pT increases. The result is compared with predictions of presently available models

A Germline Variant at 8q24 Contributes to Familial Clustering of Prostate Cancer in Men of African Ancestry

    Get PDF
Although men of African ancestry have a high risk of prostate cancer (PCa), no genes or mutations have been identified that contribute to familial clustering of PCa in this population. We investigated whether the African ancestry–specific PCa risk variant at 8q24, rs72725854, is enriched in men with a PCa family history in 9052 cases, 143 cases from high-risk families, and 8595 controls of African ancestry. We found the risk allele to be significantly associated with earlier age at diagnosis, more aggressive disease, and enriched in men with a PCa family history (32% of high-risk familial cases carried the variant vs 23% of cases without a family history and 12% of controls). For cases with two or more first-degree relatives with PCa who had at least one family member diagnosed at age <60 yr, the odds ratios for TA heterozygotes and TT homozygotes were 3.92 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.13–7.22) and 33.41 (95% CI = 10.86–102.84), respectively. Among men with a PCa family history, the absolute risk by age 60 yr reached 21% (95% CI = 17–25%) for TA heterozygotes and 38% (95% CI = 13–65%) for TT homozygotes. We estimate that in men of African ancestry, rs72725854 accounts for 32% of the total familial risk explained by all known PCa risk variants. Patient summary: We found that rs72725854, an African ancestry–specific risk variant, is more common in men with a family history of prostate cancer and in those diagnosed with prostate cancer at younger ages. Men of African ancestry may benefit from the knowledge of their carrier status for this genetic risk variant to guide decisions about prostate cancer screening. © 2020 The AuthorsThe African ancestry–specific prostate cancer risk variant at 8q24, rs72725854, is enriched in men diagnosed at younger ages and men with a prostate cancer family history. Carriers of this risk allele would benefit from regular and earlier prostate cancer screening

Dielectron Azimuthal Anisotropy At Mid-rapidity In Au+au Collisions At Snn =200 Gev

We report on the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy (v2) of dielectrons (e+e- pairs) at mid-rapidity from sNN=200 GeV Au+Au collisions with the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), presented as a function of transverse momentum (pT) for different invariant-mass regions. In the mass region Mee<1.1 GeV/c2 the dielectron v2 measurements are found to be consistent with expectations from π0,η,ω, and φ decay contributions. In the mass region 1.1<Mee<2.9GeV/c2, the measured dielectron v2 is consistent, within experimental uncertainties, with that from the cc¯ contributions.906Adams, J., (2005) Nucl. Phys. J/ψ Production At Low Pt In Au+au And Cu+cu Collisions At Snn =200 Gev With The Star Detector

The J/ψ pT spectrum and nuclear modification factor (RAA) are reported for pT<5GeV/c and |y|<1 from 0% to 60% central Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sNN=200GeV at STAR. A significant suppression of pT-integrated J/ψ production is observed in central Au+Au events. The Cu+Cu data are consistent with no suppression, although the precision is limited by the available statistics. RAA in Au+Au collisions exhibits a strong suppression at low transverse momentum and gradually increases with pT. The data are compared to high-pT STAR results and previously published BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider results. Comparing with model calculations, it is found that the invariant yields at low pT are significantly above hydrodynamic flow predictions but are consistent with models that include color screening and regeneration. © 2014 American Physical Society.902CNRS/IN2P3; NSF; Arthritis National Research Foundation; NRF-2012004024; ANRF; Arthritis National Research FoundationMatsui, T., Satz, H., (1986) Phys Lett. Beam-energy Dependence Of Charge Separation Along The Magnetic Field In Au+au Collisions At Rhic

Local parity-odd domains are theorized to form inside a quark-gluon plasma which has been produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The local parity-odd domains manifest themselves as charge separation along the magnetic field axis via the chiral magnetic effect. The experimental observation of charge separation has previously been reported for heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energies. In this Letter, we present the results of the beam-energy dependence of the charge correlations in Au+Au collisions at midrapidity for center-of-mass energies of 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV from the STAR experiment. After background subtraction, the signal gradually reduces with decreased beam energy and tends to vanish by 7.7 GeV. This implies the dominance of hadronic interactions over partonic ones at lower collision energies. © 2014 American Physical Society.1135DOE; National Research Foundation; CNRS/IN2P3; NSF; National Research Foundation; NRF-2012004024; National Research FoundationVafa, C., Witten, E., (1984) Phys. Conservation tillage with animal draught in Zambia

    No full text
The Golden Valley Agricultural Research Trust (GART) investigates the possibilities for the introduction of conservation tillage to small farmers in the (semi-arid) central and southern provinces of Zambia. Major emphasis is given to the implementation of conservation tillage by using animal drawn rippers, as an alternative to conventional mouldboard ploughing. This simple technology has already proven (by on-station research and on-farm adaptive trials) to be quite successful in being able to establish a good crop stand while requiring little energy. It may provide the best opportunity to reduce the negative effects of drought, and thus improve food security and protect the agricultural base from further degradation. Crops are maize, cotton, sunflower and soybean. Results of this work will be presented with regard to operational (time and energy consumption) and agronomical aspects (soil structure, water availability, crop establishment, yields and weeds). Various tillage systems are being assessed and compared: shallow ripping by oxen, deep (15-25 cm) ripping by oxen, ploughing using a common ox-drawn mouldboard plough, ridging after deep ripping (all by oxen), manual hoe or stick planting, manual preparation of basins. Energy input was by far the lowest in shallow ripping, followed by deep ripping. These operations can be carried out rapidly and timely (even before the onset of the rains). The most intensive tillage treatments (mouldboard ploughing, ridging) showed higher yields and caused the lowest weed pressure. In the very dry season 2001-2002, however, crops on ripped fields had a higher survival rate than on conventionally tilled fields
