    Characterization of reflected light from the space power system

    Sunlight reflected off large space structures is examined. To assure that this illumination does not exceed the irradiance tolerances of the eye, reflections from these satellites must be controlled by vehicle orientation and surface specifications. The components of various space power system vehicles to determine the reflectances which will significantly contribute to the ground illumination are evaluated. Calculations of reflected solar intensity from various satellite system elements requires description of the elements and of the geometry potential reflectance paths. Surface intensity and the conditions under which it will illuminate a portion of the Earth are also determined

    Hypergeometric decomposition of symmetric K3 quartic pencils

    We study the hypergeometric functions associated to five one-parameter deformations of Delsarte K3 quartic hypersurfaces in projective space. We compute all of their Picard--Fuchs differential equations; we count points using Gauss sums and rewrite this in terms of finite field hypergeometric sums; then we match up each differential equation to a factor of the zeta function, and we write this in terms of global L-functions. This computation gives a complete, explicit description of the motives for these pencils in terms of hypergeometric motives.Comment: 70 pages, minor revision, to appear in Research in the Mathematical Science

    Efficient Computation of Equilibria in Bottleneck Games via Game Transformation

    We study the efficient computation of Nash and strong equilibria in weighted bottleneck games. In such a game different players interact on a set of resources in the way that every player chooses a subset of the resources as her strategy. The cost of a single resource depends on the total weight of players choosing it and the personal cost every player tries to minimize is the cost of the most expensive resource in her strategy, the bottleneck value. To derive efficient algorithms for finding Nash equilibria in these games, we generalize a tranformation of a bottleneck game into a special congestion game introduced by Caragiannis et al. [1]. While investigating the transformation we introduce so-called lexicographic games, in which the aim of a player is not only to minimize her bottleneck value but to lexicographically minimize the ordered vector of costs of all resources in her strategy. For the special case of network bottleneck games, i.e., the set of resources are the edges of a graph and the strategies are paths, we analyse different Greedy type methods and their limitations for extension-parallel and series-parallel graphs

    The role of orienting in vibrissal touch sensing

    Rodents, such as rats and mice, are strongly tactile animals who explore the environment with their long mobile facial whiskers, or macrovibrissae, and orient to explore objects further with their shorter, more densely packed, microvibrissae. Although whisker motion (whisking) has been extensively studied, less is known about how rodents orient their vibrissal system to investigate unexpected stimuli. We describe two studies that address this question. In the first we seek to characterize how adult rats orient toward unexpected macrovibrissal contacts with objects and examine the microvibrissal exploration behavior following such contacts. We show that rats orient to the nearest macrovibrissal contact on an unexpected object, progressively homing in on the nearest contact point on the object in each subsequent whisk. Following contact, rats “dab” against the object with their microvibrissae at an average rate of approximately 8 Hz, which suggests synchronization of microvibrissal dabbing with macrovibrissal motion, and an amplitude of 5 mm. In study two, we examine the role of orienting to tactile contacts in developing rat pups for maintaining aggregations (huddles). We show that young pups are able to orient to contacts with nearby conspecifics before their eyes open implying an important role for the macrovibrissae, which are present from birth, in maintaining contact with conspecifics. Overall, these data suggest that orienting to tactile cues, detected by the vibrissal system, plays a crucial role throughout the life of a rat

    Evaluation of the effects of wood-sourced biochar as a feedlot pen surface amendment on manure nutrient capture

    Feedstuffs utilized in U.S. feedlot finishing rations incorporate high concentrations of N and P, with less than 15% of fed N and P retained by the animal. The remaining N and P are excreted in the manure, where the opportunity for manure N loss via ammonia (NH3) volatilization from the feedlot pen surface is a risk to the environment and lowers the value of manure as a fertilizer. Two nutrient mass balance experiments were conducted during the winter and summer seasons to evaluate the effects of spreading unprocessed Eastern red cedar biochar onto the feedlot pen surface on manure nutrient capture and cattle performance. A 186-d feedlot fnishing experiment was conducted from December to June (WINTER) and a subsequent 153-d fnishing experiment was conducted from June to November (SUMMER). The WINTER experiment evaluated three treatments (5 pens per treatment; 10 steers per pen), including biochar spread on pen surface during the feeding period (1.40 kg biochar/ m2 ; 17.6 m2 /steer soil surface of the pen), hydrated lime spread on pen surface at end of feeding period (1.75 kg/m2 ) and control (no treatment applied). The SUMMER experiment evaluated biochar treatment (1.40 kg biochar/m2 ; 5 pens per treatment; 8 steers per pen; and 22 m2 /steer soil surface of the pen) against control. There were no differences in N and P intake, retention, or excretion (P ≥ 0.38) between WINTER treatments. Steer performance (P ≥ 0.10) and carcass characteristics (P ≥ 0.50) were not impacted by pen treatment in WINTER. Nitrogen and P intake and excretion (P ≥ 0.35) were not different between treatments in SUMMER and retention of N and P was signifcantly greater for the biochar treatment (P ≤0.04) due to greater ADG (P = 0.05). There was no difference in DMI (P = 0.48) in SUMMER, steers on biochar pen treatment had heavier HCW (P = 0.05) and greater ADG, resulting in a tendency for greater feed effciency (P = 0.08). In both experiments, biochar addition to the pen surface tended (P = 0.07) to increase manure N as a percent of manure DM, but this increase in N concentration did not impact kg of N removed from the feedlot pens (P ≥ 0.15) or N losses (P ≥ 0.68). The addition of red cedar biochar to the feedlot pen surface did not increase manure nutrient capture of N or P and did not reduce N losses associated with soil-based feedlot pens

    Morphometric differences in the grasshopper Cornops aquaticum (Bruner, 1906) from South America and South Africa

    The semi-aquatic grasshopper Cornops aquaticum is native to South America and inhabits lowlands from southern Mexico to Central Argentina and Uruguay. It is host-specific to aquatic plants in the genera Eichhornia and Pontederia. A quarantine population has existed in South Africa for 10 y, and it is planned to release it there as a biological control agent of water hyacinth, E. crassipes. Various studies of C. aquaticum are coordinated under HICWA (www.mpil-ploen.mpg.de). This paper compares the morphometry of the release population and 11 native populations in South America. We tested four hypotheses: 1) South African and South American populations of C. aquaticum differ in morphology; 2) the South African laboratory population is more similar to other isolated populations in South America than to nonisolated populations; 3) morphology differs across sites; 4) morphology differs with host plant. South African populations differed from continental nonisolated populations, but not from continental isolated ones. Isolated populations presented smaller individuals than nonisolated, but there was also a change in male morphology: while in nonisolated populations male wing length was similar to their body length, in isolated populations, male wings were smaller than body length. Females were larger when on Eicchornia azurea than on E. crassipes, while males presented larger wings than their body on E. azurea, and similar lengths on E. crassipes. These morphological changes may have resulted from phenotypic plasticity, selection for small size, or because of a loss of genetic diversity in quantitative traits.Fil: Adis, Joachim.     Investigations of hexagonal boron nitride: bulk crystals and atomically-thin two dimensional layers

EdgarHexagonal boron nitride has been used as an inert, refractory material with excellent resistance to thermal decomposition and oxidation for more than fifty years. In the past few years, hBN has been targeted for potential electrical and optical devices such as neutron detectors, ultraviolet light emitters, deep ultraviolet light detectors, and substrates for graphene and other atomically-thin two-dimensional materials. All of these potential applications benefit from high quality, single crystals, with thicknesses varying from nanometers to microns. This research was undertaken to investigate four aspects of hBN crystal growth and recovery. (1) In an effort to optimize hBN crystal growth from a nickel-chromium flux, a series of stepped cooling experiments were undertaken. The temperature profile was stepped in a way as to promote growth in both the a and c directions, at their optimal growth conditions. Crystals were found to be typically 100-500 µm across and thickness of approximately 20-30 µm with a pyramid-like crystal habit. (2) A method for the removal of hBN crystals prior to freezing of the metal flux was demonstrated using a specialized hot pressed boron nitride crucible capable of removing hBN crystals from the flux in situ. (3) Growth of isotopically pure hBN crystals was undertaken. By modifying the crucible material for solution growth, enrichment of hBN crystals over 90% was accomplished. (4) Exfoliation of hBN has many potential applications, specifically as graphene-hBN heterostructures where layers approaching thicknesses of single atoms are most effective surface to interact with graphene as an electronic device. Several methods were tested toward exfoliating a single crystal resulting in few-layered hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets. As a result of these investigations a greater understanding of hBN bulk growth, its isotopic enrichment, its recovery, and its exfoliation was obtained

    Zeta functions of alternate mirror Calabi–Yau families

    We prove that if two Calabi-Yau invertible pencils have the same dual weights, then they share a common factor in their zeta functions. By using Dwork cohomology, we demonstrate that this common factor is related to a hypergeometric Picard–Fuchs differential equation. The factor in the zeta function is defined over the rationals and has degree at least the order of the Picard–Fuchs equation. As an application, we relate several pencils of K3 surfaces to the Dwork pencil, obtaining new cases of arithmetic mirror symmetry

    Investigating the timecourse of accessing conversational implicatures during incremental sentence interpretation

    Many contextual inferences in utterance interpretation are explained as following from the nature of conversation and the assumption that participants are rational. Recent psycholinguistic research has focussed on certain of these ‘Gricean’ inferences and have revealed that comprehenders can access them in online interpretation. However there have been mixed results as to the time-course of access. Some results show that Gricean inferences can be accessed very rapidly, as rapidly as any other contextually specified information (Sedivy, 2003; Grodner, Klein, Carbery, & Tanenhaus, 2010); while other studies looking at the same kind of inference suggest that access to Gricean inferences are delayed relative to other aspects of semantic interpretation (Huang & Snedeker, 2009; in press). While previous timecourse research has focussed on Gricean inferences that support the online assignment of reference to definite expressions, the study reported here examines the timecourse of access to scalar implicatures, which enrich the meaning of an utterance beyond the semantic interpretation. Even if access to Gricean inference in support of reference assignment may be rapid, it is still unknown whether genuinely enriching scalar implicatures are delayed. Our results indicate that scalar implicatures are accessed as rapidly as other contextual inferences. The implications of our results are discussed in reference to the architecture of language comprehension
