Naming Game on Adaptive Weighted Networks
We examine a naming game on an adaptive weighted network. A weight of
connection for a given pair of agents depends on their communication success
rate and determines the probability with which the agents communicate. In some
cases, depending on the parameters of the model, the preference toward
successfully communicating agents is basically negligible and the model behaves
similarly to the naming game on a complete graph. In particular, it quickly
reaches a single-language state, albeit some details of the dynamics are
different from the complete-graph version. In some other cases, the preference
toward successfully communicating agents becomes much more relevant and the
model gets trapped in a multi-language regime. In this case gradual coarsening
and extinction of languages lead to the emergence of a dominant language,
albeit with some other languages still being present. A comparison of
distribution of languages in our model and in the human population is

What Can We Learn From Calf/Cow Ratios?
Trends in population growth can be monitored with data for key vital rates without requiring knowledge of abundance. Adult female survival has the highest elasticity for ungulate population dynamics, but the more variable recruitment rates can be better predictors of local variation in growth rates. Recruitment is often monitored using young adult age ratios, which are difficult to reliably interpret given the contribution of multiple vital rates to annual ratios. We show how concurrent monitoring of adult female survival and age ratios allows both retrospective estimation of empirical population growth rates and the decomposition of recruitment-specific vital rates. We demonstrate the estimation of recruitment and population growth rates for one woodland caribou population using these methods, including elasticity and life-stage simulation analysis of the relative contribution of adult female survival and recruitment rates to variation in population growth. We show, for this woodland caribou population, that adult survival and recruitment rates are nearly equivalent drivers of population growth rates. We recommend the concurrent monitoring of adult female survival to reliably interpret age ratios when managing caribou and other ungulates
Microfluidic devices for terahertz spectroscopy of biomolecules
We demonstrate microfluidic devices for terahertz spectroscopy of biomolecules in aqueous solutions. The devices are fabricated out of a plastic material that is both mechanically rigid and optically transparent with near-zero dispersion in the terahertz frequency range. Using a low-power terahertz time-domain spectrometer, we experimentally measure the absorption spectra of the vibrational modes of bovine serum albumin from 0.5–2.5 THz and find good agreement with previously reported data obtained using large-volume solutions and a high-power free-electron laser. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of performing high sensitivity terahertz spectroscopy of biomolecules in aqueous solutions with detectable molecular quantities as small as 10 picomoles using microfluidic devices
Empty spaces and the value of symbols: Estonia's 'war of monuments' from another angle
Taking as its point of departure the recent heightened discussion surrounding publicly sited monuments in Estonia, this article investigates the issue from the perspective of the country's eastern border city of Narva, focusing especially upon the restoration in 2000 of a 'Swedish Lion' monument to mark the 300th anniversary of Sweden's victory over Russia at the first Battle of Narva. This commemoration is characterised here as a successful local negotiation of a potentially divisive past, as are subsequent commemorations of the Russian conquest of Narva in 1704. A recent proposal to erect a statue of Peter the Great in the city, however, briefly threatened to open a new front in Estonia's ongoing 'war of monuments'. Through a discussion of these episodes, the article seeks to link the Narva case to broader conceptual issues of identity politics, nationalism and post-communist transition
Love, rights and solidarity: studying children's participation using Honneth's theory of recognition
Recent attempts to theorize children’s participation have drawn on a wide range of ideas, concepts and models from political and social theory. The aim of this article is to explore the specific usefulness of Honneth’s theory of a ‘struggle for recognition’ in thinking about this area of practice. The article identifies what is distinctive about Honneth’s theory of recognition, and how it differs from other theories of recognition. It then considers the relevance of Honneth’s conceptual framework to the social position of children, including those who may be involved in a variety of ‘participatory’ activities.
It looks at how useful Honneth’s ideas are in direct engagement with young people’s praxis, drawing on ethnographic research with members of a children and young people’s forum. The article concludes by reflecting on the implications of this theoretical approach and the further questions which it opens up for theories of participation and of adult–child relations more generally
Multi-Element Abundance Measurements from Medium-Resolution Spectra. IV. Alpha Element Distributions in Milky Way Dwarf Satellite Galaxies
We derive the star formation histories of eight dwarf spheroidal (dSph) Milky
Way satellite galaxies from their alpha element abundance patterns. Nearly 3000
stars from our previously published catalog (Paper II) comprise our data set.
The average [alpha/Fe] ratios for all dSphs follow roughly the same path with
increasing [Fe/H]. We do not observe the predicted knees in the [alpha/Fe] vs.
[Fe/H] diagram, corresponding to the metallicity at which Type Ia supernovae
begin to explode. Instead, we find that Type Ia supernova ejecta contribute to
the abundances of all but the most metal-poor ([Fe/H] < -2.5) stars. We have
also developed a chemical evolution model that tracks the star formation rate,
Types II and Ia supernova explosions, and supernova feedback. Without metal
enhancement in the supernova blowout, massive amounts of gas loss define the
history of all dSphs except Fornax, the most luminous in our sample. All six of
the best-fit model parameters correlate with dSph luminosity but not with
velocity dispersion, half-light radius, or Galactocentric distance.Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ; very minor

The Chemical Evolution of the Ursa Minor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We present an abundance analysis based on high resolution spectra of 10 stars
selected to span the full range in metallicity in the Ursa Minor dwarf
spheroidal galaxy. We find [Fe/H] for the sample stars ranges from -1.35 to
-3.10 dex and establish the trends of the abundance ratios [X/Fe]. In key
cases, particularly for the alpha-elements, these resemble those for stars in
the outer part of the Galactic halo, especially at the lowest metallicities
probed. The n-capture elements show a r-process distribution over the full
range of Fe-metallicity. This suggests that the duration of star formation in
the UMi dSph was shorter than in other dSph galaxies. The derived ages for a
larger sample of UMi stars with more uncertain metallicities also suggest a
population dominated by uniformly old (~13 Gyr) stars, with a hint of an
age-metallicity relationship.
In comparing our results for UMi, our earlier work in Draco, and published
studies of more metal-rich dSph Galactic satellites, there appears to be a
pattern of moving from a chemical inventory for dSph giants with [Fe/H] < -2
dex which is very similar to that of stars in the outer part of the Galactic
halo (enhanced alpha/Fe relative to the Sun, coupled with subsolar [X/Fe] for
the heavy neutron capture elements and r-process domination), switching to
subsolar alpha-elements and super-solar s-process dominated neutron capture
elements for the highest [Fe/H] dSph stars. The combination of low star
formation rates over a varying and sometimes extended duration that produced
the stellar populations in the local dSph galaxies with [Fe/H] > -1.5 dex leads
to a chemical inventory wildly discrepant from that of any component of the

Progress in the Development of the 1 m Model of the 70 mm Aperture Quadrupole for the LHC Low- Insertions
Within the LHC magnet development program Oxford Instruments has built a one metre model of the 70 mm aperture low-beta quadrupole. The magnet features a four layer coil wound from two 8.2 mm wide graded NbTi cables, and is designed for 250 T/m at 1.9 K. The magnet has previously been tested between 4.5 K and 2.3 K. In this paper we review the magnet rebuild and the subsequent tests. Results on magnet training at 4.3 K and 1.9 K are presented along with the results related to quench protection studies.
Transcending Scale Dependence in Identifying Habitat with Resource Selection Functions
Multi-scale resource selection modeling is used to identify factors that limit species distributions across scales of space and time. This multi-scale nature of habitat suitability complicates the translation of inferences to single, spatial depictions of habitat required for conservation of species. We estimated resource selection functions (RSFs) across three scales for a threatened ungulate, woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou), with two objectives: (1) to infer the relative effects of two forms of anthropogenic disturbance (forestry and linear features) on woodland caribou distributions at multiple scales and (2) to estimate scale-integrated resource selection functions (SRSFs) that synthesize results across scales for management-oriented habitat suitability mapping. We found a previously undocumented scale-specific switch in woodland caribou response to two forms of anthropogenic disturbance. Caribou avoided forestry cut-blocks at broad scales according to first-and second-order RSFs and avoided linear features at fine scales according to third-order RSFs, corroborating predictions developed according to predator-mediated effects of each disturbance type. Additionally, a single SRSF validated as well as each of three single-scale RSFs when estimating habitat suitability across three different spatial scales of prediction. We demonstrate that a single SRSF can be applied to predict relative habitat suitability at both local and landscape scales in support of critical habitat identification and species recovery
Geographic Coincidence of Increased Malaria Transmission Hazard and Vulnerability Occurring at the Periphery of two Tanzanian Villages.
The goal of malaria elimination necessitates an improved understanding of any fine-scale geographic variations in transmission risk so that complementary vector control tools can be integrated into current vector control programmes as supplementary measures that are spatially targeted to maximize impact upon residual transmission. This study examines the distribution of host-seeking malaria vectors at households within two villages in rural Tanzania. Host-seeking mosquitoes were sampled from 72 randomly selected households in two villages on a monthly basis throughout 2008 using CDC light-traps placed beside occupied nets. Spatial autocorrelation in the dataset was examined using the Moran's I statistic and the location of any clusters was identified using the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic. Statistical associations between the household characteristics and clusters of mosquitoes were assessed using a generalized linear model for each species. For both Anopheles gambiae sensu lato and Anopheles funestus, the density of host-seeking females was spatially autocorrelated, or clustered. For both species, houses with low densities were clustered in the semi-urban village centre while houses with high densities were clustered in the periphery of the villages. Clusters of houses with low or high densities of An. gambiae s.l. were influenced by the number of residents in nearby houses. The occurrence of high-density clusters of An. gambiae s.l. was associated with lower elevations while An. funestus was also associated with higher elevations. Distance from the village centre was also positively correlated with the number of household occupants and having houses constructed with open eaves. The results of the current study highlight that complementary vector control tools could be most effectively targeted to the periphery of villages where the households potentially have a higher hazard (mosquito densities) and vulnerability (open eaves and larger households) to malaria infection
