A new approach to the study of the ground-state properties of 2D Ising spin glass

A new approach known as flat histogram method is used to study the +/-J Ising spin glass in two dimensions. Temperature dependence of the energy, the entropy, and other physical quantities can be easily calculated and we give the results for the zero-temperature limit. For the ground-state energy and entropy of an infinite system size, we estimate e0 = -1.4007 +/- 0.0085 and s0 = 0.0709 +/- 0.006, respectively. Both of them agree well with previous calculations. The time to find the ground-states as well as the tunneling times of the algorithm are also reported and compared with other methods.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

A new species of the micro snail genus Heleobia (Caenogastropoda, Cochliopidae) from Bahia, Brazil

The prey of a recent described characid fish, so far endemic of the small lake Pratinha (Iraquara, Bahia, Brazil), a small (~2.5 mm) lentic gastropod, revealed to be a new (possible endemic) species. It is herein formally described as Heleobia brucutu sp. nov. The description includes anatomical features, revealing interesting idiosyncrasies such as egg laying attached to shell, and penis lacking glands, but with terminal papilla. The new species appears to be endemic of that small lake as much as its fish predator. As the species is now formally described and named, protective efforts must be implemented

Pump-probe technique for excited state absorption and stimulated emission measurements in rare earth ion doped solid materials

Rare earth ion doped solid state materials are the most important active media of near-infrared and visible lasers and other photonic devices. In these ions, the occurrence of Excited State Absorptions (ESA), from long lived electronic levels, is commonplace. Since ESA can deeply affect the efficiencies of the rare earth emissions, evaluation of these transitions cross sections is of greatest importance in predicting the potential applications of a given material. In this paper a detailed description of the pump-probe technique for ESA measurements is presented, with a review of several examples of applications in Nd3+, Tm3+ and Er3+ doped materials

Ao direcionar as atenções à saúde ocupacional dos colaboradores dentro da organização, a empresa acaba por implantar uma fórmula para o sucesso nesse ambiente tão competitivo do mundo globalizado. Trata-se de uma pesquisa bibliográfica de natureza qualitativa onde chegou-se à conclusão de que é de muita importância levar à prática as teorias estudadas sobre a saúde organizacional. Buscou-se apresentar também algumas sugestões teóricas para amenizar os efeitos do estresse afim de melhorar a qualidade de vida dos indivíduos dentro das organizações

Participatory management assessment in State Parks open for public visits in the state of Minas Gerais

Assessing and understanding participation effectiveness is fundamental to promote management excellence in a Conservation Unit. The central topic of this study is the Advisory Councils of State Parks open to public visits in Minas Gerais, and was written after applying a questionnaire that allowed making a participatory management self-perception diagnosis based on understanding the technically-defined duties for these councilors, as established in Federal Decree No. 4,340/2002. Through its autarchic body, Instituto Estadual de Florestas, the state of Minas Gerais is responsible for administering 42 Parks, 11 of which are the basis of this study for being considered open to the public and having adequate infrastructures to welcome and serve visitors. In this research, the counselors' strengths, difficulties, shortcomings and understanding in the “institutional”, “individual” and “functional” dimensions are evaluated through an adaptation of the technique called “Medición de la efectividad del Manejo de Áreas Protegidas”, conceived by Cifuentes, Izurieta and De Faria (2000). 127 participation instances were obtained from an overall scenario of 229 counselors. The results evidence predominance of the male gender (68%), urban areas residents (83%) and individuals with graduate studies (55%). Regarding the “institutional” and “functional” dimensions, the majority (56%) is not clear about the reasons for creating the Park in which they are advisory members. Unawareness is also verified in the fact that only 8% understand the reasons for the Conservation Unit to exist. Considering the methodology used, effectiveness of the Parks was assessed as with more than 50% of their counselors participating in this research, and their participation effectiveness was considered satisfactory. However, the need for continuous actions is reinforced as a motivating factor for greater involvement of the counselors and local communities in management of the Parks, fundamental to achieving their main creation objectives.A avaliação e a compreensão da efetividade da participação são fundamentais na promoção da excelência da gestão de uma Unidade de Conservação. Este estudo tem como tema central os Conselhos Consultivos dos Parques Estaduais abertos à visitação pública em Minas Gerais, e foi escrito após a aplicação de um questionário que permitiu realizar um diagnóstico de autopercepção da gestão participativa sobre o entendimento dos deveres tecnicamente definidos para esses conselheiros, estabelecidos no Decreto Federal 4.340/2002. O Estado de Minas Gerais, por meio de sua autarquia, o Instituto Estadual de Florestas, é responsável pela administração de 42 Parques, sendo 11 a base desse estudo por serem considerados abertos à visitação pública, possuindo infraestrutura adequada de recebimento e atendimento ao visitante. Nessa pesquisa avalia-se as potencialidades, dificuldades, carências e entendimentos dos conselheiros nas dimensões da institucionalidade, individualidade e funcionalidade por meio de uma adaptação da técnica denominada Medicion de la efectividadedel Manejo de Areas Protegidas, idealizada por Cifuentes, Izurieta e De Faria (2000). Foram obtidas, 127 participações, em um cenário total de 229 conselheiros. Os resultados evidenciaram a dominância do gênero masculino (68%), residentes em zonas urbanas (83%) e pós-graduados (55%). Nas dimensões institucional e funcional, a maior parte (56%) não possui clareza sobre os motivos da criação do Parque em que é membro conselheiro. Desconhecimento também em que, somente 8% compreendem os motivos da existência da unidade de conservação. Considerando-se a metodologia utilizada, avaliou-se a efetividade dos Parques com índice superior a 50% de seus conselheiros participando dessa pesquisa, e sua efetividade de participação foi considerada satisfatória. Entretanto, reforça-se a necessidade de ações contínuas como fator motivador para um maior envolvimento dos conselheiros e das comunidades locais na gestão dos Parques, fundamentais para que se alcancem seus principais objetivos de criação

A rede de proteção à mulher em situação de violência doméstica : avanços e desafios

No Brasil, a violência nas relações conjugais tem sido objeto de crescente denúncia junto à polícia, ao judiciário e aos órgãos públicos de Assistência Social, educação e saúde. A violência doméstica acarreta amplas repercussões psicossociais, econômicas e políticas, não só no plano individual e familiar como também na esfera social da mulher. Diante da complexidade da problemática, permeada por preconceitos e diferentes discriminações, as mulheres vítimas de violência doméstica, com o passar dos anos, vão sofrendo mudanças diversas, muitas vezes drásticas, no meio em que vivem e com quem convivem, resultando na completa fragilização de suas redes de pertencimento.O presente artigo apresenta dados baseados em duas pesquisas: "Rede de atendimento à mulher em situação de violência doméstica: Limites e Possibilidades"; e "Das lágrimas à esperança: o processo de fortalecimento das mulheres em situação de violência doméstica", desenvolvidas no Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisa em Violência - NEPEVI, Faculdade de Serviço Social da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Brasil. Nosso objetivo foi fornecer subsídios teóricos práticos para contribuir com o atendimento e fortalecimento de mulheres em situação de violência doméstica. Esta pesquisa consistiu em identificar os limites e possibilidades da rede de apoio a mulher em situação de violência doméstica nos municípios de POA, São Leopoldo e Novo Hamburgo. Foram entrevistadas usuárias dos serviços da rede de proteção à mulher e profissionais vinculados a rede, entre eles, assistentes sociais, psicólogos, delegadas, entre outros.In Brazil, violence in marital relations has been the object of an increase in police charges, as well as in the judiciary system and public institutions of social welfare, education and health. Domestic violence causes large psychosocial, economic and political repercussions in the individual and family sphere as well as in the woman's social sphere. Given the complexity of the problem, surrounded by the prejudice and different types of discrimination, women who are victims of domestic violence suffer diverse changes, often drastic, in the environment they live and with whom they live as time passes by. This results in a complete process of fragilization in their belonging networks. The present article presents data based on two researches: "The Support Network for Women in Domestic Violence Situations: Limits and Possibilities", and "From tears to Hope: The Process of Empowerment of Women in Domestic Violence Situation", carried out in the Research Group on Violence - NEPEVI, Faculty of Social Work, Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Brazil. Our purpose was to provide theoretical and practical bases to contribute with the services and empowerment of women in domestic violence situations. This research consisted in the identification of the limits and possibilities of the network support for women in domestic violence situation in the municipalities of Porto Alegre, São Leopoldo and Novo Hamburgo, State of Rio Grande do Sul. Women who were service users of this network of support and professionals connected to this network, among them, social workers, psychologists, delegates, and others were interviewed
