Considering that there is a political-digital movement of globalization of which Brazil makes part and for which access to English knowledge is demanded, this paper discusses the theme of social/digital inclusion as an effect of a formal education in English at university level in Brazil. With the understanding that digital and social inclusions can be facets of one same process, a third, linguistic facet, is incorporated in our reflection and made visible, as the three aspects are conceived as interconstitutive of an event that can be, for certain postcolonial, non English speaking countries, of the rising of a social visibility and place. The corpus of analysis chosen for this study is hybrid, composed of a collection of answers to questionnaires and postings in discussion forums by students who participate in a four-year undergraduate long distance course of English and English Literature provided by a Federal University in the Southeast region of Brazil. The course licenses teachers for K-12 schools and is part of a Federal Program do graduate teachers. Our theoretical framework is a discursive one (Pêcheux, 1969, 1975), from which we see both English and ICTs as kinds of knowledge that are practiced within conditions of production related to history, processes of memory and subjectivation, together with post-colonial reflections on language policies and practices (Spivak, 1999), from which we discuss the specific characteristics of teaching/learning English in Brazil

Recent controversies surrounding the sociological canon have foregrounded the need to think about the process of erasing and silencing ‘non-Western’ and female contributions to the discipline. By emphasizing the androcentrism of the sociological canon, our goal is to contribute to the construction of a less biased and limited sociology through the inclusion of female voices previously excluded from its official history. We start by briefly describing the conditions that enabled this exclusion, taking the Chicago women sociologists as an example, along with the emergence of a particular conception of theory and research associated with the formation of the classical canon. Next, by questioning the use of terms such as ‘founders,’ ‘classics’ and ‘canon,’ we maintain that the existence of a canon, classical or otherwise, plays a central role in the identity of the discipline and of social theory itself. Finally, in order to productively include the contributions of sociology’s women pioneers, we propose substituting the literary metaphor of the canon with a musical one: a type of polyphony that emphasizes the contrast between different voices and simultaneously establishes how they can be combined in a common tradition that makes dialogue possible.

This article discusses the routine processes of the construction of transparency policies to combat corruption in Brazil, based on field experiences in two organs of control. Its focus is not on the effectiveness of these policies but on the understanding of its specific moral dimension: how these values are incorporated in the daily practices of auditors. Pursuing a moral anthropology perspective for the understanding of the state, the aim is to understand, in the process of its constitution, the power logics realized in the ideal Transparent State. The difficulties encountered in the attempt to approach state bureaucracies and even to present academically the “results” of a world, characterized by a dilemma between secrecy on the one hand and “fictions” of transparency on the other, are employed as a way to understand the ambiguities in the constitution of a project which proposes “openness” or visibility of power

An Empirical Evaluation of the Cost and Effectiveness of Structural Testing Criteria for Concurrent Programs

AbstractConcurrent program testing is not a trivial task. Features like nondeterminism, communication and synchronization impose new challenges that must be considered during the testing activity. Some initiatives have proposed testing approaches for concurrent programs, in which different paradigms and programming languages are considered. However, in general, these contributions do not present a well-formed experimental study to validate their ideas. The problem is that the data used and generated during the validation is not always available, hampering the replication of studies in the context of other testing approaches. This paper presents an experimental study, taking into account the concepts of the Experimental Software En- gineering to evaluate the cost, effectiveness and strength of the structural testing criteria for message-passing programs. The evaluation was conducted considering a benchmark composed of eight MPI programs. A set of eight structural testing criteria defined for message-passing programs was evaluated with the ValiMPI testing tool, which provides the support required to apply the investigated testing criteria. The results indicate the complementary aspect of the criteria and the information about cost and effectiveness has contributed to the establishment of an incremental testing strategy to apply the criteria. All material generated during the experimental study is available for further comparisons

We report the results of a survey applied to students and professionals in the area of physics in Brazil, pursuing to draw a portrait of the composition of this community in terms of the social markers of difference age, race, ethnicity, geographical origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, and disabilities. The main goal was to quantify the representativeness of different groups in the community and to detect motivations and difficulties encountered by each group throughout their studies and career. This survey was open to the members of the Brazilian Physics Society from July to September 2018. Our outcomes reveal that (i) the Brazilian physicists community is poorly diverse even in comparison with the population composition, (ii) the main obstacle to pursue the career is socioeconomic vulnerability, and (iii) harassment is high in our society, being more pronounced among women. We hope that these results will be useful to scientific and educational institutions to develop different strategies and policies to change this current situation
