A statistical method for measuring the Galactic potential and testing gravity with cold tidal streams
We introduce the Minimum Entropy Method, a simple statistical technique for
constraining the Milky Way gravitational potential and simultaneously testing
different gravity theories directly from 6D phase-space surveys and without
adopting dynamical models. We demonstrate that orbital energy distributions
that are separable (i.e. independent of position) have an associated entropy
that increases under wrong assumptions about the gravitational potential and/or
gravity theory. Of known objects, `cold' tidal streams from low-mass
progenitors follow orbital distributions that most nearly satisfy the condition
of separability. Although the orbits of tidally stripped stars are perturbed by
the progenitor's self-gravity, systematic variations of the energy distribution
can be quantified in terms of the cross-entropy of individual tails, giving
further sensitivity to theoretical biases in the host potential. The
feasibility of using the Minimum Entropy Method to test a wide range of gravity
theories is illustrated by evolving restricted N-body models in a Newtonian
potential and examining the changes in entropy introduced by Dirac, MONDian and

Mitochondrial and chloroplast stress responses are modulated in distinct touch and chemical inhibition phases
Previous studies have identified a range of transcription factors that modulate retrograde regulation of mitochondrial and chloroplast functions in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). However, the relative importance of these regulators and whether they act downstream of separate or overlapping signaling cascades is still unclear. Here, we demonstrate that multiple stress-related signaling pathways, with distinct kinetic signatures, converge on overlapping gene sets involved in energy organelle function. The transcription factor ANAC017 is almost solely responsible for transcript induction of marker genes around 3 to 6 h after chemical inhibition of organelle function and is a key regulator of mitochondrial and specific types of chloroplast retrograde signaling. However, an independent and highly transient gene expression phase, initiated within 10 to 30 min after treatment, also targets energy organelle functions, and is related to touch and wounding responses. Metabolite analysis demonstrates that this early response is concurrent with rapid changes in tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates and large changes in transcript abundance of genes encoding mitochondrial dicarboxylate carrier proteins. It was further demonstrated that transcription factors AtWRKY15 and AtWRKY40 have repressive regulatory roles in this touch-responsive gene expression. Together, our results show that several regulatory systems can independently affect energy organelle function in response to stress, providing different means to exert operational control
Comparison of Outcomes between Endoscopic and Transcleral Cyclophotocoagulation.
Importance: Traditionally cyclophotocoagulation has been reserved as a treatment of last resort for eyes with advanced stage glaucoma, but increasingly it is offered to eyes with less severe disease. Endoscopic approaches in particular are utilized in increasing numbers of patients despite only a small number of publications on its results. Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of endoscopic and transcleral cyclophotocoagulation (ECP and TCP) procedures in eyes with refractory glaucomas. Design, Setting, and Participants: A chart review was performed on consecutive patients who underwent ECP and TCP at a tertiary ophthalmology care center between January 2000 and December 2010. Cases with fewer than 3 months of follow-up or that had concurrent pressure reducing procedures were excluded. The main outcome measures examined were intraocular pressure (IOP), number of glaucoma medications, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), additional glaucoma procedure required, and complications. Main Outcomes and Measures: Forty-two eyes (42 patients) that underwent ECP and forty-four eyes (44 patients) that underwent TCP were identified. The TCP group had a statistically higher mean age (71.2 ± 16.7 vs. 58.1 ± 22.9 years, respectively), larger proportion of neovascular glaucoma (40.9% vs. 16.7%), worse initial BCVA (logMAR 2.86 vs. 1.81), and higher preoperative IOP (45.3 vs. 26.6 mmHg) than the ECP group. At 12 months follow-up, the mean IOP difference between groups was not statistically significant, although the change in IOP from baseline to 12 months was greater for the TCP group (p = 0.006). The rates of progression to no light perception (NLP) and phthisis bulbi were significantly higher amongst TCP eyes than ECP eyes (27.2% vs. 4.8%, p = 0.017, and 20.5% vs. 0%, p = 0.003, respectively). Of these eyes that progressed, a majority had neovascular glaucoma (NVG). Corneal decompensation was the most frequent complication following ECP (11.9%). Conclusions and Relevance: In patients with preoperative BCVA of 20/400 or better, overall complication rates (cystoid macular edema, exudative retinal detachment, inflammation, cornea decompensation) were higher after ECP than with TCP. In refractory glaucomas in a real world setting (not a trial), TCP was more frequently used in ischemic eyes. TCP was associated with a higher rate of progression to phthisis bulbi and loss of light perception than ECP. However, ECP was associated with a clinically significant rate of corneal decompensation. These outcomes likely were related to the severity of underlying ocular diseases found in these eyes
Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Optic Nerve Traction During Adduction in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma With Normal Intraocular Pressure.
PurposeWe used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to ascertain effects of optic nerve (ON) traction in adduction, a phenomenon proposed as neuropathic in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).MethodsSeventeen patients with POAG and maximal IOP ≤ 20 mm Hg, and 31 controls underwent MRI in central gaze and 20° to 30° abduction and adduction. Optic nerve and sheath area centroids permitted computation of midorbital lengths versus minimum paths.ResultsAverage mean deviation (±SEM) was -8.2 ± 1.2 dB in the 15 patients with POAG having interpretable perimetry. In central gaze, ON path length in POAG was significantly more redundant (104.5 ± 0.4% of geometric minimum) than in controls (102.9 ± 0.4%, P = 2.96 × 10-4). In both groups the ON became significantly straighter in adduction (28.6 ± 0.8° in POAG, 26.8 ± 1.1° in controls) than central gaze and abduction. In adduction, the ON in POAG straightened to 102.0% ± 0.2% of minimum path length versus 104.5% ± 0.4% in central gaze (P = 5.7 × 10-7), compared with controls who straightened to 101.6% ± 0.1% from 102.9% ± 0.3% in central gaze (P = 8.7 × 10-6); and globes retracted 0.73 ± 0.09 mm in POAG, but only 0.07 ± 0.08 mm in controls (P = 8.8 × 10-7). Both effects were confirmed in age-matched controls, and remained significant after correction for significant effects of age and axial globe length (P = 0.005).ConclusionsAlthough tethering and elongation of ON and sheath are normal in adduction, adduction is associated with abnormally great globe retraction in POAG without elevated IOP. Traction in adduction may cause mechanical overloading of the ON head and peripapillary sclera, thus contributing to or resulting from the optic neuropathy of glaucoma independent of IOP
Impacts of the Primary School Free Breakfast Initiative on socio-economic inequalities in breakfast consumption among 9–11-year-old schoolchildren in Wales
Objectives - Universal interventions may widen or narrow inequalities if disproportionately effective among higher or lower socio-economic groups. The present paper examines impacts of the Primary School Free Breakfast Initiative in Wales on inequalities in children's dietary behaviours and cognitive functioning.<p></p>
Design Cluster - randomised controlled trial. Responses were linked to free school meal (FSM) entitlement via the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage databank. Impacts on inequalities were evaluated using weighted school-level regression models with interaction terms for intervention × whole-school percentage FSM entitlement and intervention × aggregated individual FSM entitlement. Individual-level regression models included interaction terms for intervention × individual FSM entitlement.<p></p>
Setting - Fifty-five intervention and fifty-six wait-list control primary schools.<p></p>
Subjects - Approximately 4500 children completed measures of dietary behaviours and cognitive tests at baseline and 12-month follow-up.<p></p>
Results School-level models indicated that children in intervention schools ate a greater number of healthy items for breakfast than children in control schools (b = 0·25; 95 % CI 0·07, 0·44), with larger increases observed in more deprived schools (interaction term b = 1·76; 95 % CI 0·36, 3·16). An interaction between intervention and household-level deprivation was not significant. Despite no main effects on breakfast skipping, a significant interaction was observed, indicating declines in breakfast skipping in more deprived schools (interaction term b = −0·07; 95 % CI −0·15, −0·00) and households (OR = 0·67; 95 % CI 0·46, 0·98). No significant influence on inequality was observed for the remaining outcomes.<p></p>
Conclusions - Universal breakfast provision may reduce socio-economic inequalities in consumption of healthy breakfast items and breakfast skipping. There was no evidence of intervention-generated inequalities in any outcomes
The Least Luminous Galaxy: Spectroscopy of the Milky Way Satellite Segue 1
We present Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy of Segue 1, an ultra-low luminosity (M_V
= -1.5) Milky Way satellite companion. While the combined size and luminosity
of Segue 1 are consistent with either a globular cluster or a dwarf galaxy, we
present spectroscopic evidence that this object is a dark matter-dominated
dwarf galaxy. We identify 24 stars as members of Segue 1 with a mean
heliocentric recession velocity of 206 +/- 1.3 kms. We measure an internal
velocity dispersion of 4.3+/-1.2 kms. Under the assumption that these stars are
in dynamical equilibrium, we infer a total mass of 4.5^{+4.7}_{-2.5} x 10^5
Msun in the case where mass-follow-light; using a two-component maximum
likelihood model, we determine a similar mass within the stellar radius of 50
pc. This implies a mass-to-light ratio of ln(M/L_V) = 7.2^{+1.1}_{-1.2} or
M/L_V = 1320^{+2680}_{-940}. The error distribution of the mass-to-light ratio
is nearly log-normal, thus Segue 1 is dark matter-dominated at a high
significance. Using spectral synthesis modeling, we derive a metallicity for
the single red giant branch star in our sample of [Fe/H]=-3.3 +/- 0.2 dex.
Finally, we discuss the prospects for detecting gamma-rays from annihilation of
dark matter particles and show that Segue 1 is the most promising satellite for
indirect dark matter detection. We conclude that Segue 1 is the least luminous
of the ultra-faint galaxies recently discovered around the Milky Way, and is

Mediating punitiveness: understanding public attitudes towards work-related fatality cases
This paper concerns an empirical investigation into public attitudes towards work-related fatality cases, where organizational offenders cause the death of workers or members of the public. This issue is particularly relevant following the introduction of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 into UK law. Here, as elsewhere, the use of criminal law against companies reflects governmental concerns over public confidence in the law’s ability to regulate risk. The empirical findings demonstrate that high levels of public concern over these cases do not translate into punitive attitudes. Such cases are viewed rationally and constructively, and lead to instrumental rather than purely expressive enforcement preferences
The 'global city' misconceived: the myth of 'global management' in transnational service firms
The ‘global city hypothesis' proposed by Saskia Sassen – and subsequently developed by Manuel Castells and others in the theory of a globalized urban network – has in recent years formed the basis for the argument that power and control in transnational firms (TNCs) is primarily situated in global head-offices. Such offices are located in key urban centres such as London, New York or Tokyo where global managerial power is ultimately wielded and where senior managers make strategic decisions about transnational business activity. This paper takes issue with this theoretical legacy, arguing that the idea of strong centralised managerial power and control in contemporary TNCs is far more complex than this literature suggests. It explores how managerial control in some of the supposedly most globalized of business service industries – investment banking and management consultancy – cannot be understood as being centralised in global headquarter offices, and nor does it purely reside with a few senior managers at the top of the transnational organisation. Rather, it argues that managerial control in TNCs is diffused throughout a transnational network of management-level employees, and that strategic power in transnational firms resides with a larger and more dispersed group of actors than has been previously suggested. These arguments are developed through analysis of qualitative research into the managerial strategies and practices of senior business practitioners in the transnational investment banking and management consultancy industries. In presenting qualitative data from interviews with senior management in transnational corporate head offices, the paper thus examines the decision-making process of global management practice and unpacks the complex context in which transnational corporate strategy develops in such firms
The ORSA requirement : insurance practitioners’ concerns
ORSA requires every insurance company to demonstrate that it has an effective Risk Management program, with scenario analysis, stress testing and capital solvency models in place that can help it withstand normal and extreme risk events. Each ORSA report should have risk management activities unique to the company and provide a clear explanation as to the policies, processes, and procedures it uses to identify, treat, and monitor risks to the organization in a way that the report and models used reflect the most likely and accurate picture of the company's financial performance in normal and extreme situations. The bottom line for insurance undertakings in ORSA is to provide their regulators with an insight into their ability to manage risks and stay solvent.
This paper uncovers the concerns and respective dangers faced by Insurance undertakings when drawing up and using the ORSA report. It shows that, in practice there are some crucial concerns about this report, which need to be looked into and understood and which seemingly are not always being well addressed by the employees and the respective Boards. Thereby, the results of ORSA, may not be reliable and are prone to dangers and limitations. The aim is to trigger debate among insurance undertakings as to how they can apply and manage these concerns, dangers and limitations.peer-reviewe
Lucky Imaging Adaptive Optics of the brown dwarf binary GJ569Bab
The potential of combining Adaptive Optics (AO) and Lucky Imaging (LI) to
achieve high precision astrometry and differential photometry in the optical is
investigated by conducting observations of the close 0\farcs1 brown dwarf
binary GJ569Bab. We took 50000 -band images with our LI instrument FastCam
attached to NAOMI, the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope (WHT) AO facility. In
order to extract the most of the astrometry and photometry of the GJ569Bab
system we have resorted to a PSF fitting technique using the primary star
GJ569A as a suitable PSF reference which exhibits an -band magnitude of
. The AO+LI observations at WHT were able to resolve the binary
system GJ569Bab located at 4\farcs 92 \pm 0\farcs05 from GJ569A. We measure a
separation of mas and -band magnitudes of
and and colors of 2.720.08 and 2.830.08 for
the Ba and Bb components, respectively. Our study rules out the presence of any
other companion to GJ569A down to magnitude I 17 at distances larger than
1\arcsec. The colors measured are consistent with M8.5-M9 spectral types
for the Ba and Bb components. The available dynamical, photometric and
spectroscopic data are consistent with a binary system with Ba being slightly
(10-20%) more massive than Bb. We obtain new orbital parameters which are in
