A comparison of the globular cluster luminosity functions of the inner and outer halo of the Milky Way and M31

    Get PDF
We show that the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) of the inner halo of the Milky Way is statistically different from the GCLF of the outer halo. We also find a similar difference between the inner and outer halo population of M31. We assert that this difference is evidence for some form of dynamical evolution of the cluster population and/or a dependence of GCLF shape on the environment in which the cluster population formed. We also find that the turnover luminosity of the GCLF is unaffected by these differences and further assert that this stability of the turnover luminosity affirms its usefulness as an indicator of cosmic distance.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, submitted to MNRA

Porous mandrels provide uniform deformation in hydrostatic powder metallurgy

Porous copper mandrels prevent uneven deformation of beryllium machining blanks. The beryllium powder is arranged around these mandrels and hot isostatically pressed to form the blanks. The mandrels are then removed by leaching

Large seals fabricated from small segments reduce procurement lead time

Large diameter seals are fabricated from narrow strip stock welded in segments to form a complete ring. This technique could be used to reduce the cost of critical, large diameter seals in the heating and ventilating industry, petrochemical industry, and marine fabrication industry

Psychological Traits and Earnings Differences Among Men: A Study of Second - Generation Immigrants in Sweden

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to analyse the impact of psychological traits on earnings differentials between second-generation immigrants and individuals with native-born parents. The study is based on the cohort of men born in 1973 and residing in Sweden in December 1990. In this paper we use an indicator of psychological ability measured in connection to the military enrolment test in Sweden. The results show that the measure of psychological traits is an important determinant of earnings at the age of 30. Using an Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition we find that the earnings differences between second-generation immigrants and individuals with native born parents to a large part are explained by differences in endowments of psychological traits.Earnings differentials; psychological traits; military enrolment test; secondgeneration immigrants; Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition

Historical Macroeconomics and American Macroeconomic History

What can macroeconomic history offer macroeconomic theorists and macroeconometricians? Macroeconomic history offers more than longer time series or special `controlled experiments.' It suggests an historical definition of the economy, which has implications for macroeconometric methods. The defining characteristic of the historical view is its emphasis on `path dependence': ways in which the cumulative past, including the history of shocks and their effects, change the structure of the economy. This essay reviews American macroeconomic history to illustrate its potential uses and draw out methodological implications. `Keynesian' models can account for the most obvious cycle patterns in all historical periods, while `new classical' models cannot. Nominal wage rigidity was important historically and some models of wage rigidity receive more support from history than others.A shortcoming of both Keynesian and new-classical approaches is the assumption that low-frequency change is exogenous to demand. The history of the Kuznets cycle shows how aggregate-demand shocks can produce endogenous changes in aggregate supply. Economies of scale, learning effects, and convergences of expectations-many within the spatial contexts of city building and frontier settlement-seem to have been very important in making the aggregate supply `path-dependent.' Institutional innovation (especially government regulation) has been another source of endogenous change in aggregate supply. The historical view's emphasis on endogenous structural change points in the analysis over short sample periods to identify the sources and consequences of macroeconomic shocks.

Civil Returns of Military Training: A Study of Young Men in Sweden

The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of military training on earnings for young men in Sweden. The analysis is based on the cohort of men born in 1973. The 1973 cohort was conscripted during a time of rapid change in the Swedish security policy and substantial cutdowns of the armed forces. As a consequence, a relatively large part of the cohort was assigned a service category after the enlistment test but one third of these individuals were never conscripted. We argue that these organizational changes along with the set of important background variables that are available makes it possible to rely on selection on observables. A strong result is that military training has a positive effect on annual earnings at the age of 30 for the group in the private category that subsequently do not obtain an high educational level.Earnings; Conscription; Enlistment test; Military training

Municipal preferences for state imposed amalgamations: An empirical study based on the 1952 municipal reform in Sweden

This paper concerns municipal preferences for state imposed municipal amalgamations. The main purpose of the paper is to study what factors that can explain municipal acceptance or objection of a state imposed amalgamation decision. The empirical analysis is based on the extensive municipal reform in Sweden in 1952. As much as 66 percent of the newly formed municipalities had at least one municipality that objected to the new organisation. The results indicate that the size of the municipality is of importance; small and large municipalities are most likely to accept the amalgamation decision. Furthermore, the relative municipal size affects the probability of accepting the amalgamation decision and equally sized municipalities are less likely to amalgamate on a voluntary basis. We also find that interjurisdictional co-operation prior to the reform has a positive effect on the municipal decision to accept the new municipal structure.Local government structure; municipal amalgamations; heterogeneous preferences

EXAMINE THE ROLE OF MOTIVATION IN UTAUT MODEL ON THE USE OF CLOUD COMPUTING BY SMEs DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

    Get PDF
The 2019 Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting the business sector in Indonesia, especially Small and Medium Enterprise (SMEs) that contribute greatly to the economy which impacted on decrease in revenue due to health protocols. This study aims to examine the role of motivation in the use of cloud computing technology by SMEs during the pandemic by combining it with the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. The research method uses quantitative data to test hypotheses that have been formulated through a survey of 129 SMEs in Medan using cloud computing technology since the pandemic. Questionnaires are distributed online and offline containing 25 indicators of variables arranged using the Likert scale. The data processing in this study used equation models from Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Smart Partial Least Square (SmartPLS) software. The results of this study received a positive response and showed a significant influence on motivation variable. SME actors have the motivation to survive in the sustainability of their business by using cloud computing technology as a necessity. So that the effect on the intention to use (behavior intention) to use cloud computing technology affects the actual use by SMEs
