    Nomenclature for renal replacement therapy and blood purification techniques in critically ill patients: practical applications

    This article reports the conclusions of the second part of a consensus expert conference on the nomenclature of renal replacement therapy (RRT) techniques currently utilized to manage acute kidney injury and other organ dysfunction syndromes in critically ill patients. A multidisciplinary approach was taken to achieve harmonization of definitions, components, techniques, and operations of the extracorporeal therapies. The article describes the RRT techniques in detail with the relevant technology, procedures, and phases of treatment and key aspects of volume management/fluid balance in critically ill patients. In addition, the article describes recent developments in other extracorporeal therapies, including therapeutic plasma exchange, multiple organ support therapy, liver support, lung support, and blood purification in sepsis. This is a consensus report on nomenclature harmonization in extracorporeal blood purification therapies, such as hemofiltration, plasma exchange, multiple organ support therapies, and blood purification in sepsis

    Estimation of Pap-test coverage in an area with an organised screening program: challenges for survey methods

    BACKGROUND: The cytological screening programme of Viterbo has completed the second round of invitations to the entire target population (age 25–64). From a public health perspective, it is important to know the Pap-test coverage rate and the use of opportunistic screening. The most commonly used study design is the survey, but the validity of self-reports and the assumptions made about non respondents are often questioned. METHODS: From the target population, 940 women were sampled, and responded to a telephone interview about Pap-test utilisation. The answers were compared with the screening program registry; comparing the dates of Pap-tests reported by both sources. Sensitivity analyses were performed for coverage over a 36-month period, according to various assumptions regarding non respondents. RESULTS: The response rate was 68%. The coverage over 36 months was 86.4% if we assume that non respondents had the same coverage as respondents, 66% if we assume they were not covered at all, and 74.6% if we adjust for screening compliance in the non respondents. The sensitivity and specificity of the question, "have you ever had a Pap test with the screening programme" were 84.5% and 82.2% respectively. The test dates reported in the interview tended to be more recent than those reported in the registry, but 68% were within 12 months of each other. CONCLUSION: Surveys are useful tools to understand the effectiveness of a screening programme and women's self-report was sufficiently reliable in our setting, but the coverage estimates were strongly influenced by the assumptions we made regarding non respondents

    Measurement of the W+W- production cross section in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV using dilepton events

    We present a measurement of the W+W- production cross section using 184 pb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Using the dilepton decay channel W+W-→ l(+)ν l(-)(ν) over bar, where the charged leptons can be either electrons or muons, we find 17 candidate events compared to an expected background of 5.0(-0.8)(+2.2) events. The resulting W+W- production cross-section measurement of σ(p (p) over bar → W+W-)=14.6(-5.1)(+5.8)(stat)(-3.0)(+1.8)(syst)± 0.9(lum) pb agrees well with the standard model expectation

    Controversies in acute kidney injury: conclusions from a Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) conference

    In 2012, Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) published a guideline on the classification and management of acute kidney injury (AKI). The guideline was derived from evidence available through February 2011. Since then, new evidence has emerged that has important implications for clinical practice in diagnosing and managing AKI. In April of 2019, KDIGO held a controversies conference entitled Acute Kidney Injury with the following goals: determine best practices and areas of uncertainty in treating AKI; review key relevant literature published since the 2012 KDIGO AKI guideline; address ongoing controversial issues; identify new topics or issues to be revisited for the next iteration of the KDIGO AKI guideline; and outline research needed to improve AKI management. Here, we present the findings of this conference and describe key areas that future guidelines may address

    Limonium sinuatum (L) Mill (“flor de pa­pel”, “estátice”) se cultiva como flor para corte en invernaderos de la provincia de Buenos Aires. De manera reiterada, desde hace algu­nos años las plantaciones sufren los efectos de una enfermedad que compromete las ho­jas y las varas florales, reduciendo notable­mente el área fotosintética y la calidad de las mismas. En ataques severos las flores resul­tan no comerciables y puede llegar a produ­cirse la muerte de las plantas. La infección comienza en las hojas más viejas, que se encuentran en contacto con el suelo, y luego avanza hacia las hojas centra­les y la panícula floral. Se comprobó que el rastrojo que queda en el terreno constituye una im portante fuente de infección y que, al repetir el cultivo se producen ataques más severos. En estos casos las hojas centrales de la roseta, que retienen la humedad, se atizonan antes de la formación de las flores.Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias y Forestale

    The crystal and molecular structure of the title compound has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space groupP2₁/n witha=10.072(2),b=19.434(7),c=19.462(3) Å,β=101.07(1)° andZ=4. The anion has a geometry similar to that observed in other related complexes. The two water molecules are hydrogen bonded to each other and are located at van der Waals distances from nitrogen atoms of neighbor nitroprusside anions.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta
