Psychophysiology of respiratory disease : clinical considerations for the advanced practice nurse
The purpose of this article is to describe the
psychophysiology of dyspnea in chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD), identify the unique impact of respiratory
disease on the female patient, and discuss the relationship of
anxiety and depression in disease manifestation. Current COPD
assessment and treatment guidelines published by the United
States Department of Health and Human Services, the World
Health Organization as well as the National Institute for Health
and Care Experience (NICE) will be presented along with implications
for the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN). Practitioners
treat COPD patients with advanced physiological complications
along with psychological comorbidities that worsen the disease
perception and progression. Therefore, a recommendation will
be made to integrate assessment and evaluation of psychological
comorbidities in COPD patients, with particular consideration
given to the female patient. Utilizing a holistic, int egrated
treatment plan will serve to enhance patient care, alleviate
disease burden and impact overall quality of life in the patient

Classification of Singular Fibres on Rational Elliptic Surfaces in Characteristic Three
We determine and list all possible configurations of singular fibres on
rational elliptic surfaces in characteristic three. In total, we find that 267
distinct configurations exist. This result complements Miranda and Persson's
classification in characteristic zero, and Lang's classification in

Quantifying Laryngopharyngeal Reflux in Singers: Perceptual and Objective Findings
This study examines the relationship between laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) symptoms and oropharyngeal pH levels in singers. We hypothesized that reported symptoms would correlate with objective measures of pH levels from the oropharynx, including the number and total duration of reflux episodes. Twenty professional/semiprofessional singers completed the Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) and underwent oropharyngeal pH monitoring. Mild, moderate, or severe pH exposure was recorded during oropharyngeal pH monitoring. Correlations were performed to examine potential relationships between reflux symptoms and duration of LPR episodes. Symptom severity did not correlate with pH levels; however, we found a number of covariances of interest. Large sample sizes are necessary to determine if true correlations exist. Our results suggest that singers may exhibit enhanced sensitivity to LPR and may therefore manifest symptoms, even in response to subtle changes in pH. This study emphasizes the importance of sensitive and objective measures of reflux severity as well as consideration of the cumulative time of reflux exposure in addition to the number of reflux episodes
Central nervous system mast cells in peripheral inflammatory nociception
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Functional aspects of mast cell-neuronal interactions remain poorly understood. Mast cell activation and degranulation can result in the release of powerful pro-inflammatory mediators such as histamine and cytokines. Cerebral dural mast cells have been proposed to modulate meningeal nociceptor activity and be involved in migraine pathophysiology. Little is known about the functional role of spinal cord dural mast cells. In this study, we examine their potential involvement in nociception and synaptic plasticity in superficial spinal dorsal horn. Changes of lower spinal cord dura mast cells and their contribution to hyperalgesia are examined in animal models of peripheral neurogenic and non-neurogenic inflammation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Spinal application of supernatant from activated cultured mast cells induces significant mechanical hyperalgesia and long-term potentiation (LTP) at spinal synapses of C-fibers. Lumbar, thoracic and thalamic preparations are then examined for mast cell number and degranulation status after intraplantar capsaicin and carrageenan. Intradermal capsaicin induces a significant percent increase of lumbar dural mast cells at 3 hours post-administration. Peripheral carrageenan in female rats significantly increases mast cell density in the lumbar dura, but not in thoracic dura or thalamus. Intrathecal administration of the mast cell stabilizer sodium cromoglycate or the spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) inhibitor BAY-613606 reduce the increased percent degranulation and degranulated cell density of lumbar dural mast cells after capsaicin and carrageenan respectively, without affecting hyperalgesia.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results suggest that lumbar dural mast cells may be sufficient but are not necessary for capsaicin or carrageenan-induced hyperalgesia.</p
A GMBCG Galaxy Cluster Catalog of 55,424 Rich Clusters from SDSS DR7
We present a large catalog of optically selected galaxy clusters from the
application of a new Gaussian Mixture Brightest Cluster Galaxy (GMBCG)
algorithm to SDSS Data Release 7 data. The algorithm detects clusters by
identifying the red sequence plus Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) feature, which
is unique for galaxy clusters and does not exist among field galaxies. Red
sequence clustering in color space is detected using an Error Corrected
Gaussian Mixture Model. We run GMBCG on 8240 square degrees of photometric data
from SDSS DR7 to assemble the largest ever optical galaxy cluster catalog,
consisting of over 55,000 rich clusters across the redshift range from 0.1 < z
< 0.55. We present Monte Carlo tests of completeness and purity and perform
cross-matching with X-ray clusters and with the maxBCG sample at low redshift.
These tests indicate high completeness and purity across the full redshift

Evolution of Traumatic Parenchymal Intracranial Hematomas (ICHs): Comparison of Hematoma and Edema Components
This study seeks to quantitatively assess evolution of traumatic ICHs over the first 24 h and investigate its relationship with functional outcome. Early expansion of traumatic intracranial hematoma (ICH) is common, but previous studies have focused on the high density (blood) component. Hemostatic therapies may increase the risk of peri-hematoma infarction and associated increased cytotoxic edema. Assessing the magnitude and evolution of ICH and edema represented by high and low density components on computerized tomography (CT) may be informative for designing therapies targeted at traumatic ICH. CT scans from participants in the COBRIT (Citicoline Brain Injury Trial) study were analyzed using MIPAV software. CT scans from patients with non-surgical intraparenchymal ICHs at presentation and approximately 24 h later (±12 h) were selected. Regions of high density and low density were quantitatively measured. The relationship between volumes of high and low density were compared to several outcome measures, including Glasgow Outcome Score—Extended (GOSE) and Disability Rating Score (DRS). Paired scans from 84 patients were analyzed. The median time between the first and second scan was 22.79 h (25%ile 20.11 h; 75%ile 27.49 h). Over this time frame, hematoma and edema volumes increased >50% in 34 (40%) and 46 (55%) respectively. The correlation between the two components was low (r = 0.39, p = 0.002). There was a weak correlation between change in edema volume and GOSE at 6 months (r = 0.268, p = 0.037), change in edema volume and DRS at 3 and 6 months (r = −0.248, p = 0.037 and r = 0.358, p = 0.005, respectively), change in edema volume and COWA at 6 months (r = 0.272, p = 0.049), and between final edema volume and COWA at 6 months (r = 0.302, p = 0.028). To conclude, both high density and low density components of traumatic ICHs expand significantly in the first 2 days after TBI. In our study, there does not appear to be a relationship between hematoma volume or hematoma expansion and functional outcome, while there is a weak relationship between edema expansion and functional outcome
Aptamer base: a collaborative knowledge base to describe aptamers and SELEX experiments
Over the past several decades, rapid developments in both molecular and information technology have collectively increased our ability to understand molecular recognition. One emerging area of interest in molecular recognition research includes the isolation of aptamers. Aptamers are single-stranded nucleic acid or amino acid polymers that recognize and bind to targets with high affinity and selectivity. While research has focused on collecting aptamers and their interactions, most of the information regarding experimental methods remains in the unstructured and textual format of peer reviewed publications. To address this, we present the Aptamer Base, a database that provides detailed, structured information about the experimental conditions under which aptamers were selected and their binding affinity quantified. The open collaborative nature of the Aptamer Base provides the community with a unique resource that can be updated and curated in a decentralized manner, thereby accommodating the ever evolving field of aptamer research
Surface Feature-Guided Mapping of Cerebral Metabolic Changes in Cognitively Normal and Mildly Impaired Elderly
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the longitudinal positron emission tomography (PET) metabolic changes in the elderly. Procedures: Nineteen nondemented subjects (mean Mini-Mental Status Examination 29.4±0.7 SD) underwent two detailed neuropsychological evaluations and resting 2-deoxy-2-[F-18]fluoro-D-glucose (FDG)-PET scan (interval 21.7±3.7 months), baseline structural 3T magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and apolipoprotein E4 genotyping. Cortical PET metabolic changes were analyzed in 3-D using the cortical pattern matching technique. Results: Baseline vs. follow-up whole-group comparison revealed significant metabolic decline bilaterally in the posterior temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes and the left lateral frontal cortex. The declining group demonstrated 10–15 % decline in bilateral posterior cingulate/precuneus, posterior temporal, parietal, and occipital cortices. The cognitively stable group showed 2.5–5% similarly distributed decline. ApoE4-positive individuals underwent 5–15 % metabolic decline in the posterior association cortices.
