Aims: This paper explores the parental representations of the child, through the case study of one member of the Lighthouse Project (LP), a mentalization-based intervention for parents of young children aged 1–2 years old, involved with the child welfare system as a result of their child’s maltreatment. Methods: A single mother’s representations of the child are analysed during the programme, through a qualitative lens. Narrative Processes Coding System (NPCS) and Thematic Analysis (TA) are used in combination, to elicit the mother’s representations by identifying language modes and themes from her narratives about both her own and other children. Findings: The maternal representations of the child appeared to be less negative as the programme reached its end. The mother’s reflexive language grew significantly in the middle phase of the programme and regressed during the last phase. However, the combined use of NPCS and TA showed an overall richer and less negative portrayal of the child during the ending phase. Conclusion: These findings suggest that during the course of the programme, the mother’s journey, through her representations of the child, was characterised by progressions and regressions. There was also an emotional richness in the last phase of the programme that indicates the mother’s engagement in the group and her overall positive journey towards the development and the strengthening of a less negative representation of the child. Despite its limitations, this study hopes to provide insights for clinicians establishing and promoting interventions that aim to empower parents to clearly see their children

The purpose of this study is to examine how online reviews from other users in a tourism service website generate emotions and cognitions that contribute to the formation of the image of a tourism service. We used a real website of a rural destination as a tourism service. We tested the proposed conceptual model using structural equation modeling. Our results show a correspondence between consumers’ thoughts and the cognitive dimension of image, as well as between the emotions expressed by subjects and the affective dimension of image. Results confirm that the image of a tourism service is an important predictor of tourism service preferences. This overall image influences consumers' future intentions, not only to buy the service but also to recommend it to other consumers. In summary, we propose and test a model that shows how online reviews significantly influence image formation and subsequent consumer behaviors. To date, little is known about to what extent online reviews are useful to generate cognitive and emotional responses in potential tourists. Consequently, understanding its role in a tourist's decision making process, and assessing the relationships between utility of online reviews, emotions, cognitions and image towards the tourism service will make both scientific and practical contributions. While contributing to the body of knowledge on image formation process, our results are also relevant for public administrations and tourism marketing managers

Background: UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) and WHO estimate that if all babies were breastfed for at least the first six months of their lives, the rate of morbidity and malnutrition would sig-nificantly decrease all over the world. In this view, these two organizations promoted a worldwide campaign for breastfeeding, creating the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) that encourages good practices for the promotion of breastfeeding in hospitals. The aim of our study was to review the available evidence regarding the positive effects of breastfeeding, in order to suggest to most appropriate strategy to support it. Methods: The main databases including Scopus, PubMed, MEDLINE, Google scholar and Science Direct were researched to obtain the original papers related to breastfeeding education. The main terms used to literature search were "Breastfeeding education", Breastfeeding support", and “Breastfeeding healthcare policy”. The timeframe in-cluded the obtained articles was from 1980 to 2015. Results: Our analysis confirms that healthcare providers play a pivotal role in education and encouraging mothers to begin and continue breastfeeding. In this view, the adequate training of healthcare providers seems to be mandatory in order to support this practice. Moreover, adequate facilities are needed in order to promote and support breastfeeding. Conclusion: Considering the available evidence, breastfeeding should be supported among all the mothers. Based on the positive data emerging from the public awareness campaign in different Countries of the world, we strongly en-courage an accurate training for doctors and midwives and the implementation of adequate facilities in order to sup-port breastfeeding

Logistic regression for BLER prediction in 5G

    Get PDF
In this work, a block error rate (BLER) predictor for 5G based on logistic regression is presented. The regression is fed with transmission parameters and channel statistics. With these features, the predictor can model the behaviour of the transmission chain, including the low parity channel code (LDPC). In particular, for each modulation and coding scheme (MCS), the regression model uses as features the mean of the SINR over the allocated resources and the squared distance to the mean. Moreover, a single model able to cope with a set of modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) at the expense of certain accuracy loss is also proposed, and its performance evaluated. Possible applications for the regression models such as end-to-end modelling or as part of the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) function are explored. Results show that the model has excellent accuracy in a wide set of scenarios

Label-free Raman hyperspectral imaging of single cells cultured on polymer substrates

While Raman hyper-spectral imaging has been widely used for label-free mapping of biomolecules in cells, these measurements require the cells to be cultured on weakly Raman scattering substrates. However, many applications in biological sciences and engineering require the cells to be cultured on polymer substrates that often generate large Raman scattering signals. Here, we discuss the theoretical limits of the signal-to-noise ratio in the Raman spectra of cells in the presence of polymer signals and how optical aberrations may affect these measurements. We show that Raman spectra of cells cultured on polymer substrates can be obtained using automatic subtraction of the polymer signals and demonstrate the capabilities of these methods in two important applications: tissue engineering and in-vitro toxicology screening of drugs. Apart from their scientific and technological importance, these applications are examples of the two most common measurement configurations: 1) cells cultured on an optically thick polymer substrate measured using an immersion/dipping objective; 2) cells cultured on a transparent polymer substrate and measured using an inverted optical microscope. In these examples we show that Raman hyperspectral datasets with sufficient quality can be successfully acquired to map the distribution of common biomolecules in cells, such as nucleic acids, proteins and lipids, as well as detecting the early stages of apoptosis. We also discuss strategies for further improvements that could expand the application of Raman hyperspectral imaging on polymer substrates even further in biomedical sciences and engineering

Simulations show that filamentary structures commonly formed before and during the formation of cores. Aims. The Serpens core is an ideal laboratory for testing the state of the art of simulations of turbulent giant molecular clouds. Methods. We used Herschel observations of the Serpens core to compute temperatureand column density maps of the region. We selected the early stages of are cent simulation of star-formation, before stellar feedback was initiated, with similar total mass and physical size as the Serpens core. We also derived temperature and column density maps from the simulations. The observed distribution of column densities of the filaments was analyzed, first including and then masking the cores. The same analysis was performed on the simulations as well. Results. A radial network of filaments was detected in the Serpens core. The analyzed simulation shows a striking morphological resemblance to the observed structures. The column density distribution of simulated filaments without cores shows only a log-normal distribution, while the observed filaments show a power-law tail. The power-law tail becomes evident in the simulation if the focus is only the column density distribution of the cores. In contrast, the observed cores show a flat distribution. Conclusions. Even though the simulated and observed filaments are subjectively similar-looking, we find that they behave in very different ways. The simulated filaments are turbulence-dominated regions; the observed filaments are instead self-gravitating structures that will probably fragment into cores.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Get PDF
Background and aims The study explored the mediating role of forms of passion in the relationship between motivational regulations in exercise and exercise addiction (EA). Methods A total of 485 university students (368 males and 117 females; Mage = 20.43, SD = 3.21) completed a questionnaire measuring the frequency and intensity of exercise, motivational regulations in exercise, passion for exercise, and EA. Controlling the effects of age, frequency, and intensity of practice, the relationships between the study variables were examined though a path analysis. Results Both self-determined and non-self-determined forms of motivation showed positive association with EA. The forms of motivation with greatest predictive power for EA were introjected and integrated regulations. Both forms of motivation had positive direct and indirect effects through obsessive passion (OP) on EA; however, integrated regulation also showed negative indirect effects through harmonious passion on EA. Conclusions Both forms of passion and, especially, OP, seem to affect how motivational regulations are associated with EA. These findings clarify the association found in previous studies between self-determined forms of motivation and EA
