Within the following pages of this final degree project I will show the experience that I have acquired in the practicum, which was carried out in the company “Construcciones Perez Villora”. During the period of 4 months and a half I have been working mainly in the construction site of St. Paul’s School. That was my principal task. Nevertheless I also helped the managers of the Moll del Llevant, LGTBI BIMSA, Ripollet city council and BSM Civic Agents. In average, I spent 5 hours per day working as an assistant for the construction manager, doing all kind of jobs related to construction that definitely provided me with valuable professional experience as well as helped me in improving and developing personally. This internship in a construction center has complemented my university studies and has allowed me to understand many concepts and skills that are important during the development of construction sites. Thank to this internship I have been able to apply knowledge and concepts which I acquired during my education period, being able therefore to know how to use them in a workplace. The volume and magnitude of the project which I have participated in, have enabled me to develop as a professional in the sector and helped me to learn how to apply theoretical knowledge previously acquired

    Get PDF
This study sought to identify elite coaches’ perception of the importance of technical actions and the consideration of relative participation to measure individual volleyball players’ performance. An instrument was elaborated to gather the opinions of elite coaches on the importance of technical actions reported by the data volley (excluding setting), as well as considering relative participation. Twenty elite coaches with at least three years of experience in national teams or top leagues participated in the study. Variables considered in the study were analysed using descriptive statistics and reliability was measured with Cronbach’s α and McDonald’s Omega coefficients (> .70). The results assessed the importance of scoring actions, which received values of (1 point). All errors (terminal and continuity) were scored with (−1). Non-scoring actions were given values [.00, .80], except for poor attack (−.35), poor serve (−.60), free freeball (−.60) and reception free (−.50). Relative participation was considered according to the percentage of points and/or contacts played by each athlete. We concluded that for the player’s points and/or contacts, priority is given to actions that win points directly or are excellent, followed by those that contribute to building comfortable attacks, while penalising errors

This article focuses on the decrease in temperature provided by vertical gardens since urban development and the low presence of plant cover generate an intensification of urban heat islands. Thus, the use of green facades as a tool for urban heat mitigation because it functions as a natural thermal insulator and acquires greater relevance after having accumulated more radiation. The methodology used in this paper was Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), it is a simple and widely used technique, which compares the temperature between two samples such as brick and vertical garden. Thus, this study aimed to determine the time of day in which the change of temperature is most evident and in which season (dry or wet) the garden might play a more remarkable role. This investigation shows thermal differentials that could indicate whether the vertical garden is a mitigation measure for the urban heat island effect, and in which season it may be more effective.

This paper aims to explore the ethics of theatrical technique, Ï„ΔχΜη, which extends far beyond the purely technical aspects of the notion, referring instead to the essential quality attached to artistic workmanship. The correct usage of this Ï„ΔχΜη has ethical ramifications that involve the identification of two basic models of interpersonal, social, cultural and economic relationships: domination and collaboration. Unlike other artistic disciplines, theatrical Ï„ΔχΜη has proper ethical implications that stem from the fact that, on stage, the actor does not work directly for the spectator, but for his partner.

Advances in seismic monitoring at Deception Island volcano (Antarctica) since the International Polar Year

Deception Island is an active volcano located in the south Shetland Islands, Antarctica. It constitutes a natural laboratory to test geophysical instruments in extreme conditions, since they have to endure not only the Antarctic climate but also the volcanic environment. Deception is one of the most visited places in Antarctica, both by scientists and tourists, which emphasize the importance of volcano monitoring. Seismic monitoring has been going on since 1986 during austral summer surveys. The recorded data include volcano-tectonic earthquakes, long-period events and volcanic tremor, among others. The level of seismicity ranges from quiet periods to seismic crises (e.g. 1992-1993, 1999). Our group has been involved in volcano monitoring at Deception Island since 1994. Based on this experience, in recent years we have made the most of the opportunities of the International Polar Year 2007-2008 to introduce advances in seismic monitoring along four lines: (1) the improvement of the seismic network installed for seismic monitoring during the summer surveys; (2) the development and improvement of seismic arrays for the detection and characterization of seismo-volcanic signals; (3) the design of automated event recognition tools, to simplify the process of data interpretation; and (4) the deployment of permanent seismic stations. These advances help us to obtain more data of better quality, and therefore to improve our interpretation of the seismo-volcanic activity at Deception Island, which is a crucial step in terms of hazards assessment. This work has been partially supported by the projects POL2006-08663, CGL2007-28855, CTM2008-03062, CTM2009-07705, CTM2009-08085 and CTM2010-11740 of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation

Long-Term Changes of Inflammatory Biomarkers in Individuals on Suppressive Three-Drug or Two-Drug Antiretroviral Regimens

Background: Because inflammation is associated with mortality and has been linked to HIV transcription in lymphoid tissues during ART, it is necessary to address the long-term effects of switching 3-drug (3DR) to 2-drug regimens (2DR) on inflammation. Methods: Nested study in the Spanish AIDS Research Network. We selected PWH ART-naive initiating 3DR who achieved viral suppression in the first 48 weeks and either remained on 3DR or switched to 2DR (3TC+bPI; 3TC+DTG; DTG+RPV). We assessed the trajectories on inflammatory markers during ART using multivariate piecewise mixed models. Results: We analyzed 619 plasma samples from 148 patients (3DR, N=90; 2DR, N=58), the median follow-up was 4.6 (IQR 3.2-6.2) years. There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between groups. After adjusting for potential confounders, patients with 3DR experienced a slow decline of IL6, hs-CRP, sCD14, sCD163, and D-dimer over time. In contrast, compared to 3DR, switching to 2DR was associated with increases in IL-6 (p=0.001), hs-CRP (p=0.003), and D-dimer (p=0.001) after year 3 from virologic suppression. 2DR was associated with a higher risk of hs-CRP quartile increase (aOR 3.3, 95%CI 1.1-10) and D-dimer quartile increase (aOR 3.7, 95%CI 1.1-13). The adjusted biomarker trajectories did not reveal a distinct pattern according to the type of 2DR used (bPI vs DTG). Conclusions: In this study in virally suppressed individuals, maintaining 3DR was associated with a more favorable long-term inflammatory profile than switching to 2DR. The potential clinical implications of these findings on the development of non-AIDS events deserve further investigation. The HIV BioBank, integrated in the Spanish AIDS Research Network, is supported by Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Spanish Health Ministry (Grant n° proyectos RD06/0006/0035, RD12/0017/0037 and RD16/0025/0019) as part of the Plan Nacional R + D + I and co-financed by the European Development Regional Fund ‘‘A way to achieve Europe’’ (ERDF). The level of caveolin-1 expression determines response to TGF-ß as a tumor suppressor in hepatocellular carcinoma cells

    Get PDF
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a heterogeneous tumour associated with poor prognostic outcome. Caveolin-1 (CAV1), a membrane protein involved in the formation of caveolae, is frequently overexpressed in HCC. Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ÎČ) is a pleiotropic cytokine having a dual role in hepatocarcinogenesis: inducer of apoptosis at early phases, but pro-tumourigenic once cells acquire mechanisms to overcome its suppressor effects. Apoptosis induced by TGF-ÎČ is mediated by upregulation of the NADPH oxidase NOX4, but counteracted by transactivation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) pathway. Previous data suggested that CAV1 is required for the anti-apoptotic signals triggered by TGF-ÎČ in hepatocytes. Whether this mechanism is relevant in hepatocarcinogenesis has not been explored yet. Here we analysed the TGF-ÎČ response in HCC cell lines that express different levels of CAV1. Accordingly, stable CAV1 knockdown or overexpressing cell lines were generated. We demonstrate that CAV1 is protecting HCC cells from TGF-ÎČ-induced apoptosis, which attenuates its suppressive effect on clonogenic growth and increases its effects on cell migration. Downregulation of CAV1 in HLE cells promotes TGF-ÎČ-mediated induction of the pro-apoptotic BMF, which correlates with upregulation of NOX4, whereas CAV1 overexpression in Huh7 cells shows the opposite effect. CAV1 silenced HLE cells show attenuation in TGF-ÎČ-induced EGFR transactivation and activation of the PI3K/AKT pathway. On the contrary, Huh7 cells, which do not respond to TGF-ÎČ activating the EGFR pathway, acquire the capacity to do so when CAV1 is overexpressed. Analyses in samples from HCC patients revealed that tumour tissues presented higher expression levels of CAV1 compared with surrounding non-tumoural areas. Furthermore, a significant positive correlation among the expression of CAV1 and TGFB1 was observed. We conclude that CAV1 has an essential role in switching the response to TGF-ÎČ from cytostatic to tumourigenic, which could have clinical meaning in patient stratification
