Deposition of general ellipsoidal particles
We present a systematic overview of granular deposits composed of ellipsoidal
particles with different particle shapes and size polydispersities. We study
the density and anisotropy of such deposits as functions of size polydispersity
and two shape parameters that fully describe the shape of a general ellipsoid.
Our results show that, while shape influences significantly the macroscopic
properties of the deposits, polydispersity plays apparently a secondary role.
The density attains a maximum for a particular family of non-symmetrical
ellipsoids, larger than the density observed for prolate or oblate ellipsoids.
As for anisotropy measures, the contact forces show are increasingly preferred
along the vertical direction as the shape of the particles deviates for a
sphere. The deposits are constructed by means of an efficient molecular
dynamics method, where the contact forces are efficiently and accurately
computed. The main results are discussed in the light of applications for
porous media models and sedimentation processes.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
The structure of the 3-separations of 3-connected matroids II
The authors showed in an earlier paper that there is a tree that displays, up to a natural equivalence, all non-trivial 3-separations of a 3-connected matroid. The purpose of this paper is to show that if certain natural conditions are imposed on the tree, then it has a uniqueness property. In particular; suppose that, from every pair of edges that meet at a degree-2 vertex and have their other ends of degree at least three, one edge is contracted. Then the resulting tree is unique
Adventures in Invariant Theory
We provide an introduction to enumerating and constructing invariants of
group representations via character methods. The problem is contextualised via
two case studies arising from our recent work: entanglement measures, for
characterising the structure of state spaces for composite quantum systems; and
Markov invariants, a robust alternative to parameter-estimation intensive

Representing Partitions on Trees
In evolutionary biology, biologists often face the problem of constructing a phylogenetic tree on a set X of species from a multiset Π of partitions corresponding to various attributes of these species. One approach that is used to solve this problem is to try instead to associate a tree (or even a network) to the multiset ΣΠ consisting of all those bipartitions {A,X − A} with A a part of some partition in Π. The rational behind this approach is that a phylogenetic tree with leaf set X can be uniquely represented by the set of bipartitions of X induced by its edges. Motivated by these considerations, given a multiset Σ of bipartitions corresponding to a phylogenetic tree on X, in this paper we introduce and study the set P(Σ) consisting of those multisets of partitions Π of X with ΣΠ = Σ. More specifically, we characterize when P(Σ) is non-empty, and also identify some partitions in P(Σ) that are of maximum and minimum size. We also show that it is NP-complete to decide when P(Σ) is non-empty in case Σ is an arbitrary multiset of bipartitions of X. Ultimately, we hope that by gaining a better understanding of the mapping that takes an arbitrary partition system Π to the multiset ΣΠ, we will obtain new insights into the use of median networks and, more generally, split-networks to visualize sets of partitions
A Note on Encodings of Phylogenetic Networks of Bounded Level
Driven by the need for better models that allow one to shed light into the
question how life's diversity has evolved, phylogenetic networks have now
joined phylogenetic trees in the center of phylogenetics research. Like
phylogenetic trees, such networks canonically induce collections of
phylogenetic trees, clusters, and triplets, respectively. Thus it is not
surprising that many network approaches aim to reconstruct a phylogenetic
network from such collections. Related to the well-studied perfect phylogeny
problem, the following question is of fundamental importance in this context:
When does one of the above collections encode (i.e. uniquely describe) the
network that induces it? In this note, we present a complete answer to this
question for the special case of a level-1 (phylogenetic) network by
characterizing those level-1 networks for which an encoding in terms of one (or
equivalently all) of the above collections exists. Given that this type of
network forms the first layer of the rich hierarchy of level-k networks, k a
non-negative integer, it is natural to wonder whether our arguments could be
extended to members of that hierarchy for higher values for k. By giving
examples, we show that this is not the case

Folding and unfolding phylogenetic trees and networks
Phylogenetic networks are rooted, labelled directed acyclic graphs which are commonly used to represent reticulate evolution. There is a close relationship between phylogenetic networks and multi-labelled trees (MUL-trees). Indeed, any phylogenetic network can be "unfolded" to obtain a MUL-tree and, conversely, a MUL-tree can in certain circumstances be "folded" to obtain a phylogenetic network that exhibits . In this paper, we study properties of the operations and in more detail. In particular, we introduce the class of stable networks, phylogenetic networks for which is isomorphic to , characterise such networks, and show that they are related to the well-known class of tree-sibling networks.We also explore how the concept of displaying a tree in a network can be related to displaying the tree in the MUL-tree . To do this, we develop a phylogenetic analogue of graph fibrations. This allows us to view as the analogue of the universal cover of a digraph, and to establish a close connection between displaying trees in and reconcilingphylogenetic trees with networks
The comparative clinical course of pregnant and non-pregnant women hospitalised with influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 infection
Introduction: The Influenza Clinical Information Network (FLU-CIN) was established to gather detailed clinical and epidemiological information about patients with laboratory confirmed A(H1N1)pdm09 infection in UK hospitals. This report focuses on the clinical course and outcomes of infection in pregnancy.Methods: A standardised data extraction form was used to obtain detailed clinical information from hospital case notes and electronic records, for patients with PCR-confirmed A(H1N1)pdm09 infection admitted to 13 sentinel hospitals in five clinical 'hubs' and a further 62 non-sentinel hospitals, between 11th May 2009 and 31st January 2010.Outcomes were compared for pregnant and non-pregnant women aged 15-44 years, using univariate and multivariable techniques.Results: Of the 395 women aged 15-44 years, 82 (21%) were pregnant; 73 (89%) in the second or third trimester. Pregnant women were significantly less likely to exhibit severe respiratory distress at initial assessment (OR?=?0.49 (95% CI: 0.30-0.82)), require supplemental oxygen on admission (OR?=?0.40 (95% CI: 0.20-0.80)), or have underlying co-morbidities (p-trend <0.001). However, they were equally likely to be admitted to high dependency (Level 2) or intensive care (Level 3) and/or to die, after adjustment for potential confounders (adj. OR?=?0.93 (95% CI: 0.46-1.92). Of 11 pregnant women needing Level 2/3 care, 10 required mechanical ventilation and three died.Conclusions: Since the expected prevalence of pregnancy in the source population was 6%, our data suggest that pregnancy greatly increased the likelihood of hospital admission with A(H1N1)pdm09. Pregnant women were less likely than non-pregnant women to have respiratory distress on admission, but severe outcomes were equally likely in both groups
The relationship between workers' self-reported changes in health and their attitudes towards a workplace intervention: lessons from smoke-free legislation across the UK hospitality industry
Background: The evaluation of smoke-free legislation (SFL) in the UK examined the impacts on exposure to second-hand smoke, workers’ attitudes and changes in respiratory health. Studies that investigate changes in the health of groups of people often use self-reported symptoms. Due to the subjective nature it is of interest to determine whether workers’ attitudes towards the change in their working conditions may be linked to the change in health they report.
Methods: Bar workers were recruited before the introduction of the SFL in Scotland and England with the aim of investigating their changes to health, attitudes and exposure as a result of the SFL. They were asked about their
attitudes towards SFL and the presence of respiratory and sensory symptoms both before SFL and one year later. Here we examine the possibility of a relationship between initial attitudes and changes in reported symptoms,
through the use of regression analyses.
Results: There was no difference in the initial attitudes towards SFL between those working in Scotland and England. Bar workers who were educated to a higher level tended to be more positive towards SFL. Attitude towards SFL was not found to be related to change in reported symptoms for bar workers in England (Respiratory, p = 0.755; Sensory, p = 0.910). In Scotland there was suggestion of a relationship with reporting of respiratory symptoms (p = 0.042), where those who were initially more negative to SFL experienced a greater improvement in self-reported health.
Conclusions: There was no evidence that workers who were more positive towards SFL reported greater improvements in respiratory and sensory symptoms. This may not be the case in all interventions and we recommend examining subjects’ attitudes towards the proposed intervention when evaluating possible health benefits using self-reported methods.

Approximate and exact nodes of fermionic wavefunctions: coordinate transformations and topologies
A study of fermion nodes for spin-polarized states of a few-electron ions and
molecules with one-particle orbitals is presented. We find exact nodes
for some cases of two electron atomic and molecular states and also the first
exact node for the three-electron atomic system in state using
appropriate coordinate maps and wavefunction symmetries. We analyze the cases
of nodes for larger number of electrons in the Hartree-Fock approximation and
for some cases we find transformations for projecting the high-dimensional node
manifolds into 3D space. The node topologies and other properties are studied
using these projections. We also propose a general coordinate transformation as
an extension of Feynman-Cohen backflow coordinates to both simplify the nodal
description and as a new variational freedom for quantum Monte Carlo trial
