    Marketing Channel and Technology Adoption: Chinese Villages in the Local Horticulture Market

    China has been experiencing the substantial changes in agricultural sectors in the past decades. Interaction between diversified channels for marketing agricultural products and modern technology adoption are important for restructuring agriculture and improving productivity, but fewer researches have been done in this field in China. With the village - level data collected a round Beijing, the capital of China, this study attempts to find out the major market channel(s) in rural China and its (their) linkage with technology innovation in the horticulture sector. The study finds that small brokers still dominate horticultural product distribution in rural area because of their cheap labor costs; however, the modern supply chain components such as supermarkets are penetrating the rural area and competing with small brokers. Modern market channels stimulate the adoptions of new technology, whereas technology adoption had few effects on modern market channel selection. In addition, shares of crop such as vegetables and fruits are soaring; surprisingly villages farther away from Beijing experienced faster crop restructuring with higher specialization.     Initial Evaluations of LoC Prediction Algorithms Using the NASA Vertical Motion Simulator

    Flying near the edge of the safe operating envelope is an inherently unsafe proposition. Edge of the envelope here implies that small changes or disturbances in system state or system dynamics can take the system out of the safe envelope in a short time and could result in loss-of-control events. This study evaluated approaches to predicting loss-of-control safety margins as the aircraft gets closer to the edge of the safe operating envelope. The goal of the approach is to provide the pilot aural, visual, and tactile cues focused on maintaining the pilot's control action within predicted loss-of-control boundaries. Our predictive architecture combines quantitative loss-of-control boundaries, an adaptive prediction method to estimate in real-time Markov model parameters and associated stability margins, and a real-time data-based predictive control margins estimation algorithm. The combined architecture is applied to a nonlinear transport class aircraft. Evaluations of various feedback cues using both test and commercial pilots in the NASA Ames Vertical Motion-base Simulator (VMS) were conducted in the summer of 2013.     The energy flux of internal gravity waves in the lower solar atmosphere

    Stably stratified fluids, such as stellar and planetary atmospheres, can support and propagate gravity waves. On Earth these waves, which can transport energy and momentum over large distances and can trigger convection, contribute to the formation of our weather and global climate. Gravity waves also play a pivotal role in planetary sciences and modern stellar physics. They have also been proposed as an agent for the heating of stellar atmospheres and coronae, the exact mechanism behind which is one of the outstanding puzzles in solar and stellar physics. Using a combination of high-quality observations and 3D numerical simulations we have the first unambiguous detection of propagating gravity waves in the Sun's (and hence a stellar) atmosphere. Moreover, we are able to determine the height dependence of their energy flux and find that at the base of the Sun's chromosphere it is around 5 kW m−2. This amount of energy is comparable to the radiative losses of the entire chromosphere and points to internal gravity waves as a key mediator of energy into the solar atmosphere

Evidence suggests that Americans are seeking CAM at a similar or even a higher rate than allopathic medicine, yet there seems to be a division between practitioners of each discipline. Isthis division created by a lack of coordination, such as an inadequately established referral system, or by a general lack of knowledge, or by the attitudes of the practitioners?     Simulation System Optimization for Rotorcraft Research on the Vertical Motion Simulator

    A handling qualities experiment was run on the Vertical Motion Simulator using the GenHel math model configured for a UH60A Blackhawk helicopter. In order to obtain valid handling qualities ratings, the simulation system including the math model were optimized to provide realistic cues. The aircraft math model was adjusted to account for the simulator motion system delays and the motion systems gains and washouts were tuned for the bob-up, precision hover and sidestep tasks. The handling qualities ratings from this experiment showed good correlation to flight ratings

    Functional and Morphological Studies of Mitochondria Exposed to Undecagold Clusters: Biologic Surfaces Labeling with Gold Clusters

    This study reports morphological and functional alterations observed in respiring isolated mitochondria when they are exposed to nonpenetrating, positive electrostatically charged synthetic undecagold clusters. Modification of the undecagold clusters positive charges change or prevent the functional effects and the binding to the outside surface of the mitochondria. The mitochondrial functional alterations are dependent on the oxidative phosphorylation capacity of the isolated organelles. The results of these experiments indicate that artificial undecagold may be useful to explore the molecular mechanisms of biological energy transducers which require electric charges separation, ionic fluxes, and electric surface properties

    Ongoing studies on the bats of Danum Valley Borneo

    Here we provide an update on the batting activities of the James Cook University's biannual undergraduate field trip to Danum Valley Field Centre in Borneo. The 2013 trip focussed on various bat surveying techniques, with an emphasis on the use and effectiveness of the EM3 full-spectrum and Anabat II ZCAM ultrasonic detectors. We captured a total of thirty-three individuals of 12 different species in harp traps and mist nets, three species of which had not been encountered on previous surveys. We collected an additional 16,500 call files and in total, we now have a call library of 43 microbat species (of which 28 can be allocated to individual species) along with high-quality photographs of 20 micro- and megabats. It will be no surprise that Terry Reardon also took dynamic photographs of individuals in flight upon release, and generously donated his flash-setup to the staff of Danum Valley. Future field trips will continue to build the call and photo library as well as collect tissue samples for collaborative studies with scientists in Malaysia and Australia. We plan to make the calls and photos available via an open-access WWW page

    Diversification and agrarian change under environmental constraints in rural China: Evidence from a poor township of Beijing municipality

    Working paper du GATE 2007-11This article illustrates the impact of changes related to market reforms and environmental policies on the economic structure in rural China by providing a comparative analysis of several villages in a poor township in Beijing municipality. Two main concomitant phenomena are affecting agricultural and non-agricultural choices in the studied area. First, the introduction of market mechanisms is encouraging local population to engage in new activities that are closer to local comparative advantages. Second, rural households are facing new constraints in the form of environmental protection measures, which have weakened traditional insurance channels provided by forest resources and cattle stock. Drawing on household-level survey data and interviews with village heads conducted in ten villages of Labagoumen township in December 2003, this article analyzes households decisions in response to market reforms and environmental constraints. We find large disparities both between villages and households in the diversification process and discuss the reasons of observed inertia in the region, most households still heavily relying on corn production
