    Classifying closed 2-orbifolds with Euler characteristics

    We determine the extent to which the collection of Γ\Gamma-Euler-Satake characteristics classify closed 2-orbifolds. In particular, we show that the closed, connected, effective, orientable 2-orbifolds are classified by the collection of Γ\Gamma-Euler-Satake characteristics corresponding to free or free abelian Γ\Gamma and are not classified by those corresponding to any finite collection of finitely generated discrete groups. Similarly, we show that such a classification is not possible for non-orientable 2-orbifolds and any collection of Γ\Gamma, nor for noneffective 2-orbifolds. As a corollary, we generate families of orbifolds with the same Γ\Gamma-Euler-Satake characteristics in arbitrary dimensions for any finite collection of Γ\Gamma; this is used to demonstrate that the Γ\Gamma-Euler-Satake characteristics each constitute new invariants of orbifolds.Comment: 17 page

    Polarization observations yield otherwise unobtainable information about the geometrical structure of unresolved objects. In this talk we review the evidences for non-spherically symmetric structures around Luminous Hot Stars from polarimetry and what we can learn with this technique.     Leu8 and Pro8 oxytocin agonism differs across human, macaque, and marmoset vasopressin 1a receptors

    Oxytocin (OXT) is an important neuromodulator of social behaviors via activation of both oxytocin receptors (OXTR) and vasopressin (AVP) 1a receptors (AVPR1a). Marmosets are neotropical primates with a modified OXT ligand (Pro8-OXT), and this ligand shows significant coevolution with traits including social monogamy and litter size. Pro8-OXT produces more potent and efficacious responses at primate OXTR and stronger behavioral effects than the consensus mammalian OXT ligand (Leu8-OXT). Here, we tested whether OXT/AVP ligands show differential levels of crosstalk at primate AVPR1a. We measured binding affinities and Ca2+ signaling responses of AVP, Pro8-OXT and Leu8-OXT at human, macaque, and marmoset AVPR1a. We found that AVP binds with higher affinity than OXT across AVPR1a, and marmoset AVPR1a show a 10-fold lower OXT binding affinity compared to human and macaque AVPR1a. Both Leu8-OXT and Pro8-OXT produce a less efficacious response than AVP at human AVPR1a and higher efficacious response than AVP at marmoset AVPR1a. These data suggest that OXT might partially antagonize endogenous human AVPR1a signaling and enhance marmoset AVPR1a signaling. These findings aid in further understanding inconsistencies observed following systemic intranasal administration of OXT and provide important insights into taxon-specific differences in nonapeptide ligand/receptor coevolution and behavior

    Urinary Steroid Profiling for the Preoperative Identification of Adrenocortical Adenomas with Regression and Myelolipomatous Changes

    Background: Adrenocortical neoplasms are classically divided into adenomas (ACA) and carcinomas (ACC). Heterogeneous appearance and greater size are criteria to suggest malignancy, along with the urinary steroid profile (USP). The presence of regression and myelolipomatous changes in adenomas (ACA-RML) can contribute to confusion with ACC and its USP remains unknown. Objective: To evaluate the features of ACA-RML in comparison with other adrenocortical neoplasms. Design: We selected consecutive ACA (11), ACA-RML (7) and ACC (13) cases for which USP analysis was performed before surgery and tissue was available for histological evaluation (King's College Hospital, 2005-2012). Cases were classified according to WHO and Armed Forces Institute of Pathology criteria. USPs were obtained by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Total excretion of individual steroids and indices (sums and ratios chosen to reflect steroid metabolic activity) were compared between ACA-RML, ACA, and ACC. Steroids that have proved to be useful markers of ACC were also compared empirically between groups, including tetrahydro-11-deoxycortisol, pregnene3,16,20-triols, 16a- and 21-hydroxypregnenolone and tetrahydro-11-deoxycorticosterone. Results: In comparison with ACA, tumors in ACA-RML were significantly larger (8.5±2.4 vs. 3.5±1.0, P=0.002), presented in older patients and showed relatively higher incidence in males. Mitotic figure counts were significantly lower (0.39±0.04 vs. 0.93±0.11 in ACA, p=0.001) and revealed higher frequency of apoptotic cells (100% vs. 9% in ACA, p= 0.001). The USP of ACA-RML showed no diagnostic features of ACC, along with lower levels of DHA and DHA metabolites. Conclusions: ACA-RML reveals distinctive histological features, and lack of USP markers of malignancy. It is important to recognize ACA-RML because its size and heterogeneous appearance raise the possibility of ACC; in this context, USP is an important tool for a correct preoperative diagnosis.     Modelling the clumping-induced polarimetric variability of hot star winds

    Clumping in the winds of massive stars may significantly reduce empirical mass-loss rates, and which in turn may have a large impact on our understanding of massive star evolution. Here, we investigate wind-clumping through the linear polarization induced by light scattering off the clumps. Through the use of an analytic wind clumping model, we predict the time evolution of the linear polarimetry over a large parameter space. We concentrate on the Luminous Blue Variables, which display the greatest amount of polarimetric variability and for which we recently conducted a spectropolarimetric survey. Our model results indicate that the observed level of polarimetric variability can be reproduced for two regimes of parameter space: one of a small number of massive, optically-thick clumps; and one of a very large number of low-mass clumps. Although a systematic time-resolved monitoring campaign is required to distinguish between the two scenarios, we currently favour the latter, given the short timescale of the observed polarization variability. As the polarization is predicted to scale linearly with mass-loss rate, we anticipate that all hot stars with very large mass-loss rates should display polarimetric variability.     Factors influencing the sound preference in urban open spaces

    In this paper, based on a large scale survey in Europe and China as well as corresponding laboratory studies, the influencing factors on the sound preference evaluation, considering social, demographical, physical, behavioural and psychological facets, have been systematically examined based on statistical analyses for each of the 19 case study sites. Various sound types have been considered, including natural, human, mechanical and instrumental sounds. In terms of social/demographical factors, the results suggest that age and education level are two factors which universally influence the sound preference significantly, although the influence may vary with different types of urban open spaces and sounds. With increasing age or education level, people tend to prefer natural sounds and are more annoyed by mechanical sounds in general. It has also been found that gender, occupation and residence status generally would not influence the sound preference evaluation significantly, although gender has a rather strong influence for certain sound types such as bird sounds, especially at certain case study sites. In terms of physical factors (season, time of day), behavioural factors (frequency of coming to the site, reason for coming to the site), and psychological factors (site preference), generally speaking, their influence on the sound preference evaluation is insignificant, except for limited case study sites and certain sound types. The influence of home sound environment, in terms of sounds heard at home, on the sound preference has been found to be generally insignificant, except for certain sounds. It is noted that there are some correlations between social/demographical factors and the studied physical/behavioural/psychological factors, which should be taken into account when considering the influence of individual factors on sound preference.     Brain-wide functional inter-hemispheric disconnection is a potential biomarker for schizophrenia and distinguishes it from depression

    Schizophrenia is associated with disconnectivity in the brain although it is still unclear whether changes within or between hemispheres are of greatest importance. In this paper, an analysis of 152 schizophrenia patients compared with 122 healthy controls was carried out. Comparisons were also made with 39 depression patients and 37 controls to examine whether brain-wide changes in inter- or intra-hemispheric functional connectivity are most associated with the disorder and can distinguish it from depression. The authors developed new techniques (first and second order symmetry) to investigate brain-wide changes in patients (45 regions per hemisphere) and their association with illness duration and symptom severity. Functional connectivity between the same regions in left- and right-hemispheres (first order symmetry) was significantly reduced as was that between the same pairs of regions in the left- and right-hemispheres (second order symmetry) or using all possible inter-hemispheric connections in schizophrenia patients. By contrast, no significant changes were found for brain-wide intra-hemispheric links. First order symmetry changes correlated significantly with positive and negative symptom severity for functional connections linked via the anterior commissure and negative symptoms for those linked via the corpus callosum. Support vector machine analysis revealed that inter-hemispheric symmetry changes had 73–81% accuracy in discriminating schizophrenia patients and either healthy controls or depressed patients. In conclusion, reduced brain-wide inter-hemispheric functional connectivity occurs in schizophrenia, is associated with symptom severity, and can discriminate schizophrenia patients from depressed ones or healthy controls. Brain-wide changes in inter-hemispheric connections may therefore provide a useful potential biomarker for schizophrenia

    Bipolar Magnetic Semiconductors: A New Class of Spintronics Materials

    Electrical control of spin polarization is very desirable in spintronics, since electric field can be easily applied locally in contrast with magnetic field. Here, we propose a new concept of bipolar magnetic semiconductor (BMS) in which completely spin-polarized currents with reversible spin polarization can be created and controlled simply by applying a gate voltage. This is a result of the unique electronic structure of BMS, where the valence and conduction bands possess opposite spin polarization when approaching the Fermi level. Our band structure and spin-polarized electronic transport calculations on semi-hydrogenated single-walled carbon nanotubes confirm the existence of BMS materials and demonstrate the electrical control of spin-polarization in them.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Nanoscal

    Gas distribution, kinematics and star formation in faint dwarf galaxies

    We compare the gas distribution, kinematics and the current star formation in a sample of 10 very faint (-13.37 < M_B < -9.55) dwarf galaxies. For 5 of these galaxies we present fresh, high sensitivity, GMRT HI 21cm observations. For all our galaxies we construct maps of the HI column density at a constant linear resolution of ~300 pc; this forms an excellent data set to check for the presence of a threshold column density for star formation. We find that while current star formation (as traced by Halpha emission) is confined to regions with relatively large (N_HI > (0.4 -1.7) X 10^{21} atoms cm^{-2}) HI column density, the morphology of the Halpha emission is in general not correlated with that of the high HI column density gas. Thus, while high column density gas may be necessary for star formation, in this sample at least, it is not sufficient to ensure that star formation does in fact occur. We examine the line profiles of the HI emission, but do not find a simple relation between regions with complex line profiles and those with on-going star formation. Finally, we examine the very fine scale (~20-100 pc) distribution of the HI gas, and find that at these scales the emission exhibits a variety of shell like, clumpy and filamentary features. The Halpha emission is sometimes associated with high density HI clumps, sometimes the Halpha emission lies inside a high density shell, and sometimes there is no correspondence between the Halpha emission and the HI clumps. In summary, the interplay between star formation and gas density in these galaxy does not seem to show the simple large scale patterns observed in brighter galaxies (abridged).Comment: 15 pages, 6 tables, 13 figures.
