Machine dependence and reproducibility for coupled climate simulations: the HadGEM3-GC3.1 CMIP Preindustrial simulation

When the same weather or climate simulation is run on different high-performance computing (HPC) platforms, model outputs may not be identical for a given initial condition. While the role of HPC platforms in delivering better climate projections is to some extent discussed in the literature, attention is mainly focused on scalability and performance rather than on the impact of machine-dependent processes on the numerical solution. Here we investigate the behaviour of the Preindustrial (PI) simulation prepared by the UK Met Office for the forthcoming CMIP6 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6) under different computing environments. Discrepancies between the means of key climate variables were analysed at different timescales, from decadal to centennial. We found that for the two simulations to be statistically indistinguishable, a 200-year averaging period must be used for the analysis of the results. Thus, constant-forcing climate simulations using the HadGEM3-GC3.1 model are reproducible on different HPC platforms provided that a sufficiently long duration of simulation is used. In regions where El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnection patterns were detected, we found large sea surface temperature and sea ice concentration differences on centennial timescales. This indicates that a 100-year constant-forcing climate simulation may not be long enough to adequately capture the internal variability of the HadGEM3-GC3.1 model, despite this being the minimum simulation length recommended by CMIP6 protocols for many MIP (Model Intercomparison Project) experiments. On the basis of our findings, we recommend a minimum simulation length of 200 years whenever possible

Uma contribuição para a reflexão sobre a didática na história do ensino superior no Brasil

Mesmo a partir daí, o modelo que se foi impondo é o das escolas superiores isoladas, profissionais, criadas separadamente, e por injunções políticas imediatas e nem sempre preocupadas com as reais necessidades da sociedade. Tais universidades souberam romper o isolamento medieval ao unir o mundo das idéias com o mundo das doutrinas. A sociedade da Era da Informação e da Informatização vivencia uma nova estruturação social e desafia o Ensino Superior e a didática do Magistério Superior. EDUCAÇÃO A DISTÂNCIA NOS CURSOS DE GRADUAÇÃO E PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO EM SANTA CATARINA-BRASIL

Ao longo de sua história a Educação a Distância, no Brasil e no mundo, transformou-se e desenvolveu-se evidenciando que o modelo tradicional de ensino vem cedendo espaço a educação à distância. A educação à distância veio atender a uma necessidade cada vez maior de conhecimento sem restrições de espaço e tempo. Muitos dos problemas que assolam a maioria das empresas começam também a perturbar as instituições educacionais. Uma intensa e dinâmica mudança nas necessidades dos alunos; o crescente aumento da concorrência; são alguns aspectos que espelham, em si, um fato concreto palpitante e indiscutivelmente instalado, de maneira ampla e geral, em praticamente todas as instituições de ensino do terceiro grau. A despeito desta visão, já ultrapassada em nações desenvolvidas, há uma estreita relação entre ensino superior e os negócios das instituições educacionais deste nível de ensino, a começar pelo fato de que uma entidade educacional não sobrevive sem recursos, nem tampouco progride sem a renovação e expansão do seu corpo docente e discente. As tendências apontam que as mudanças seguem em direção a uma adequação dos processos educacionais considerando as inteligências múltiplas humanas e em função dos recursos tecnológicos que viabilizam esta mudança nos processos educacionais clássicos. Por conta do rápido desenvolvimento tecnológico e as decorrentes demandas do mercado de trabalho, tem se observado uma oferta cada vez maior de cursos a distância, utilizando a Internet como a principal mídia de interação. A transmissão de informações – seja ela através de meios impressos, eletrônicos e/ou digitais e principalmente o meio em que essa informação é transmitida (no caso a Internet) –, faz com que surjam novos papéis e novas atitudes tanto para alunos quanto para professores. Desta forma, tem-se como objetivo neste artigo mostrar a expansão do ensino a distância no Brasil, analisando a oferta de cursos de graduação e pós-graduação a distância em Santa Catarina

Graphene Grown on Ge(001) from Atomic Source

Among the many anticipated applications of graphene, some - such as transistors for Si microelectronics - would greatly benefit from the possibility to deposit graphene directly on a semiconductor grown on a Si wafer. We report that Ge(001) layers on Si(001) wafers can be uniformly covered with graphene at temperatures between 800{\deg}C and the melting temperature of Ge. The graphene is closed, with sheet resistivity strongly decreasing with growth temperature, weakly decreasing with the amount of deposited C, and reaching down to 2 kOhm/sq. Activation energy of surface roughness is low (about 0.66 eV) and constant throughout the range of temperatures in which graphene is formed. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the major physical processes affecting the growth are: (1) substitution of Ge in surface dimers by C, (2) interaction between C clusters and Ge monomers, and (3) formation of chemical bonds between graphene edge and Ge(001), and that the processes 1 and 2 are surpassed by CH$_{2}$ surface diffusion when the C atoms are delivered from CH$_{4}$. The results of this study indicate that graphene can be produced directly at the active region of the transistor in a process compatible with the Si technology

This study focuses on the imagery of violence from the film Ma vie en Rose. We seek to understand the meanings of violence that appear there - specifically, the violent imposition of social roles. Ludovic, character in the movie, is ambiguous, he believes he is a boy-girl. With his imagination, he exorcise the powers that be in his own body and embarks on creating other opportunities for its existence dressing like a princess, making up and dancing like his novel&#39;s heroine. Your tastes and attitudes makes him as someone &ldquo;out of place&rdquo; seen by his family, neighborhood and school, therefore, he must change his behavior. The film urges the viewer to think that it is through imagination that we identify and assume different roles and that although our lives are based on devices that produce exemplary behavior patterns conveyed by cinema and television, there are also possibilities of recreating these senses and escape from all control and domain, once the existing modes of sociality are not the only and neither definitive.Este estudo versa sobre o imagin&aacute;rio da viol&ecirc;ncia a partir do filme Minha Vida em Cor de Rosa. Buscamos compreender os sentidos da viol&ecirc;ncia que ali aparecem &mdash; especificamente, a viol&ecirc;ncia da imposi&ccedil;&atilde;o de pap&eacute;is sociais. Ludovic, personagem do filme, &eacute; amb&iacute;guo, acredita ser um menino-menina.
