    Anisotropic Hubble expansion of large scale structures

    We investigate the dynamics of an homogenous distribution of galaxies moving under the cosmological expansion through Euler-Poisson equations system. The solutions are interpreted with the aim of understanding the cosmic velocity fields in the Local Super Cluster, and in particular the presence of a bulk flow.     Does the Isotropy of the CMB Imply a Homogeneous Universe? Some Generalised EGS Theorems

    We demonstrate that the high isotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), combined with the Copernican principle, is not sufficient to prove homogeneity of the universe -- in contrast to previous results on this subject. The crucial additional factor not included in earlier work is the acceleration of the fundamental observers. We find the complete class of irrotational perfect fluid spacetimes admitting an exactly isotropic radiation field for every fundamental observer and show that are FLRW if and only if the acceleration is zero. While inhomogeneous in general, these spacetimes all possess three-dimensional symmetry groups, from which it follows that they also admit a thermodynamic interpretation. In addition to perfect fluids models we also consider multi-component fluids containing non-interacting radiation, dust and a quintessential scalar field or cosmological constant in which the radiation is isotropic for the geodesic (dust) observers. It is shown that the non-acceleration of the fundamental observers forces these spacetimes to be FLRW. While it is plausible that fundamental observers (galaxies) in the real universe follow geodesics, it is strictly necessary to determine this from local observations for the cosmological principle to be more than an assumption.     Transcriptome signatures of wastewater effluent exposure in larval zebrafish vary with seasonal mixture composition in an effluent-dominated stream

    Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent-dominated streams provide critical habitat for aquatic and terrestrial organisms but also continually expose them to complex mixtures of pharmaceuticals that can potentially impair growth, behavior, and reproduction. Currently, few biomarkers are available that relate to pharmaceutical-specific mechanisms of action. In the experiment reported in this paper, zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos at two developmental stages were exposed to water samples from three sampling sites (0.1 km upstream of the outfall, at the effluent outfall, and 0.1 km below the outfall) during base-flow conditions from two months (January and May) of a temperate-region effluent-dominated stream containing a complex mixture of pharmaceuticals and other contaminants of emerging concern. RNA-sequencing identified potential biological impacts and biomarkers of WWTP effluent exposure that extend past traditional markers of endocrine disruption. Transcriptomics revealed changes to a wide range of biological functions and pathways including cardiac, neurological, visual, metabolic, and signaling pathways. These transcriptomic changes varied by developmental stage and displayed sensitivity to variable chemical composition and concentration of effluent, thus indicating a need for stage-specific biomarkers. Some transcripts are known to be associated with genes related to pharmaceuticals that were present in the collected samples. Although traditional biomarkers of endocrine disruption were not enriched in either month, a high estrogenicity signal was detected upstream in May and implicates the presence of unidentified chemical inputs not captured by the targeted chemical analysis. This work reveals associations between bioeffects of exposure, stage of development, and the composition of chemical mixtures in effluent-dominated surface water. The work underscores the importance of measuring effects beyond the endocrine system when assessing the impact of bioactive chemicals in WWTP effluent and identifies a need for non-targeted chemical analysis when bioeffects are not explained by the targeted analysis

    Tolerance of ambiguity and psychological well-being in medical training: A systematic review

It has been proposed that there may be an association between levels of tolerance of ambiguity (ie an ability to tolerate a lack of reliable, credible or adequate information) in clinical work and psychological well-being within this population. The aims of this systematic review were: (i) to assess the nature and extent of the literature available, in order to determine if there is an association, and (ii) to develop a conceptual model proposing possible mechanisms to underpin any association, in order to inform subsequent research. Methods: MEDLINE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and PsycINFO databases were searched for articles published from inception to September 2018. Additional literature was identified by searching the reference lists of included articles, forward searches of included articles, hand searches of key journals and a grey literature search. Of the 671 studies identified, 11 met the inclusion criteria. A qualitative synthesis of included studies was performed. Results: All 11 included studies reported an association between a lower level of tolerance of ambiguity or uncertainty and reduced psychological well-being. Included studies were heterogeneous in terms of population and measurement approach, and were often of low methodological quality. Subsets of items from previously developed scales were often used without sufficient consideration of the impact of new combinations of items on scale validity. Similar scales were also scored inconsistently between studies, making comparison difficult. Conclusions: There appears to be an association between tolerance of ambiguity and psychological well-being. This provides new opportunities to understand and prevent the development of stress, burnout and mental health disorders in medical students and doctors. The conceptual model developed provides a framework for future research, which we hope will prevent wasted research effort through duplication and promote higher methodological quality

    A Comparison of Local SNIa with the IRAS PSCz Gravity Field

    We compare the measured peculiar velocities of 98 local (<150/h Mpc) type Ia supernovae with predictions derived from the PSCz survey. There is excellent agreement between the two datasets with a best fit beta_I (=Omega_m^0.6/b_I) of 0.55+-0.06. Subsets of the supernovae dataset are further analysed and the above result is found to be robust with respect to culls by distance, host-galaxy extinction and to the choice of reference frame in which the analysis is carried out. Alternative methods of determining beta_I including density-density comparisons, dipole measurements and WMAP-based results are also discussed. We conclude that most recent determinations are consistent with a value of beta_I=0.5.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Local Supercluster Dynamics: External Tidal Impact of the PSCz sample traced by Optimized Numerical Least Action Method

    We assess the extent to which the PSCz survey encapsulates the complete or major share of matter inhomogeneities responsible for the external tidal forces affecting the peculiar velocity flow within the Local Supercluster [LS]. We investigate this issue on the basis of mock galaxy catalogs drawn from two large Nbody simulations of cosmic structure formation in two different cosmological scenarios. From these a variety of datasets is selected imitating the observational conditions of either the volume-limited LS mimicking NBG catalog or the deeper magnitude-limited PSCz catalog. The mildly nonlinear dynamics in the mock NBG and PSCz velocities are analyzed by means of an optimized implementation of the Least Action Principle, the Fast Action Method [FAM]. By comparing the modeled and true velocities of the corresponding mock catalogs we assess the extent and nature of the external tidal influence on the LS volume. We find that the dynamics in the inner 30Mpc/h volume is strongly affected by the external forces. Most of the external forces can be traced back to a depth of no more than 100Mpc/h. This is concluded from the fact that the FAM reconstructions of the 100Mpc/h PSCz volume appear to have included most gravitational influences. In addition, we demonstrate that for all considered cosmological models the bulk flow and shear components of the tidal velocity field generated by the external distribution of PSCz galaxies provides sufficient information for representing the full external tidal force field.Comment: 46 pages, 19 figures.     Galaxy and Cluster Biasing from Local Group Dynamics

    Comparing the gravitational acceleration induced on the Local Group of galaxies by different tracers of the underline density field we estimate, within the linear gravitational instability theory and the linear biasing ansatz, their relative bias factors. Using optical SSRS2 galaxies, IRAS (PSCz) galaxies and Abell/ACO clusters, we find b_{O,I} ~ 1.21 +- 0.06 and b_{C,I} ~ 4.3 +- 0.8, in agreement with other recent studies. Finally, there is an excellent one-to-one correspondence of the PSCz and Abell/ACO cluster dipole profiles, once the latter is rescaled by b_{C,I}, out to at least ~150 h^{-1} Mpc.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

Lipid-containing alveolar interstitial fibroblasts (lipofibroblasts) are increasingly recognized as an important component of the epithelial stem cell niche in the rodent lung. Although lipofibroblasts were initially believed merely to assist type 2 alveolar epithelial cells in surfactant production during neonatal life, recent evidence suggests that these cells are indispensable for survival and growth of epithelial stem cells during adulthood. Despite increasing interest in lipofibroblast biology, little is known about their cellular origin or the molecular pathways controlling their formation during embryonic development. Here, we showthat a population of lipid-droplet-containing stromal cells emerges in the developing mouse lung between E15.5 and E16.5. This is accompanied by significant upregulation, in the lung mesenchyme, of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (master switch of lipogenesis), adipose differentiation-related protein (marker of mature lipofibroblasts) and fibroblast growth factor 10 (previously shown to identify a subpopulation of lipofibroblast progenitors). We also demonstrate that although only a subpopulation of total embryonic lipofibroblasts derives from Fgf10+ progenitor cells, in vivo knockdown of Fgfr2b ligand activityand reduction in Fgf10 expression lead to global reduction in the expression levels of lipofibroblast markers at E18.5. Constitutive Fgfr1b knockouts and mutants with conditional partial inactivation of Fgfr2b in the lung mesenchyme reveal the involvement of both receptors in lipofibroblast formation and suggest a possible compensation between the two receptors. We also provide data from human fetal lungs to demonstrate the relevance of our discoveries to humans. Our results reveal an essential role for Fgf10 signaling in the formation of lipofibroblasts during late lung development

    Molecular Detection of Multiple Emerging Pathogens in Sputa from Cystic Fibrosis Patients

    Background: There is strong evidence that culture-based methods detect only a small proportion of bacteria present in the respiratory tracts of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Methodology/Principal Findings: Standard microbiological culture and phenotypic identification of bacteria in sputa from CF patients have been compared to molecular methods by the use of 16S rDNA amplification, cloning and sequencing. Twenty-five sputa from CF patients were cultured that yield 33 isolates (13 species) known to be pathogens during CF. For molecular cloning, 760 clones were sequenced (7.263.9 species/sputum), and 53 different bacterial species were identified including 16 species of anaerobes (30%). Discrepancies between culture and molecular data were numerous and demonstrate that accurate identification remains challenging. New or emerging bacteria not or rarely reported in CF patients were detected including Dolosigranulum pigrum, Dialister pneumosintes, and Inquilinus limosus. Conclusions/Significance: Our results demonstrate the complex microbial community in sputa from CF patients, especially anaerobic bacteria that are probably an underestimated cause of CF lung pathology.
