Bose-Einstein condensate collapse: a comparison between theory and experiment
We solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically for the collapse induced
by a switch from positive to negative scattering lengths. We compare our
results with experiments performed at JILA with Bose-Einstein condensates of
Rb-85, in which the scattering length was controlled using a Feshbach
resonance. Building on previous theoretical work we identify quantitative
differences between the predictions of mean-field theory and the results of the
experiments. Besides the previously reported difference between the predicted
and observed critical atom number for collapse, we also find that the predicted
collapse times systematically exceed those observed experimentally. Quantum
field effects, such as fragmentation, that might account for these
discrepancies are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Parity-violating neutron spin rotation in hydrogen and deuterium
We calculate the (parity-violating) spin rotation angle of a polarized
neutron beam through hydrogen and deuterium targets, using pionless effective
field theory up to next-to-leading order. Our result is part of a program to
obtain the five leading independent low-energy parameters that characterize
hadronic parity-violation from few-body observables in one systematic and
consistent framework. The two spin-rotation angles provide independent
constraints on these parameters. Using naive dimensional analysis to estimate
the typical size of the couplings, we expect the signal for standard target
densities to be 10^-7 to 10^-6 rad/m for both hydrogen and deuterium targets.
We find no indication that the nd observable is enhanced compared to the np
one. All results are properly renormalized. An estimate of the numerical and
systematic uncertainties of our calculations indicates excellent convergence.
An appendix contains the relevant partial-wave projectors of the three-nucleon
system.Comment: 44 pages, 17 figures; minor corrections; to be published in EPJ
Quantum properties of transverse pattern formation in second-harmonic generation
We investigate the spatial quantum noise properties of the one dimensional
transverse pattern formation instability in intra-cavity second-harmonic
generation. The Q representation of a quasi-probability distribution is
implemented in terms of nonlinear stochastic Langevin equations. We study these
equations through extensive numerical simulations and analytically in the
linearized limit. Our study, made below and above the threshold of pattern
formation, is guided by a microscopic scheme of photon interaction underlying
pattern formation in second-harmonic generation. Close to the threshold for
pattern formation, beams with opposite direction of the off-axis critical wave
numbers are shown to be highly correlated. This is observed for the fundamental
field, for the second harmonic field and also for the cross-correlation between
the two fields. Nonlinear correlations involving the homogeneous transverse
wave number, which are not identified in a linearized analysis, are also
described. The intensity differences between opposite points of the far fields
are shown to exhibit sub-Poissonian statistics, revealing the quantum nature of
the correlations. We observe twin beam correlations in both the fundamental and
second-harmonic fields, and also nonclassical correlations between them.Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
CP Violation in Fermion Pair Decays of Neutral Boson Particles
We study CP violation in fermion pair decays of neutral boson particles with
spin 0 or 1. We study a new asymmetry to measure CP violation in decays and discuss the possibility of measuring it
experimentally. For the spin-1 particles case, we study CP violation in the
decays of to octet baryon pairs. We show that these decays can
be used to put stringent constraints on the electric dipole moments of
, and .Comment: 14p, OZ-93/22, UM-93/89, OITS 51
Quantum Experimental Data in Psychology and Economics
We prove a theorem which shows that a collection of experimental data of
probabilistic weights related to decisions with respect to situations and their
disjunction cannot be modeled within a classical probabilistic weight structure
in case the experimental data contain the effect referred to as the
'disjunction effect' in psychology. We identify different experimental
situations in psychology, more specifically in concept theory and in decision
theory, and in economics (namely situations where Savage's Sure-Thing Principle
is violated) where the disjunction effect appears and we point out the common
nature of the effect. We analyze how our theorem constitutes a no-go theorem
for classical probabilistic weight structures for common experimental data when
the disjunction effect is affecting the values of these data. We put forward a
simple geometric criterion that reveals the non classicality of the considered
probabilistic weights and we illustrate our geometrical criterion by means of
experimentally measured membership weights of items with respect to pairs of
concepts and their disjunctions. The violation of the classical probabilistic
weight structure is very analogous to the violation of the well-known Bell
inequalities studied in quantum mechanics. The no-go theorem we prove in the
present article with respect to the collection of experimental data we consider
has a status analogous to the well known no-go theorems for hidden variable
theories in quantum mechanics with respect to experimental data obtained in
quantum laboratories. For this reason our analysis puts forward a strong
argument in favor of the validity of using a quantum formalism for modeling the
considered psychological experimental data as considered in this paper.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Search for Higgs bosons decaying to tautau pairs in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a search for the production of neutral Higgs bosons decaying into
tautau pairs in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The
data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1, were collected by
the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We set upper limits at the
95% C.L. on the product of production cross section and branching ratio for a
scalar resonance decaying into tautau pairs, and we then interpret these limits
as limits on the production of Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric
standard model (MSSM) and as constraints in the MSSM parameter space.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PL
Measurement of the photon-jet production differential cross section in collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96~\TeV
We present measurements of the differential cross section dsigma/dpT_gamma
for the inclusive production of a photon in association with a b-quark jet for
photons with rapidities |y_gamma|< 1.0 and 30<pT_gamma <300 GeV, as well as for
photons with 1.5<|y_gamma|< 2.5 and 30< pT_gamma <200 GeV, where pT_gamma is
the photon transverse momentum. The b-quark jets are required to have pT>15 GeV
and rapidity |y_jet| < 1.5. The results are based on data corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb^-1, recorded with the D0 detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. The measured cross
sections are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations
using different sets of parton distribution functions as well as to predictions
based on the kT-factorization QCD approach, and those from the Sherpa and
Pythia Monte Carlo event generators.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.
Limits on anomalous trilinear gauge boson couplings from WW, WZ and Wgamma production in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present final searches of the anomalous gammaWW and ZWW trilinear gauge
boson couplings from WW and WZ production using lepton plus dijet final states
and a combination with results from Wgamma, WW, and WZ production with leptonic
final states. The analyzed data correspond to up to 8.6/fb of integrated
luminosity collected by the D0 detector in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96
TeV. We set the most stringent limits at a hadron collider to date assuming two
different relations between the anomalous coupling parameters
Delta\kappa_\gamma, lambda, and Delta g_1^Z for a cutoff energy scale Lambda=2
TeV. The combined 68% C.L. limits are -0.057<Delta\kappa_\gamma<0.154,
-0.015<lambda<0.028, and -0.008<Delta g_1^Z<0.054 for the LEP parameterization,
and -0.007<Delta\kappa<0.081 and -0.017<lambda<0.028 for the equal couplings
parameterization. We also present the most stringent limits of the W boson
magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PL
Measurement of three-jet differential cross sections d sigma-3jet / d M-3jet in p anti-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV
We present the first measurement of the inclusive three-jet differential
cross section as a function of the invariant mass of the three jets with the
largest transverse momenta in an event in p anti-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96
TeV. The measurement is made in different rapidity regions and for different
jet transverse momentum requirements and is based on a data set corresponding
to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 fb^{-1} collected with the D0 detector at
the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The results are used to test the three-jet
matrix elements in perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order in
the strong coupling constant. The data allow discrimination between
parametrizations of the parton distribution functions of the proton.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Phys. Lett. B, corrected
