Quantum Simulator for Transport Phenomena in Fluid Flows
Transport phenomena still stand as one of the most challenging problems in
computational physics. By exploiting the analogies between Dirac and lattice
Boltzmann equations, we develop a quantum simulator based on pseudospin-boson
quantum systems, which is suitable for encoding fluid dynamics transport
phenomena within a lattice kinetic formalism. It is shown that both the
streaming and collision processes of lattice Boltzmann dynamics can be
implemented with controlled quantum operations, using a heralded quantum
protocol to encode non-unitary scattering processes. The proposed simulator is
amenable to realization in controlled quantum platforms, such as ion-trap
quantum computers or circuit quantum electrodynamics processors.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Setting up tunneling conditions by means of Bohmian mechanics
Usually tunneling is established after imposing some matching conditions on
the (time-independent) wave function and its first derivative at the boundaries
of a barrier. Here an alternative scheme is proposed to determine tunneling and
estimate transmission probabilities in time-dependent problems, which takes
advantage of the trajectory picture provided by Bohmian mechanics. From this
theory a general functional expression for the transmission probability in
terms of the system initial state can be reached. This expression is used here
to analyze tunneling properties and estimate transmissions in the case of
initial Gaussian wave packets colliding with ramp-like barriers.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure
Control of the geometric phase and pseudo-spin dynamics on coupled Bose-Einstein condensates
We describe the behavior of two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in
time-dependent (TD) trap potentials and TD Rabi (or tunneling) frequency, using
the two-mode approach. Starting from Bloch states, we succeed to get analytical
solutions for the TD Schroedinger equation and present a detailed analysis of
the relative and geometric phases acquired by the wave function of the
condensates, as well as their population imbalance. We also establish a
connection between the geometric phases and constants of motion which
characterize the dynamic of the system. Besides analyzing the affects of
temporality on condensates that differs by hyperfine degrees of freedom
(internal Josephson effect), we also do present a brief discussion of a one
specie condensate in a double-well potential
(external Josephson effect).Comment: 1 tex file and 11 figures in pdf forma

Milk yield and genomewide expression profiling in the mammary gland of beef primiparous cows in response to the dietary management during the pre- and postweaning periods
Accelerated growth programs during prepubertal periods have been promoted to advance the first calving of beef heifers. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate nutrition-induced changes on first lactation milk yield and composition and on gene expression of the mammary gland in Parda de Montaña primiparous cows. Female calves (n = 16) were involved in a 2 × 2 factorial experiment. In the preweaning period (PRE-W; 0–6 mo), female calves were either fed a creep feed supplement (Creep) or fed only their dam’s milk (Control). In the postweaning period (POST-W; 6–15 mo), heifers received either a high-energy diet (91.7 MJ/d) or a moderate-energy diet (79.3 MJ/d). All the heifers were managed together from breeding (15 mo) to the end of their first lactation (32 mo). Animal performance; milk production and quantity during the first lactation; plasma glucose, IGF-I, and leptin concentrations; and RNA samples from the mammary gland at the end of the first lactation of the primiparous cows (32 mo) were analyzed. The BW and ADG of the primiparous cow during its first lactation were not different among treatments; however, creep feeding during PRE-W reduced milk production (P < 0.01), milk CP, crude fat, lactose, nonfat solids, and casein content throughout lactation and increased somatic cell count in the third (P < 0.05) and fourth month of lactation (P < 0.10). The energy level during the POST-W had no effect on milk production and quality. Gene expression in the mammary gland was affected by the diet in the PRE-W and POST-W, with the PRE-W diet having the greatest impact. During the PRE-W, creep feeding resulted in upregulation of genes related to immune response and chemokine activity, suggesting that these animals might be in a compromised immune status. Therefore, this strategy would not be recommendable; meanwhile, increasing the energy level in the diet during the POST-W would be recommendable, because it had no deleterious effects on milk yield and composition
Estimation of the XUV radiation onto close planets and their evaporation
Context: The current distribution of planet mass vs. incident stellar X-ray
flux supports the idea that photoevaporation of the atmosphere may take place
in close-in planets. Integrated effects have to be accounted for. A proper
calculation of the mass loss rate due to photoevaporation requires to estimate
the total irradiation from the whole XUV range. Aims: The purpose of this paper
is to extend the analysis of the photoevaporation in planetary atmospheres from
the accessible X-rays to the mostly unobserved EUV range by using the coronal
models of stars to calculate the EUV contribution to the stellar spectra. The
mass evolution of planets can be traced assuming that thermal losses dominate
the mass loss of their atmospheres. Methods: We determine coronal models for 82
stars with exoplanets that have X-ray observations available. Then a synthetic
spectrum is produced for the whole XUV range (~1-912 {\AA}). The determination
of the EUV stellar flux, calibrated with real EUV data, allows us to calculate
the accumulated effects of the XUV irradiation on the planet atmosphere with
time, as well as the mass evolution for planets with known density. Results: We
calibrate for the first time a relation of the EUV luminosity with stellar age
valid for late-type stars. In a sample of 109 exoplanets, few planets with
masses larger than ~1.5 Mj receive high XUV flux, suggesting that intense
photoevaporation takes place in a short period of time, as previously found in
X-rays. The scenario is also consistent with the observed distribution of
planet masses with density. The accumulated effects of photoevaporation over
time indicate that HD 209458b may have lost 0.2 Mj since an age of 20 Myr.
Conclusions: Coronal radiation produces rapid photoevaporation of the
atmospheres of planets close to young late-type stars. More complex models are
needed to explain fully the observations.Comment: Accepted by A&A. 10 pages, 8 figures, 7 Tables (2 online). Additional

A scenario of planet erosion by coronal radiation
Context: According to theory, high-energy emission from the coronae of cool
stars can severely erode the atmospheres of orbiting planets. No observational
tests of the long term effects of erosion have yet been made. Aims: To analyze
the current distribution of planetary mass with X-ray irradiation of the
atmospheres in order to make an observational assessment of the effects of
erosion by coronal radiation. Methods: We study a large sample of
planet-hosting stars with XMM-Newton, Chandra and ROSAT; make a careful
identification of X-ray counterparts; and fit their spectra to make accurately
measurements of the stellar X-ray flux. Results: The distribution of the
planetary masses with X-ray flux suggests that erosion has taken place: most
surviving massive planets, (M_p sin i >1.5 M_J), have been exposed to lower
accumulated irradiation. Heavy erosion during the initial stages of stellar
evolution is followed by a phase of much weaker erosion. A line dividing these
two phases could be present, showing a strong dependence on planet mass.
Although a larger sample will be required to establish a well-defined erosion
line, the distribution found is very suggestive. Conclusions: The distribution
of planetary mass with X-ray flux is consistent with a scenario in which planet
atmospheres have suffered the effects of erosion by coronal X-ray and EUV
emission. The erosion line is an observational constraint to models of
atmospheric erosion.Comment: A&A 511, L8 (2010). 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 online table (included).

Maximal superintegrability on N-dimensional curved spaces
A unified algebraic construction of the classical Smorodinsky-Winternitz
systems on the ND sphere, Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces through the Lie
groups SO(N+1), ISO(N), and SO(N,1) is presented. Firstly, general expressions
for the Hamiltonian and its integrals of motion are given in a linear ambient
space , and secondly they are expressed in terms of two geodesic
coordinate systems on the ND spaces themselves, with an explicit dependence on
the curvature as a parameter. On the sphere, the potential is interpreted as a
superposition of N+1 oscillators. Furthermore each Lie algebra generator
provides an integral of motion and a set of 2N-1 functionally independent ones
are explicitly given. In this way the maximal superintegrability of the ND
Euclidean Smorodinsky-Winternitz system is shown for any value of the
curvature.Comment: 8 pages, LaTe
