Effects of Running up the Score in Sport

    Get PDF
This synthesis highlights the effects of running up the score in sport. To examine this matter to the fullest extent, there were seven peer-reviewed articles chosen that involved the ethics of running up the score and several arguments for and against the issue. Several topics included in the articles were the anti-blowout thesis, humiliation, sportsmanship and competition. The review of literature provides information, and conclusions that support the idea that running up the score may be ethical or unethical depending on the circumstances of the game

This presentation is about graphs (the vertex-edge kind, not the y = f(x) kind). A graph is a mathematical object that represents objects and some relationship among them; the objects are represented by vertices and the relationships are represented by the edges. Graphs have applications in just about every field imaginable, including artificial intelligence, social network theory, and parallel computing theory. A directed graph is a type of graph used to represent relationships that are one-sided or not symmetric. We discuss a graph labeling scheme on directed graphs introduced by LeRoy Beasley called a (2,3)-cordial labeling. In such a labeling, the vertex set of a directed graph is partitioned into two equally sized subsets by labeling half of vertices 0 and the other half 1; edges of the directed graph receive a label according to their direction and affiliated vertex labels such that the edge set is partitioned into three equally sized subsets in accord with whether their labels are 1, 0, or -1. Although not every directed graph can be labeled in accord with the (2,3)-cordial scheme, we discuss properties that indicate when a directed graph can be so labeled as well as applications of (2,3)-cordial labeling. In particular, we present results on the existence of (2,3)-cordial labelings on oriented hypercubes, trees, and tournaments.https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/fsrs2020/1059/thumbnail.jp

The healing of chronic wounds requires intensive medical intervention at huge healthcare costs. Dressing materials should consider the multifactorial nature of these wounds comprising deleterious proteolytic and oxidative enzymes and high bacterial load. In this work, multifunctional hydrogels for chronic wound application were produced by enzymatic cross- linking of thiolated chitosan and gallic acid. The hydrogels combine several beneficial to wound healing properties, controlling the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities, oxidative stress, and bacterial contamination. In vitro studies revealed above 90% antioxidant activity, and MPO and collagenase inhibition by up to 98 and 23%, respectively. Ex vivo studies with venous leg ulcer exudates confirmed the inhibitory capacity of the dressings against MPO and MMPs. Additionally, the hydrogels reduced the population of the most frequently encountered in nonhealing wounds bacterial strains. The stable at physiological conditions and resistant to lysozyme degradation hydrogels showed high biocompatibility with human skin fibroblastsPeer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Burials are archaeological deposits with enormous social significance to provide insights into the past societies. Funerary deposits reveal a set of cultural practices and conceptions that develop and strengthen identities, collective memories and social relationships. But they are also manipulated to distort or invert social reality as a reflection of different attitudes towards death or for the benefit of certain social groups. This article reflects on the analysis and interpretation of archaeological contexts where human skeletal remains appear, with special consideration of funerary deposits, and using the theoretical-methodological basis provided by funerary taphonomy. This discipline attempts to identify and explain the anthropogenic and natural processes that occurred during the formation of archaeolo- gical contexts with human skeletal remains. Given the complexity of funerary deposits, it is necessary to generate high resolution contextual information as a basis for establishing different interpretative hypotheses. Funeral taphonomy integrates different lines of evidence that contribute significantly to the development of these hypotheses

Effect of the viscosity ratio on the PLA/PA10.10 bioblends morphology and mechanical properties

PLA bio-blends with a predominantly biosourced PA10.10 in the composition range 10-50wt.% were prepared by melt blending in order to overcome the advanced brittleness of PLA. Due to the inherent immiscibility of the blends, 30 wt.% of PA was needed to achieve a brittle-to-ductile transition and a co-continuous morphology was predicted at 58 wt.% of PA. The initial enhancement of the PLA rheological behaviour through the environmentally friendly reactive extrusion process yielded a finer and more homogeneous microstructure and hence enhanced the mechanical properties of the bio-blends at much lower PA contents. The brittle-to-ductile transition could be achieved with only 10 wt.% and co-continuity was observed already at 44 wt.% of PA. Results indicate the significant potential of modifying PLA flow behaviour as a promising green manufacturing method toward expanding PLA-based bio-blends applications.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

PLA/PA bio-blends: induced morphology by extrusion

The effect of processing conditions on the final morphology of Poly(Lactic Acid) (PLA) with bio-based Polyamide 10.10 (PA) 70/30 blends is analyzed in this paper. Two types of PLA were used: Commercial (neat PLA) and a rheologically modified PLA (PLAREx), with higher melt elasticity produced by reactive extrusion. To evaluate the ability of in situ micro-fibrillation (µf) of PA phase during blend compounding by twin-screw extrusion, two processing parameters were varied: (i) Screw speed rotation (rpm); and (ii) take-up velocity, to induce a hot stretching with different Draw Ratios (DR). The potential ability of PA-µf in both bio-blends was evaluated by the viscosity (p) and elasticity (k’) ratios determined from the rheological tests of pristine polymers. When PLAREx was used, the requirements for PA-µf was fulfilled in the shear rate range observed at the extrusion die. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations revealed that, unlike neat PLA, PLAREx promoted PA-µf without hot stretching and the aspect ratio increased as DR increased. For neat PLA-based blends, PA-µf was promoted during the hot stretching stage. DMTA analysis revealed that the use of PLAREx PLAREx resulted in a better mechanical performance in the rubbery region (T > Tg PLA-phase) due to the PA-µf morphology obtained.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Exploring the risks accompanying child-bearing in aboriginal society on Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, 13th–15th cal. CE): death of a pregnant woman during her third trimester

    Get PDF
In the pre-Hispanic necropolis of Juan Primo, northwest Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) a grave was found containing a 20–25 year-old woman with a foetus in her abdominal region, whose age at death was estimated at 33–35 weeks of gestation. The purpose of this study is to discuss the possible cause of death of the woman and foetus. Skeletons of both individuals were well preserved, permitting a good record of the bones found in the burial, which is compatible with a pregnancy at preterm. The age of the foetus and the position of the left upper limb raise the possibility that their death was the result of a difficult birth (dystocia). However, a number of alternative disorders can be put forward to explain this death in the third trimester of pregnancy, such as eclampsia and abruption placentae. In this case, pertinent ethnohistorical and osteoarchaeological information about the ancient canaries allows us to assess some of the stressors that would increase their maternal mortality. The lack of similar evidence in archaeological contexts makes this an important finding, providing a likely case of obstetric problems and their impact on pre-industrial societies

    L. B. Beasley recently defined a digraph labeling called (2,3)-cordial. Digraphs for which a (2,3)-cordial labeling can be applied are called (2,3)-cordial digraphs. Herein, we consider the existence and identification of (2,3)-cordial oriented hypercubes. We demonstrate that for every nonzero dimension, there exists a (2,3)-cordial oriented hypercube. Additionally, we demonstrate that not all oriented hypercubes of nonzero dimension are (2,3)-cordial. Finally, we present preliminary results regarding the identification of (2,3)-cordial oriented hypercubes, particularly for dimension 3.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
