    \u27Research as dialogue\u27 and cross cultural consultations : confronting relations of power

    The \u27rescuing\u27 of Indigenous children (from their communities) through education, and the notions of assimilation associated with that, is an aspect of colonialism that has persisted into the so-called \u27post-colonial\u27 era. Recent national policy statements (eg. MCEETYA, 2000; NBEET, 1995) argue the importance of education/research that keeps the locus of control within the Aboriginal community as a means to further the goal of self determination and improve educational outcomes. In this paper, we report on the initial stage of a small empirical research project, Engaging Aboriginal Students In Education Through Community Empowerment.\u27Research as dialogue\u27 was a guiding principal and a primary aim was to listen actively to all key stake holders in the remote community setting, particularly to Indigenous parents, teachers and service providers, in order to identify currentstrengths and concerns regarding the provision of culturally inclusive schooling; and then, to develop, on the basis of these consultations and in collaboration, community-based education projects that engage non-attending Aboriginal students.In this paper, we critically analyse the difficulties as well as potential strengths of trying to form collaborative partnerships as researchers, across cultural differences and with diverse community groups. For example, what does \u27acknowledging\u27 very different cultural perspectives actually mean to/in this kind of research process? The ways in which relations of power amongst all parties are played out in/through such an approach is also opened up for scrutiny and further discussion.<br /

    ln this paper, we discuss methodological issues that emerged as we worked through a small empirical research project, \u27Engaging Aboriginal students in education through community empowerment\u27. Recent national policy statements (see, for example, MCEETYA 2000,. NBEET 1995) argue the importance of education/research that keeps the locus of control within the Aboriginal community as a means to further the goal of self-determination and improve educational outcomes. In keeping with these recommendations, our project aimed to challenge assimilationist frameworks and sought to \u27empower\u27 members of the local Aboriginal community through participation in the project. \u27Research as dialogue\u27 was a guiding principal and a primary aim was to listen actively to all key stakeholders in the remote community setting, particularly to lndigenous parents, students and teachers, in order to identify current strengths and concerns regarding the provision of culturally inclusive schooling. A proposed second stage of the project is to develop, on the basis of these consultations and in collaboration, community-based education projects that engage non-attending Aboriginal students. Here we discuss the consultative processes undertaken in stage one of the project, and critically analyse the difficulties as well as potential strengths of trying to form collaborative partnerships as researchers across cultural differences and with diverse community groups.<br /

    This paper takes up the theme \u27The school as a centre in the community\u27 in light of a research project conducted in a remote community in South Australia in 2001. This project set out to explore with Aboriginal parents, Aboriginal students, teachers and representatives of the various agencies operating in the area how groups within the community understood the issues of early exiting Aboriginal students.<br /

    A 44K microarray dataset of the changing transcriptome in developing Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Atlantic salmon (<it>Salmo salar </it>L.) is an environmentally and economically important organism and its gene content is reasonably well characterized. From a transcriptional standpoint, it is important to characterize the changes in gene expression over the course of unperturbed early development, from fertilization through to the parr stage.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p><it>S. salar </it>samples were taken at 17 time points from 2 to 89 days post fertilization. Total RNA was extracted and cRNA was synthesized and hybridized to a newly developed 44K oligo salmonid microarray platform. Quantified results were subjected to preliminary data analysis and submitted to NCBI's Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). Data can be found under the GEO accession number GSE25938. <url>http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/query/acc.cgi?acc=GSE25938</url></p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Throughout the entire period of development, several thousand genes were found to be differentially regulated. This work represents the trancriptional characterization of a very large geneset that will be extremely valuable in further examination of the transcriptional changes in Atlantic salmon during the first few months of development. The expression profiles can help to annotate salmon genes in addition to being used as references against any number of experimental variables to which developing salmonids might be subjected.</p

    Molecular phylogeny and diversification history of Prosopis (Fabaceae: Mimosoideae)

    The genus Prosopis is an important member of arid and semiarid environments around the world. To study Prosopis diversification and evolution, a combined approach including molecular phylogeny, molecular dating, and character optimization analysis was applied. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred from five different molecular markers (matK-trnK, trnL-trnF, trnS-psbC, G3pdh, NIA). Taxon sampling involved a total of 30 Prosopis species that represented all Sections and Series and the complete geographical range of the genus. The results suggest that Prosopis is not a natural group. Molecular dating analysis indicates that the divergence between Section Strombocarpa and Section Algarobia plus Section Monilicarpa occurred in the Oligocene, contrasting with a much recent diversification (Late Miocene) within each of these groups. The diversification of the group formed by species of Series Chilenses, Pallidae, and Ruscifoliae is inferred to have started in the Pliocene, showing a high diversification rate. The moment of diversification within the major lineages of American species of Prosopis is coincident with the spreading of arid areas in the Americas, suggesting a climatic control for diversification of the group.     Deficient responses from the lateral geniculate nucleus in humans with amblyopia

    Amblyopia or lazy eye is the most common cause of uniocular blindness in adults. It is caused by a disruption to normal visual development as a consequence of unmatched inputs from the two eyes in early life, arising from a turned eye (strabismus), unequal refractive error (anisometropia) or form deprivation (e.g. cataract). Animal models based on extracellular recordings in anesthetized animals suggest that the earliest site of the anomaly in the primate visual pathway is the primary visual cortex (corresponding to the striate cortex, cytoarchitectonic area 17 and area V1), which is where inputs from the two eyes are first combined in an excitatory fashion, whereas more distal and monocular processing structures such as the retina and lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) are normal. Using high-field functional magnetic resonance imaging in a group of human adults with amblyopia, we demonstrate that functional deficits are first observable at a thalamic level, that of the LGN. Our results suggest the need to re-evaluate the current models of amblyopia that are based on the assumption of a purely cortical dysfunction, as well as the role for the LGN in visual development

    The up-dated species level phylogeny for the carnivores using a supertree approach provides new insights into the evolutionary origin and relationships of carnivores. While the gain in biological knowledge is substantial, the supertree approach is not undisputed. I discuss the principles of supertree methods and the competitor supermatrix approaches. I argue that both methods are important to infer phylogenetic relationships

    Emerging Pharmacotherapy for Relapsed or Refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: Focus on Brentuximab Vedotin

    Hodgkins’ lymphoma (HL) which has relapsed post or is refractory to autologous bone marrow transplant presents an ongoing treatment challenge. Development of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) for the treatment of HL has aimed to replicate the success of mAb therapy in the treatment on Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. The identification of CD30 as a potential target for treatment has led to the development of a new antibody-drug conjugate, brentuximab vedotin (SGN-35), which conjugates monomethyl auristatin E to an anti-CD30 antibody to deliver targeted toxicity to the malignant Reed Sternberg cells of HL. This review describes CD30 as an antibody target, and focuses on the antibody-drug conjugate brentuximab vedotin, including current knowledge of the mechanism of action, preclinical, clinical and pharmacokinetic data available for Brentuximab Vedotin

    Object-Oriented Echo Perception and Cortical Representation in Echolocating Bats

    Echolocating bats can identify three-dimensional objects exclusively through the analysis of acoustic echoes of their ultrasonic emissions. However, objects of the same structure can differ in size, and the auditory system must achieve a size-invariant, normalized object representation for reliable object recognition. This study describes both the behavioral classification and the cortical neural representation of echoes of complex virtual objects that vary in object size. In a phantom-target playback experiment, it is shown that the bat Phyllostomus discolor spontaneously classifies most scaled versions of objects according to trained standards. This psychophysical performance is reflected in the electrophysiological responses of a population of cortical units that showed an object-size invariant response (14/109 units, 13%). These units respond preferentially to echoes from objects in which echo duration (encoding object depth) and echo amplitude (encoding object surface area) co-varies in a meaningful manner. These results indicate that at the level of the bat's auditory cortex, an object-oriented rather than a stimulus-parameter–oriented representation of echoes is achieved

    J0454-0309: Evidence for a strong lensing fossil group falling into a poor galaxy cluster

    We have discovered a strong lensing fossil group (J0454) at z=0.26, projected near the well-studied cluster MS0451-0305. Using multicolour Subaru/Suprime-Cam and CFHT/Megaprime imaging together with Keck spectroscopy we identify member galaxies. A VLT/FORS2 spectrum was taken to determine the redshifts of the brightest elliptical and the lensed arc. Using HST/ACS images we determine the group's weak lensing signal and model the strong lens system. This is the first time that a fossil group is analysed with lensing methods. The X-ray luminosity and temperature are derived from XMM-Newton data. We find two filaments extending over 4 Mpc, and within the virial radius we identify 31 members spectroscopically and 33 via the red sequence with i<22 mag. They segregate into spirals and a dynamically cooler central concentration of ellipticals with a velocity dispersion of 480 km/s. Weak lensing and cluster richness relations yield r200 = 830 kpc and M200 = 0.85 x 10^14 Msun. The brightest group galaxy (BGG) is inconsistent with the dynamic centre of J0454. It strongly lenses a galaxy at z~2.1, and we model the lens with a pseudo-isothermal elliptical mass distribution. A large external shear requires that the BGG must be offset from J0454's dark halo centre by at least 90-130 kpc. The X-ray halo is offset by 24 kpc from the BGG, shows no signs of a cooling flow and is well described by a beta-model. With L = 1.4 x 10^43 erg/s J0454 falls well onto standard X-ray cluster scaling relations, but appears cooler (1.1 keV) than expected (2 keV). We conclude that J0454 consists of two systems, a sparse cluster and an infalling fossil group, the latter seeding the BCG. An alternative explanation is that galaxies in a filament, projected along the line of sight, stream towards the denser fossil group.Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures; Identical to the publication in A+A.
