Ionized and neutral gas in the peculiar star/cluster complex in NGC 6946
The characteristics of ionized and HI gas in the peculiar star/cluster
complex in NGC 6946, obtained with the 6-m telescope (BTA) SAO RAS, the Gemini
North telescope, and the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), are
presented. The complex is unusual as hosting a super star cluster, the most
massive known in an apparently non-interacting giant galaxy. It contains a
number of smaller clusters and is bordered by a sharp C-shaped rim. We found
that the complex is additionally unusual in having peculiar gas kinematics. The
velocity field of the ionized gas reveals a deep oval minimum, ~300 pc in size,
centered 7" east of the supercluster. The Vr of the ionized gas in the dip
center is 100 km/s lower than in its surroundings, and emission lines within
the dip appear to be shock excited. This dip is near the center of an HI hole
and a semi-ring of HII regions. The HI (and less certainly, HII) velocity
fields reveal expansion, with the velocity reaching ~30 km/s at a distance
about 300 pc from the center of expansion, which is near the deep minimum
position. The super star cluster is at the western rim of the minimum. The
sharp western rim of the whole complex is plausibly a manifestation of a
regular dust arc along the complex edge. Different hypotheses about the complex
and the Vr depression origins are discussed, including a HVC/dark mini-halo
impact, a BCD galaxy merging, and a gas outflow due to release of energy from

Studying the accretion geometry of EXO 2030+375 at luminosities close to the propeller regime
The Be X-ray binary EXO 2030+375 was in an extended low luminosity state
during most of 2016. We observed this state with NuSTAR and Swift, supported by
INTEGRAL observations as well as optical spectroscopy with the NOT. We present
a comprehensive spectral and timing analysis of these data here to study the
accretion geometry and investigate a possible onset of the propeller effect.
The H-alpha data show that the circumstellar disk of the Be-star is still
present. We measure equivalent widths similar to values found during more
active phases in the past, indicating that the low-luminosity state is not
simply triggered by a smaller Be disk. The NuSTAR data, taken at a 3-78 keV
luminosity of ~6.8e35 erg/s (for a distance of 7.1 kpc), are well described by
standard accreting pulsar models, such as an absorbed power-law with a
high-energy cutoff. We find that pulsations are still clearly visible at these
luminosities, indicating that accretion is continuing despite the very low mass
transfer rate. In phase-resolved spectroscopy we find a peculiar variation of
the photon index from ~1.5 to ~2.5 over only about 3% of the rotational period.
This variation is similar to that observed with XMM-Newton at much higher
luminosities. It may be connected to the accretion column passing through our
line of sight. With Swift/XRT we observe luminosities as low as 1e34 erg/s
during which the data quality did not allow us to search for pulsations, but
the spectrum is much softer and well described by either a blackbody or soft
power-law continuum. This softer spectrum might be due to the fact that
accretion has been stopped by the propeller effect and we only observe the

Combined Fruit and Vegetable Intake Is Correlated with Improved Inflammatory and Oxidant Status from a Cross-Sectional Study in a Community Setting
Previous studies have examined the relationship between specific nutrient and food intakes with limited markers of either inflammation or oxidant status. The objective of this study was to determine if an increase in combined self-reported fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake in a community setting was associated with improved multiple markers of inflammatory and oxidant status. A community group (N = 1000, age 18–85 years, 61% female) gave two fasted blood samples separated by 12 weeks. Blood inflammatory biomarkers included total leukocytes (WBC), plasma C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and granulocyte colony stimulating factor. Measured oxidant status markers were ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and plasma F2-isoprostanes. The relation of markers across categories of F&V intake was examined. In analyses controlling for other important dietary and lifestyle factors, IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly lower across categories of increasing F&V intakes (p < 0.008). FRAP and ORAC were significantly higher (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.047 respectively) while F2-isoprostanes was significantly lower (p < 0.0001) across F&V categories. In a community study, several markers of both inflammation and oxidant status were associated in a putatively salutary direction by higher intake of combined F&V, supporting current guidelines suggesting increased F&V consumption for the prevention of chronic diseases
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the dwarf galaxy IC 10
Infrared observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope archive are used to
study the dust component of the interstellar medium in the IC~10 irregular
galaxy. Dust distribution in the galaxy is compared to the distributions of
H and [SII] emission, neutral hydrogen and CO clouds, and ionizing
radiation sources. The distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)
in the galaxy is shown to be highly non-uniform with the mass fraction of these
particles in the total dust mass reaching 4%. PAHs tend to avoid bright HII
regions and correlate well with atomic and molecular gas. This pattern suggests
that PAHs form in the dense interstellar gas. We propose that the significant
decrease of the PAH abundance at low metallicity is observed not only globally
(at the level of entire galaxies), but also locally (at least, at the level of
individual HII regions). We compare the distribution of the PAH mass fraction
to the distribution of high-velocity features, that we have detected earlier in
wings of H and SII lines, over the entire available galaxy area. No
conclusive evidence for shock destruction of PAHs in the IC~10 galaxy could be

Study of the HII regions in the spiral galaxy NGC6384
The galaxy NGC6384 has been observed with an IPCS through H alpha and [NII]
narrow-band interference filters for direct imagery with the 2.6 m Byurakan
telescope. We studied main physical parameters of identified 98 HII regions,
their diameter and luminosity functions, as well [NII]/H alpha ratio
distribution. The integrated distribution function of the HII region diameters
can be well fitted by the exponential function. The characteristic diameter has
the value (Do = 217 pc) predicted for a galaxy of its measured absolute
luminosity. The luminosity function of HII regions has double power laws
profile with relatively shallow slope at low luminosities (a = - 0.4), an
abrupt turnover at log L(H alpha) = 38.75, and sharper slope at higher
luminosities (a = - 2.3). Correlation between luminosity and diameter of HII
regions confirms that in general they are constant density, radiation-bound
systems. [NII]/H alpha ratio data for HII regions show that there is a negative
radial gradient of [NII]/H alpha. In the central region of the galaxy, nitrogen
abundance is higher than in the periphery. The properties of the HII regions
population of this AGN galaxy does not differs significantly from the
properties of the HII regions population of the "normal" galaxies. Reexamining
the location of the type Ia SN 1971L in the galaxy, we confirm that it lies on
the spiral arm at about 8.6" far from the closest HII region #53 (F81). Such a
location can be taken as prove that the progenitor of this SN do not belong to
an old, evolved stellar population.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
Comparing different definitions of prediabetes with subsequent risk of diabetes: an individual participant data meta-analysis involving 76 513 individuals and 8208 cases of incident diabetes
Objective: There are currently five widely used definition of prediabetes. We compared the ability of these to predict 5-year conversion to diabetes and investigated whether there were other cut-points identifying risk of progression to diabetes that may be more useful. Research design and methods: We conducted an individual participant meta-analysis using longitudinal data included in the Obesity, Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Collaboration. Cox regression models were used to obtain study-specific HRs for incident diabetes associated with each prediabetes definition. Harrell's C-statistics were used to estimate how well each prediabetes definition discriminated 5-year risk of diabetes. Spline and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analyses were used to identify alternative cut-points. Results: Sixteen studies, with 76 513 participants and 8208 incident diabetes cases, were available. Compared with normoglycemia, current prediabetes definitions were associated with four to eight times higher diabetes risk (HRs (95% CIs): 3.78 (3.11 to 4.60) to 8.36 (4.88 to 14.33)) and all definitions discriminated 5-year diabetes risk with good accuracy (C-statistics 0.79-0.81). Cut-points identified through spline analysis were fasting plasma glucose (FPG) 5.1 mmol/L and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) 5.0% (31 mmol/mol) and cut-points identified through ROC analysis were FPG 5.6 mmol/L, 2-hour postload glucose 7.0 mmol/L and HbA1c 5.6% (38 mmol/mol). Conclusions: In terms of identifying individuals at greatest risk of developing diabetes within 5 years, using prediabetes definitions that have lower values produced non-significant gain. Therefore, deciding which definition to use will ultimately depend on the goal for identifying individuals at risk of diabetes.This work was supported by the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (grant number 1103242). An Overview of the 2014 ALMA Long Baseline Campaign
A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to
make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at
submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to ~15 km. To develop
and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from
September to late November 2014, culminating in end-to-end observations,
calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This
paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an
investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase
errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets
and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long
baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also
compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few
percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly
successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as
19 mas at ~350 GHz. Observing with ALMA on baselines of up to 15 km is now

Fermi detection of delayed GeV emission from the short GRB 081024B
We report on the detailed analysis of the high-energy extended emission from
the short Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 081024B, detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space
Telescope. Historically, this represents the first clear detection of temporal
extended emission from a short GRB. The light curve observed by the Fermi
Gamma-ray Burst Monitor lasts approximately 0.8 seconds whereas the emission in
the Fermi Large Area Telescope lasts for about 3 seconds. Evidence of longer
lasting high-energy emission associated with long bursts has been already
reported by previous experiments. Our observations, together with the earlier
reported study of the bright short GRB 090510, indicate similarities in the
high-energy emission of short and long GRBs and open the path to new

Fermi observations of high-energy gamma-ray emission from GRB 080825C
The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (FGST) has opened a new high-energy
window in the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). Here we present a thorough
analysis of GRB 080825C, which triggered the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor
(GBM), and was the first firm detection of a GRB by the Fermi Large Area
Telescope (LAT). We discuss the LAT event selections, background estimation,
significance calculations, and localization for Fermi GRBs in general and GRB
080825C in particular. We show the results of temporal and time-resolved
spectral analysis of the GBM and LAT data. We also present some theoretical
interpretation of GRB 080825C observations as well as some common features

Phosphate concentration and arbuscular mycorrhizal colonisation influence the growth, yield and expression of twelve PHT1 family phosphate transporters in foxtail millet (Setaria italica)
Phosphorus (P) is an essential element which plays several key roles in all living organisms. Setaria italica (foxtail millet) is a model species for panacoid grasses including several millet species widely grown in arid regions of Asia and Africa, and for the bioenergy crop switchgrass. The growth responses of S. italica to different levels of inorganic phosphate (Pi) and to colonisation with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Funneliformis mosseae (syn. Glomus mosseae) were studied. Phosphate is taken up from the environment by the PHT1 family of plant phosphate transporters, which have been well characterized in several plant species. Bioinformatic analysis identified 12 members of the PHT1 gene family (SiPHT1;1-1;12) in S. italica, and RT and qPCR analysis showed that most of these transporters displayed specific expression patterns with respect to tissue, phosphate status and arbuscular mycorrhizal colonisation. SiPHT1;2 was found to be expressed in all tissues and in all growth conditions tested. In contrast, expression of SiPHT1;4 was induced in roots after 15 days growth in hydroponic medium of low Pi concentration. Expression of SiPHT1;8 and SiPHT1;9 in roots was selectively induced by colonisation with F. mosseae. SiPHT1;3 and SiPHT1;4 were found to be predominantly expressed in leaf and root tissues respectively. Several other transporters were expressed in shoots and leaves during growth in low Pi concentrations. This study will form the basis for the further characterization of these transporters, with the long term goal of improving the phosphate use efficiency of foxtail millet
