    Get PDF
The aim of the present prospective clinical study is to compare the stability of the implant-bone interface by the ISQ quotient and marginal bone loss (MBL) rate during one year of follow-up in four system implants with the same surface and different design. Prospective randomized clinical trial of 21 patients in which four implant systems with the same surface and different design were placed. Patients were treated by the same operator following a similar surgical protocol with submerged technique. The second surgery to perform the prosthesis was performed at 3 months. All patients went to their review at 6 months and a year. A periapical radiograph for crestal bone analysis and an Implant stability quotient by resonance frequency analysis (ISQ) analysis were taken at baseline and the reviews. No statistically significant differences were found in the Implant stability quotient by resonance frequency analysis and Marginal Bone Loss in the four types of implants. The ISQ increased from the moment of insertion of the implant until the revision to the year, showing an increase of the stability implant, being this increasing less between the 6 months and the year. Differences in the design of the four implants tested in this study did not show statistically significant differences in any of the variables studied, so the implant design does not influence implant stability and marginal bone loss in the first year after placement

Artículo de investigaciónIn this work, we show that cold plasma (electrical discharge) acting on the liquidatmosphere interface can change some macroscopic and microscopic parameters of wastewater with dissolved dyes, a process characterized by the study of physical and chemical variables, such as the voltage and current of the electrical discharge, temperature, volume, absorbance, electrical conductivity, pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total organic carbon (TOC). The dye used is Acid Black 194 (AB194) in a water solution (250 mL) with a concentration of 0.1 mM and the addition of FeSO4 at 1.0 mM. The initial values of pH and electrical conductivity were 2.54 and 1.55 S/cm, respectively, at a temperature of 21.5 ºC. Nonthermal plasma was generated with a DC power supply at a potential of 700 V and 133 mA, which was maintained throughout the process, until an exposure time of 45 min. This physicochemical method is environmentally friendly because it does not generate polluting waste.UAEM 4307/2017/CI

Multifunctional albumin-stabilized gold nanoclusters for the reduction of cancer stem cells

Controlled delivery of multiple chemotherapeutics can improve the effectiveness of treatments and reduce side effects and relapses. Here in, we used albumin-stabilized gold nanoclusters modified with doxorubicin and SN38 (AuNCs-DS) as combined therapy for cancer. The chemotherapeutics are conjugated to the nanostructures using linkers that release them when exposed to different internal stimuli (Glutathione and pH). This system has shown potent antitumor activity against breast and pancreatic cancer cells. Our studies indicate that the antineoplastic activity observed may be related to the reinforced DNA damage generated by the combination of the drugs. Moreover, this system presented antineoplastic activity against mammospheres, a culturing model for cancer stem cells, leading to an efficient reduction of the number of oncospheres and their size. In summary, the nanostructures reported here are promising carriers for combination therapy against cancer and particularly to cancer stem cells. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (CTQ2016-78454-C2-2-R, SAF2014-56763-R, and SAF2017-87305-R), Comunidad de Madrid (S2013/MIT-2850), Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer, and IMDEA Nanociencia IMDEA Nanociencia acknowledges support from the ‘Severo Ochoa’ Programme for Centres of Excellence in R&D (MINECO, Grant SEV-2016-0686

Considering the structural loss that occurs after surgical procedures for cystic and tumoral pathology, in periodontitis, as well as the maxillary atrophy that determines the rehabilitation with dental implants, it is imperative to find satisfactory solutions. The opportunity provided by the findings in stem cells is a recent introduction in the field of oral surgery, based on the regenerative potential that these cells possess in order to restore defects at different levels of the oral cavity. The aim of this systematic review is to discover the real applications that stem cells may have in our treatments in the near future. We made a systematic review of the literature on the subject of stem cells to know the publications relating to them in the field of oral surgery since 2000. PRISMA statement was accomplished, as its official flow chart is used. This article draws clinical conclusions from basic research and those conducted in the first clinical cases to apply them in a short period of time to our patients in order to achieve excellence in regenerative therapies. To summarize, stem cells may be a turning point in tissue regeneration, though the major challenge is to overcome the remaining obstacles before they become a realistic therapeutic alternative

Improvement of nutritional quality of greenhouse-grown lettuce by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi is conditioned by the source of phosphorus nutrition

    Get PDF
The improvement of the nutritional quality of lettuce by its association with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) has been recently reported in a previous study. The aim of this research was to evaluate if the fertilization with three P sources differing in water solubility affects the effectiveness of AMF for improving lettuce growth and nutritional quality. The application of either water-soluble P sources (Hewitt's solution and single superphosphate) or the water-insoluble (WI) fraction of a “rhizosphere-controlled fertilizer” did not exert negative effects on the establishment of the mycorrhizal symbiosis. AMF improved lettuce growth and nutritional quality. Nevertheless, the effect was dependent on the source of P and cultivar. Batavia Rubia Munguía (green cultivar) benefited more than Maravilla de Verano (red cultivar) in terms of mineral nutrients, total soluble sugars, and ascorbate contents. The association of lettuce with AMF resulted in greater quantities of anthocyanins in plants fertilized with WI, carotenoids when plants received either Hewitt's solution or WI, and phenolics regardless of the P fertilizer applied

The aim of this study is to evaluate the resection of hyperplastic lesions on the buccal mucosa comparing the 532nm laser (KTP), versus diode 980nm laser, considering pain, scarring, inflammation and drug consumption that occurred postoperatively with each lasers. A prospective study of consecutive series of 20 patients in two groups that presents hyperplastic lesions on the buccal mucosa. The choice of the KTP laser or diode 980nm laser for the surgery was made randomly. The power used was 1.5W in both groups in a continuous wave mode with a 320 ?m optical fiber. Parameters of pain, scarring, inflammation and consumption of drugs were recorded by a Numerical Rating Scale and evaluated postoperatively. These recordings were made the day of the surgery, 24 hours after, 14 and 28 days after. Pain and inflammation was light - moderate. The consumption of paracetamol was somewhat higher in the diode 980nm laser versus the KTP laser after 24 hours, although data was not statistically significant; significant differences were found after 28 days in regards to pain (p = 0.023) and inflammation (p = 0.023), but always in the absence parameter so we find no pain in both lasers. Scarring in the two types of laser showed no differences along the visits, with not detected scar retractable. Although there is a slight histological difference regarding the KTP laser in the oral soft tissues for clinical use, both wavelengths are very suitable for excision of oral fibroma

Active unilateral condylar hyperplasia : assessment of the usefulness of single photon emission computed tomography

    Get PDF
This study aims to evaluate whether the uptake difference by the condyles evaluated using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) examination is useful for predicting the activity of the feature and the advance of this pathology. An observational and prospective study has been carried out on nine patients affected by unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) with complete bone maturation, with a follow-up over 18 months. At the beginning of the study, a test-battery was conducted including dental casts, articular examination, teleradiography and cephalometry, computed tomography and SPECT, creating two groups of patients from a difference in uptake between both condyles greater than 10% over the follow-up period. Evolution of data obtained with the rest of the diagnostic tests were compared to confirm UCH activity predicted by SPECT. The comparison of both groups did not show hardly any significant differences, with little clinical significance. Deviation of the mandibular line, the size of the branches or condyles behaved similarly in both study groups. From the data obtained in our study, we can conclude that the use of the difference in uptake between both condyles by applying the SPECT technique is not a valid approach for predicting clinical activity in cases of UCH
