    L’éducation des adultes chez les 16 à 18 ans : La volonté de réussir l’école… et la vie!

    Comment expliquer l’utilisation quasi automatique des programmes de formation aux adultes par une majorité d’élèves de 16 à 18 ans vus comme étant des élèves handicapés ou en difficulté d’apprentissage ou d’adaptation (EHDAA) au secteur jeunes? Ce passage de l’école des jeunes à celle des adultes est-il lié à des aspirations professionnelles légitimes? Une étude de cas de type microtechnographique (Bogdan et Biklen, 1998) a permis de documenter les raisons qui motivent les jeunes de 16 à 18 ans ayant des difficultés à recourir à l’éducation des adultes. Cette même étude a aussi permis de mieux comprendre l’expérience scolaire de ces jeunes, de même que les fondements derrière leur décision d’arrêter ou de poursuivre leur formation scolaire.How can we explain the almost automatic use of adult education programs by the majority of 16 to 18 year-old students identified as handicapped or with learning or adaptation problems? Is the transition students make from high school to adult education classes linked to legitimate professional goals? A micro-technographic type case study (Bogdan and Biklen, 1998) documented reasons motivating 16 to 18 year-olds who have trouble going on to adult education. This study also provided a better understanding of the scholastic experiences of these students, as well as the reasons behind their decision to abandon or continue their education.¿Cómo explicar la utilización casi automática de los programas de formación para adultos que hace un número importante de alumnos entre 16 y 18 años, identificados como alumnos minusválidos o con dificultades de aprendizaje o de adaptación (EHDAA) en las escuelas públicas? ¿El paso de la escuela hacia la educación para adultos está ligado a aspiraciones profesionales legítimas? Un estudio de caso de tipo microtecnográfico (Bogdan y Biklen, 1998) permitió documentar las razones que motivan a los jóvenes de 16 a 18 años que confrontaban dificultades y que optaron por la educación para adultos. Este mismo estudio también nos ha permitido comprender más cabalmente la experiencia escolar de dichos jóvenes, así como las bases sobre las que se apoya su decisión de cesar o de continuar su escolarización

    Laryngeal narrowing during nasal ventilation does not originate from bronchopulmonary C-fibers

    We previously showed that nasal pressure support ventilation (nPSV) can lead to active inspiratory laryngeal narrowing, which originates from the stimulation of bronchopulmonary receptors. Among the three major types of bronchopulmonary receptors, which are variably stimulated by lung distension, C-fiber endings are remarkable, given that their stimulation can also trigger laryngeal closure. Taking advantage of our lamb model with blocked C-fibers, we aimed to assess whether bronchopulmonary C-fiber endings are involved in the active inspiratory laryngeal narrowing during nPSV. Nine lambs were surgically instrumented to assess states of alertness, electrical activity of a glottal constrictor (EaTA), respiratory movements and arterial blood gases. Forty-eight hours later, two polysomnographic recordings were performed during nPSV 15/4 cmH2O, before and after C-fiber blockade. During nPSV, blockade of C-fibers did not prevent inspiratory EaTA (present for 74±41% of respiratory cycles vs. 64±35%, p=0.9). We conclude that active inspiratory laryngeal narrowing during nPSV does not originate from bronchopulmonary C-fiber endings

    Substitution modelling in life cycle assessment of municipal solid waste management

    Life cycle assessment (LCA) is gaining importance worldwide in guiding waste management policies. The capacity of co-products such as recycled materials and recovered energy to avoid primary production of equivalent products largely determines the environmental performance of waste treatment technologies. Estimating the reductions in resource use, emissions, and impacts enabled by this substitution of primary production is often the most influential and controversial factor in quantifying the overall environmental performance of a waste management strategy. This study aims to critically evaluate the modelling of substitution in LCAs of recovered material from municipal solid waste management systems (MSWMS) by answering two questions. First, to what extent is substitution modelling transparently documented in the literature? Second, are the substitution ratios justified to represent physically realistic replacement of one product by another? To address these questions, we performed a systematic analysis of 51 LCA studies on MSWMS published in the peer-reviewed literature. We found that 22% of the substitution ratios are only implicitly expressed. A significant proportion of substitution ratios is not justified (65%), while for the remaining 35%, justifications do not represent physically realistic substitutions. We call for more rigor and transparency, and we propose guidance for the documentation of substitution ratios, with the aim of reaching more credible and robust analyses. For the justification of a substitution ratio to be considered physically realistic, information should notably be provided concerning loss of quality, the function performed by substitutable materials, and the sector of use

    Extensional faulting on Tinos island, Aegean sea, Greece: How many detachments?

    Zircon and apatite fission track (ZFT and AFT) and (U-Th)/He, 40Ar/39Ar hornblende, and U-Pb zircon ages from the granites of Tinos Island in the Aegean Sea, Greece, suggest, together with published ZFT data, that there are three extensional detachments on Tinos. The Tinos granites crosscut the Tinos detachment. Cooling of the granites was controlled by the Livadi detachment, which occurs structurally above the Tinos detachment. Our U-Pb zircon age is 14.6 ± 0.2 Ma and two 40Ar/39Ar hornblende ages are 14.4 ± 0.4 and 13.7 ± 0.4 Ma. ZFT and AFT ages go from 14.4 ± 1.2 to 12.2 ± 1.0 Ma and 12.8 ± 2.4 to 11.9 ± 2.0 Ma. (U-Th)/He ages are from 10.4 ± 0.2 to 9.9 ± 0.2 Ma (zircon) and 11.9 ± 0.5 to 10.0 ± 0.3 Ma (apatite). All ages decrease northeastward in the direction of hanging wall transport on the Livadi detachment and age-distance relationships yield a slip rate of 2.6 (+3.3 / −1.0) km Ma−1. This rate is smaller than a published slip rate of 6.5 km Ma−1 for the Vari detachment, which is another detachment structurally above the Tinos detachment. Because of the different rates and because published ZFT ages from the footwall of the Vari detachment are ∼10 Ma, we propose that the Vari detachment has to be distinguished from the older Livadi detachment. We discuss various models of how the extensional detachments may have evolved and prefer a scenario in which the Vari detachment cut down into the footwall of the Livadi detachment successively exhuming deeper structural units. The thermochronologic ages demonstrate the importance of quantitative data for constraining localization processes during extensional deformation

    ChemR23 Dampens Lung Inflammation and Enhances Anti-viral Immunity in a Mouse Model of Acute Viral Pneumonia

    Viral diseases of the respiratory tract, which include influenza pandemic, children acute bronchiolitis, and viral pneumonia of the elderly, represent major health problems. Plasmacytoid dendritic cells play an important role in anti-viral immunity, and these cells were recently shown to express ChemR23, the receptor for the chemoattractant protein chemerin, which is expressed by epithelial cells in the lung. Our aim was to determine the role played by the chemerin/ChemR23 system in the physiopathology of viral pneumonia, using the pneumonia virus of mice (PVM) as a model. Wild-type and ChemR23 knock-out mice were infected by PVM and followed for functional and inflammatory parameters. ChemR23−/− mice displayed higher mortality/morbidity, alteration of lung function, delayed viral clearance and increased neutrophilic infiltration. We demonstrated in these mice a lower recruitment of plasmacytoid dendritic cells and a reduction in type I interferon production. The role of plasmacytoid dendritic cells was further addressed by performing depletion and adoptive transfer experiments as well as by the generation of chimeric mice, demonstrating two opposite effects of the chemerin/ChemR23 system. First, the ChemR23-dependent recruitment of plasmacytoid dendritic cells contributes to adaptive immune responses and viral clearance, but also enhances the inflammatory response. Second, increased morbidity/mortality in ChemR23−/− mice is not due to defective plasmacytoid dendritic cells recruitment, but rather to the loss of an anti-inflammatory pathway involving ChemR23 expressed by non-leukocytic cells. The chemerin/ChemR23 system plays important roles in the physiopathology of viral pneumonia, and might therefore be considered as a therapeutic target for anti-viral and anti-inflammatory therapies
