funcional) e estratégias e ferramentas operativas utilizadas;
Lean and quality management integration: improvement program implementation in a service company
Lean Thinking is an important pillar in the success of any program of
continuous improvement process. Its tools are useful means in the
analysis, control and organization of important data for correct
decision making in organizations.
This project had as main objective the design of a program of quality
improvement in Eurico Ferreira, S.A., based on the evaluation of
customer satisfaction and the implementation of 5S. Subsequently,
we have selected which business area of the company to address.
After the selection, there was an initial diagnostic procedure,
identifying the various points of improvement to which some tools of
Lean Thinking have been applied, in particular Value Stream
Mapping and 5S methodology. With the first, we were able to map
the current state of the process in which all stakeholders were
represented as well as the flow of materials and information
throughout the process. The 5S methodology allowed to act on the
wastage, identifying and implementing various process
improvements
The Caramela dwelling – the immateriality of the matter
The authors wish to thank architect Tiago Farinha for the data from the 2008 survey, Sara da Silva Carreira, graduated in Portuguese/English Translation for the text review and Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia for supporting project DB-HERITAGE –Database of building materials with historical and heritage interest (PTDC/EPHPAT/4684/2014).Adobe construction is very common in Portugal. Pinhal Novo parish is estimated to have more than 200 dwellings made of adobe masonry, all built in the early 20th century. Most of them are now in ruins, but some still remain in use. Through the years people have been making some refurbishment to improve their living conditions and comfort. Some interventions contributed to increase the durability of the dwellings. This study intends to present the Caramela’s culture, how it came about in this particular region and its dwellings characteristics addressing the building technology, materials used, built elements and structure composition. It started with the work developed by the Museum of Palmela County and a study performed in 2008 by an architect, it has been updated this current year (2017) and is mainly based on oral sources and in situ survey.authorsversionpublishe
se posiciona como centro urbano, num processo de Construção e Representação de Si.Situated in the south shore of Lisbon’s Metropolitan Area (AML), the town of Pinhal
Novo makes a clear bet in the development and implementation of social and
economical strategies, with the purpose of occupying a leading place, face to the
remaining clienteles of Palmela’s municipality and, also, face to the neighbouring
municipalities.
History, traditions and memories are the symbolic tools used by the territory to demand
a position and to bring out its development as an urban centre.
The “caramelo” appeal, whose origins are deeply related with the origin of the town,
was an expression initially used to describe the rural workers of the Beira Litoral region
who, in previous centuries, had travelled there, searching for work and a way of living.
In the 80’s of the last century, the term suffered a transfiguration process, justifying the
existence of a territorial collective conscience, with public activity and notoriety. This
appeal has become the imaginary zone of the place’s history and territorial identity… an
identity authenticated by the effectiveness of the symbolic apparatus which produces it.
And this symbolic field is the domain of characters concurring for the cultural creation
and revitalization.
This thesis intends to present the way as the territory, from the “caramelo” appeal,
positions itself as an urban centre, in a process of self Construction and Representation

Can affirming ultra suave as the most natural brand in the mass market make it the market leader in Portugal?
Ultra Suave is a hair care brand from the L’Oréal Group, that belongs to the natural segment of the Portuguese hair care market, and that represents 14.2% of the total market share. Ultra Suave is the number two brand in Portugal. Even so, it has been losing market share, mainly due to it not being sufficiently perceived as a natural brand. Ultra Suave is already taking actions that aim to emphasize its brand positioning of being perceived as a natural brand by consumers. As such, this Project addresses whether Ultra Suave can affirm itself as the most natural brand in the mass market in Portugal
Genetic variation among and within Quercus suber L. populations in survival, growth, vigor and plant architecture traits
Cork oak is an important forest tree species in the Western Mediterranean region due to the high economic value
of its renewable cork and its ecological and social services. However, studies regarding the genetic variation
within cork oak populations are scarce, and this gap of knowledge is contributing to the delay of the set-up of a
breeding and conservation strategy for the species. In this study, the genetic variation in fitness (survival, height,
and stem diameter) and plant architecture traits (apical dominance, stem straightness, stem inclination degree,
branchiness), and tree vigor was evaluated among and within cork oak populations in two progeny field trials
established in Portugal. Measurements were carried out in each trial in two different periods: ages 9 and 14 years
at Monte da Fava trial and 8 and 14 years at Herdade da Caniceira trial. A significant genetic variation among
and within cork oak populations was detected for survival, growth, and form traits (stem straightness and
inclination). Growth traits presented high values of heritability estimates at the family mean level (≥0.75), and
genetic gains were obtained when families with superior growth were selected. Additionally, results highlighted
that early selection of families with superior performance could be performed, and it is possible to achieve
improvement in both growth and form traits simultaneously, with implications on the profitability and sustainability
of cork oak standsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Effects of Agricultural Land Use on the Ecohydrology of Small- Medium Mediterranean River Basins: Insights from a Case Study in the South of Portugal
Southern Europe has been experiencing an accelerated intensification of agricultural systems in the last decades with consequent environmental effects. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of agricultural land use in two small-medium river basins in the South of Portugal, regarding: (i) water quality and stream habitat; (ii) fish fauna; and (iii) soil. Sampling included fish captures, water, and soil sample collection. Hydromorphological habitat features were also assessed. Land use was quantified at the basin and local scales. Results showed that the most negative effects were associated with intensive, heavily irrigated, fertilized, and pastured local systems, mostly represented at the basin scale by olive groves, irrigated crops, and pastures. Conversely, local agricultural intensity did not prove to be a threat to the integrity and quality of the soil, seeming to ensure the sustainability of the local uses and their systems. Negative effects were observed on water quality and instream habitat and degradation of riparian vegetation, resulting in fish assemblages’ impoverishment. This study contributes to a comprehensive approach to the effects of agricultural land use, highlighting the need to integrate the results of different natural resources to efficiently support policy and decision makers toward a sustainable agriculture, water management, and land use planning
