The taming of the duel: masculinity, honour and ritual violence in London, 1660–1800

Over the course of the ‘long’ eighteenth century the nature and significance of duels fought in the London area changed dramatically. Pistols replaced swords, seconds took on a new role as mediators, and new conventions reduced the violence. Consequently, injuries and fatalities decreased significantly. The purpose of fighting duels also shifted from the defeat of one's antagonist to a demonstration of courage. Although duels continued to occur, growing opposition meant that the audience of people who supported duelling became increasingly limited and duels took place in places far from public view. At the same time, both the press and the courts provided alternative strategies for defending reputations. These changes cannot be attributed to technological developments, official attempts to prevent duelling, or the embourgeoisement of the duel. Rather, they resulted from a series of interlinked cultural changes, including an increasing intolerance of violence, new internalized understandings of elite honour, and the adoption of ‘polite’ and sentimental norms governing masculine conduct. Ritos genéticos editoriais uma abordagem discursiva da edição de textos

Este artigo aborda discursivamente o tratamento editorial de textos, propondo a noção de ritos genéticos editoriais para designar uma série de processos desencadeados pela leitura profissional do revisor de textos, uma atividade linguageira que define um lugar complexo, de atribuições opacas, condicionado e condicionante na dinâmica interlocutiva que revela. Com base nos fundamentos da análise do discurso de tradição francesa, procuramos avançar no entendimento das manobras de leitura e escrita envolvidas no preparo de um texto autoral destinado à circulação pública.This article offers a discursive approach to the editorial treatment of texts, proposing the notion of editorial genetic rites to designate a series of processes unchained by a sort of professional reading, a language activity that defines a complex place, whose cloudy attributions arise from the dynamics of interlocution. Based on discourse analysis of French tradition, we look for to advance in the understanding of the maneuvers involved on this reading-and-writing activity witch characterizes the preparation of a text to its public circulation

A circulação da energia social inscrita na vitalidade dos textos

Há hoje um farto universo de produções e regulamentações que fazem do livro um foco de atenções inéditas no Brasil. Com isso, também ganham terreno temas a princípio bem diversos, como letramento e marketing cultural, por exemplo. Aqui, com base em desdobramentos teóricos da Análise do Discurso de tradição francesa, examinaremos a relação entre o trabalho dos autores e o de seus interlocutores editoriais, os quais, vistos dessa perspectiva, permitem observar a diversidade de práticas e semioses que constituem o processo de criação dos textos cujo destino é circular publicamente. O que se verifica é que, sendo objetos culturais, os textos a publicar não se bastam como organização estritamente linguística ou, antes, a própria organização linguística não se basta, sua autonomia é relativa, pois está submetida a muitas coerções que são de outra ordem – a do discurso, se entendemos por isso que todo texto lido é uma enunciação efetivada e, assim, está sujeito a um conjunto de restrições semânticas que são indissociáveis de um conjunto de práticas sociais e históricas

MOLECULAR PHYLOGENY AND TAXONOMIC REVISION OF FUNGI IN THE GENUS Thelonectria AND RELATED SPECIES WITH Cylindrocarpon-LIKE ANAMORPHS

The genus Thelonectria and related species with Cylindrocarpon-like anamorphs are a group of perithecial ascomycetes in the family Nectriaceae that occur as saprobes and in few cases as pathogens of hardwood trees, shrubs or other plant substrates. Despite of being a key component of forest ecosystems around the world, species relationships and distribution are largely unknown. The objectives of this study were to: 1) infer species level phylogenetic relationships of the genus Thelonectria and related species with Cylindrocarpon-like anamorphs with uncertain classification, testing monophyly of each one of the groups studied; 2) delimit taxa, establishing taxon circumscriptions and providing brief descriptions; 3) resolve nomenclatural issues by identifying redundantly used names and synonyms; 4) provide identification tools, specifically, diagnostic keys and molecular data that can be used further as molecular barcodes; 4) provide distribution data and to take the first steps into the identification of speciation patterns observed in these fungi. To achieve these goals, herbarium materials, as well as freshly collected material obtained from the field or from fungal repositories were compared using phylogenetic analyses of multiple loci, morphology and geographic distribution. This research resulted in the narrower circumscription of the genus Thelonectria, not to contain one of the most common species in the group, T. jungneri. According to the results of the phylogenetic analyses it was found T. jungneri is a segregating clade that needs to be recognized as a different genus. For the genus Thelonectria, a total of 31 new species were described, and three new genera, closely related to Thelonectria were created to accommodate the diversity of other species with Cylindrocarpon-like anamorphs: Cinnamonectria gen nov. with C. cinnamomea as type taxon, Macronectria gen. nov. with M. jungneri as type taxon, and Tumenectria gen. nov. with T. laetidisca as type taxon. Species in this group of fungi present extensive morphological conservationism, representing a challenge for species identification without the use of molecular techniques, however offering a great opportunity to explore mechanisms of speciation and evolutionary diversification

Mídium e mundos éticos: notas sobre a construção do Observatório da Literatura Digital Brasileira (Medium and ethical worlds: notes on the construction of the Observatório da Literatura Digital Brasileira)

In this article, we articulate what Régis Debray defines as medium to a notion proposed by Maingueneau in his studies of the discursive ethos: ethical worlds. It is a matter of detailing what can be understood by values, beliefs and imaginary, terms as necessary as opaque when they appear to describe the effects of meaning that operate in the so called order of the sensitiveness. The hypothesis is that technical issues are at the heart of this operation and that, if we consider the inscriptions of the speeches in tangible materialities, we can better explain the distribution of the discourses in a given social organization and the institutional functions that authorize it. To this end, the concept of hypergender will be mobilized in order to present a case: the project that creates the Observatório da Literatura Digital Brasileira is the trigger for the reflection on “digital literature”, a rubric under construction.En este artículo, articulamos lo que Régis Debray define como medium a una noción propuesta por Dominique Maingueneau (2008) en sus estudios del ethos discursivo: mundos éticos. Publishing rites : autorship and textualization

As primeiras são características de um texto escrito destinado à publicação ¿ trata-se de material lingüístico que demanda procedimentos técnicos como catalogação, normalizações, relativos ao próprio suporte e a sua circulação. As outras, estreitamente ligadas a estas, são um fenômeno decorrente tanto do desenvolvimento das teorias lingüísticas ao longo do século XX, como das demandas que se configuraram quanto à formação de leitores, às teorias e práticas decorrentes, e à expressiva multiplicação de títulos e autores. Considerando tais práticas em sua dinâmica histórica, esta pesquisa se concentra na atividade editorial que tem contemplado reflexões sobre leitura e escrita, e assim tem orientado o tratamento dos textos que se publicam. Há, nesse mercado editorial, uma função relativamente nova, que inclui diversas etapas de trabalho sobre o texto autoral, as quais são ainda pouco discriminadas e compreendidas.Este estudo focaliza uma dessas etapas, entendendo-a como partícipe do processo autoral (que envolve diferentes agentes e operações), o que parece configurar um caráter coletivo da autoria, que entendemos ser característico das condições atuais da produção editorial. Nesse processo, o autor é chamado a um exercício de alteridade explicitado nos textos, cujas diretrizes dizem respeito às limitações e flexibilidades de cada projeto de publicação ¿ momento especialmente interessante para examinar relações entre práticas discursivas e práticas textuaisAbstract: It is probably possible to speak today of linguistic editorial practices and editorial linguistic practices. The former are a set of characteristics of a written text destined to be published ¿ this includes linguistic material demanding technical procedures such as cataloguing and normalizations, related to the support itself and its circulation. The latter, closely connected with the former, arose out of the development of linguistic theories in the 20th century as well as of the demand that took place regarding the formation of readers, the theories and practices that stemmed from such formation and the substantial multiplication of titles and writers. Considering such practices in their historical dynamics, this research is concentrated on the editorial practice that has contemplated reflections on reading and writing, and has thus oriented the treatment of texts to be published. In this editorial market, there is, to a certain extent, a new role, which includes several stages of work performed on the text that are still not clearly outlined or understood. This study focuses on one of those stages, taking it as a participant of the authoral process, which involves different agents and operations that seem to figure as a collective aspect of authorship. The University-Commune

In this new book we return to the challenge of deepening the task to the point of imagining the university formed by commoner university students. It is a turn, a new place from which to name and reconsider community management and action from a sense of co-responsibility for the commons that we must guarantee so that the common project prevails and achieves long-term self-sustainability.This is what the seven articles in this book are about, which calls into question what it means for the university to be and act according to economic principles and logics (giving, receiving, undertaking), social (distribution of roles and benefits) and policies (agreements, consensus, participation and assignment of responsibilities) of the commune. The institutional dimension is important but the vitality, the sense of belonging and the profound strength of the Salesian university project depend much more on the commons logic. Feeling of the commons is not a possibility among many others. We are convinced that, in order to take on this project, it is necessary to transcend institutional, business logic and state regulations.
